Overview

This document describes a Zanussi Electrolux washing machine, specifically models ZWF 1240 W, ZWF 1440 W, ZWF 1640 W, and ZWF 1640 S. It provides comprehensive instructions for installation, operation, and maintenance, ensuring safe and efficient use of the appliance.

Function Description

The washing machine is designed to effectively clean laundry with low water, energy, and detergent consumption, thanks to its New Jet System. It automatically regulates the amount of water used based on the load and fabric type, making it economical even for small loads. A key feature is the automatic cooling of wash water to 60°C before draining in the 90°C program, which helps prevent creasing by reducing thermal shock to fabrics. The machine also includes a special wool program with a delicate wash system for extreme care of woollens. A balance control device ensures stability during the spin cycle.

The control panel features a program selector dial divided into sections for cotton, synthetics, delicates, handwash, wool, silk, mini-programmes, rinses, drain, spin, and delicate spin. Users can select the desired temperature using a dedicated button, with maximum temperatures ranging from 30°C for silk and mini-programmes to 90°C for white cotton. The spin speed can also be adjusted, with maximum speeds varying by model and fabric type (e.g., up to 1600 rpm for cotton on ZWF 1640 W/S models, 900 rpm for synthetics/wool, and 700 rpm for delicates/silk/mini-programmes). A "Rinse hold" option is available to prevent creasing by not draining the final rinse water.

Several optional functions enhance the washing process:

  • Prewash: For very dirty laundry, available for most programs except wool, handwash, silk, and mini-programmes.
  • Extra Quick: For lightly soiled laundry, reducing washing time. Not available for E-Cottons, 40° AA, and E-Synthetics programs.
  • Super Rinse: Adds extra rinses, recommended for people allergic to detergents or in areas with very soft water. Not available for wool and handwash programs.
  • Easy Iron: Gently washes and spins laundry to minimize creasing, making ironing easier. This option also adjusts the number of rinses and may reduce the spin speed for cotton programs or the washing temperature for synthetic programs.

The machine also features a DELAY START button, allowing users to delay the start of a program by 30, 60, 90 minutes, or by 1-hour increments up to 23 hours. A display shows the program duration, delayed start countdown, and alarm codes in case of issues. Program phase indicator lights illuminate to show the current stage of the wash cycle (Prewash, Wash, Rinse, Spin, End).

Usage Features

To operate the machine, users first load laundry into the drum, ensuring it is not overloaded and items are shaken out. Detergent and fabric softener are measured and poured into the designated compartments in the dispenser drawer. The machine is then switched on by turning the program selector dial to the desired program. The temperature, spin speed, and any desired options (Prewash, Extra Quick, Super Rinse, Easy Iron, Delay Start) are selected. Finally, the START/PAUSE button is pressed to begin the program.

During a cycle, a program can be interrupted by pressing START/PAUSE. To change a program after it has started, the selector dial must be turned to "O" (cancelling) and a new program selected. The door can be opened during a cycle if the machine is paused, not heating, the water level is below the door's edge, and the drum is not turning. If these conditions are not met, the machine must be switched off, and the door will unlock after about 3 minutes.

At the end of a program, the machine stops automatically, and the "End" pilot light illuminates. If "Rinse hold" was selected, the water must be drained manually by selecting either the "Drain" program (no spin) or a "Spin" program. After draining, the machine should be switched off, laundry removed, and the door left ajar to air out the drum.

The manual also provides ecological hints, such as washing normally soiled laundry without prewashing, fully loading the machine for efficiency, pre-treating stains to allow lower wash temperatures, and measuring detergent according to water hardness, soiling, and load size.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the appliance's longevity and performance. Before any maintenance, the machine must be disconnected from the electricity supply.

  • Descaling: Periodically use a water softening powder to prevent lime deposits, especially in hard water areas. This should be done separately from laundry washing.
  • After each wash: Leave the door slightly open to prevent mould and stagnant smells and to preserve the door seal.
  • Maintenance Wash: To prevent residue build-up from low-temperature washes, perform a maintenance wash regularly. This involves running the hottest cotton wash program with an empty drum and a normal measure of powder detergent.
  • External cleaning: Clean the exterior with mild washing-up liquid and water, then dry thoroughly.
  • Cleaning the dispenser drawer: The drawer should be cleaned regularly. Remove it by pressing the catch, flush it under a tap, and remove any accumulated powder. The top part of the additive compartment can be removed for easier cleaning.
  • Cleaning the drawer recess: After removing the drawer, use a small brush to clean the recess, ensuring all washing powder residue is removed. Replace the drawer and run a rinse program with an empty drum.
  • Cleaning the pump: The pump should be inspected if the machine fails to empty or spin, or if it makes unusual noises during draining. This involves disconnecting the appliance, waiting for the water to cool, opening the pump door, draining water via the emergency emptying hose, unscrewing and removing the pump cover, and removing any objects from the impeller. The pump cover must be securely re-tightened.
  • Cleaning the water inlet filter: If water is hard or contains lime, the inlet filter may clog. Turn off the water tap, unscrew the inlet hose, clean the filter with a hard bristle brush, and re-tighten the hose.

The manual also addresses the dangers of freezing, providing instructions on how to drain the machine if it's installed in an area where temperatures might drop below 0°C to prevent damage. It also details emergency emptying procedures if the machine fails to discharge water.
