WARNING!:
THE OVRHT3 SERIES AND OVRHS3U SERIES WARRANTY IS VOIDED if the unit is damaged as a result of improper installation or the installer’s
failure to verify the following conditions prior to installation.
WARNING!:
HAZARDOUS VOLTAGES PRESENT: Improper installation or misapplication may result in serious personal injury or damage to the electrical
system. Read the complete installation instructions before proceeding with installation. Remove all power to the electrical panel before
installing or servicing the SPD.
WARNING!:
IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS: All work must be performed by licensed and qualified personnel. Follow applicable electrical specifications
for the country the unit is being used in.
WARNING!:
Check to ensure that a proper bond is installed between neutral and ground at the transformer upstream from all 3-phase Wye, 3-phase
High-leg, 2-phase, or 1-phase, OVRHT3 series and OVRHS3U series device. If the transformer is not accessible, check the main service
disconnect/panel for the NG bond. Lack of a proper bond will damage OVRHT3 series and OVRHS3U series and void the warranty.
WARNING!:
Do not HIPOT the OVRHT3 series and OVRHS3U series units or the electrical system to which the OVRHT3 series and OVRHS3U series unit is
connected without disconnecting the OVRHT3 series and OVRHS3U series units conductors including phases, neutral and ground.
Warning! lnstallation by person with electrotechnical expertise only.
Warnung! lnstallation nur durch elektrotechnische Fachkraft.
Avertissement! lnstallation uniquement par des personned qualifiées électrotechnique.

Overview

The ABB OVRHT3 series and OVRHS3U series are Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) designed to protect electrical systems from surges. This installation, operation, and maintenance manual provides comprehensive guidelines for their proper setup and ensures years of reliable service.

Function Description:

The OVRHT3 and OVRHS3U series SPDs are designed to be installed in parallel to the electrical distribution system to divert harmful transient overvoltages away from sensitive equipment. They feature LED indicators to show their operational status, providing immediate visual feedback on their protective function. The OVRHS3U series also offers optional remote contacts for alarm monitoring, allowing for integration into facility-wide alarm systems for "fail-safe" Form "C" monitoring. These contacts are rated for 1A at 150Vac or 60Vdc maximum and can be configured for either normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) operation, depending on the desired positive or negative logic.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • SPD Type: The OVRHS3U series includes both Type 1 and Type 2 SPDs, while all OVRHT3 series units are Type 1. Type 1 SPDs can be installed on the line side of the main overcurrent protective device, while Type 2 SPDs are installed on the load side.
  • KAIC Rating: The devices offer varying Short Circuit Current Ratings (KAIC), ranging from 65 kAIC to 200 kAIC, indicating their ability to withstand short-circuit currents without damage.
  • Upstream Breaker Requirements: For some OVRHS3U models (e.g., OVRHS3U402401P, OVRHS3U802402SR, OVRHS3U404803D, OVRHS3U402773Y, OVRHS3U402303Y), an upstream circuit breaker is required, with ratings typically specified as 20A or 30A. Many OVRHS3U models and all OVRHT3 models do not require an upstream breaker for safe operation, although an installer may choose to connect them to a breaker for convenience or additional protection.
  • Wire Gauge: All OVRHS3U series units are furnished with 14 AWG leads, while all OVRHT3 series units come with 12 AWG leads. All units are supplied with 36-inch leads.
  • Enclosure Rating: If installed in a NEMA 4X enclosure, all conduits and fittings must be properly installed to maintain the NEMA 4X rating.
  • Torque Specifications: Maximum torque on remote alarm terminals is 10 in-lbs. Torque specifications for neutral and ground bar connections should follow the panel manufacturer's recommendations.

Usage Features:

  • Installation Flexibility: The devices can be mounted by removing a 13mm (0.5 inches) knockout or by using a provided metal bracket within the equipment enclosure. This flexibility allows for optimal placement to minimize lead length and sharp bends, which are crucial for effective SPD performance.
  • Status Indicators: Green function status LEDs illuminate when the phase, neutral, and grounding wirings are correctly installed and the unit is operational. Extinguished LEDs indicate a fault or the need for replacement.
  • System Compatibility: The OVRHT3B(C)502301PI model is suitable for TN-C and TN-C-S power systems. The OVRHT3B(C)502301PJ model is intended for TNS power systems but can also be used on TN-C-S and U.S. 120/240V (without neutral) services. The OVRHT3B(C)502301PK model is for IT systems, with cautious use on other power systems. The OVRHT3B(C)502301PL model is for TT systems, but can also be used on TNS, TN-C-S, and U.S. (without neutral) services.
  • Wiring Configurations: The manual provides detailed wiring diagrams for various electrical system configurations, including 1-phase 2-wire, 2-phase 3-wire, 3-phase Wye 4-wire, 3-phase Delta 3-wire, 3-phase High-Leg Delta 4-wire, and 1-phase 2-wire (Earthing System). These diagrams ensure correct connection to phase, neutral, and ground conductors.

Maintenance Features:

  • Self-Monitoring: The green function status LEDs provide continuous self-monitoring. If an LED extinguishes, it indicates that the protector needs replacement.
  • No User Serviceable Parts: The units are designed without user-serviceable parts, meaning that if an LED remains out or a breaker cannot be reset, the entire protector must be replaced. This simplifies maintenance by eliminating the need for component-level repairs.
  • Installation Verification: The manual emphasizes critical pre-installation checks, such as verifying the proper bond between neutral and ground at the upstream transformer or main service disconnect/panel. This proactive approach helps prevent damage and ensures the warranty remains valid.
  • Safety Warnings: Numerous warnings highlight the importance of disconnecting all power before installation or servicing, the need for licensed and qualified personnel, and the risks of improper installation, including personal injury or damage to the electrical system. These warnings are crucial for safe and effective maintenance.
  • Warranty Conditions: The warranty is voided if the unit is damaged due to improper installation or failure to verify specified conditions prior to installation. This includes issues like incorrect wiring, splicing SPD conductors within the unit's enclosure, or using conductors that are too long, too small a gauge, or have too many sharp bends. Adherence to installation guidelines is essential for warranty validity.
