Do you have a question about the ABB Tropos 6410-XA and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Tropos 6410-XA and 6420-XA are outdoor mesh routers designed for wireless network backhaul and client connectivity. They are built for robust performance in various outdoor environments.

Function Description:

These routers serve as key components in a mesh network, providing wireless connectivity for both network backhaul and client devices. They support multiple wireless standards and offer flexible power input options. The 6410-XA models operate in the 2.4 GHz band, while the 6420-XA models are dual-band, supporting both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Depending on the specific model, they can feature either two Gigabit Ethernet ports or one Gigabit Ethernet port and one serial port (RS-232 or RS-485) for wired client connections. The LAN port is primarily for network backhaul and supports 802.3at Power over Ethernet (PoE) for power input. The MGT port can be used for configuration, connecting wired Ethernet clients, or serial clients, and also supports 12-48VDC power input. The routers are designed for outdoor installation, with removable, remote-mount antennas to optimize signal range and coverage.

Usage Features:

  • Flexible Mounting: The routers can be mounted on metal poles, wood poles, wood braces, towers, or streetlight arms (1" to 10" diameter). The mounting bracket design allows for secure attachment and leveling.
  • Remote Antenna Capability: Antennas are removable and can be mounted remotely to overcome physical obstructions and optimize radio range. Low-loss LMR-400 cables or similar are recommended, with the shortest possible length to minimize RF signal loss. Both antennas of each radio must be mounted in the same way (either on the router or remotely).
  • GPS (if installed): Models equipped with GPS require an unobstructed view of the sky for optimal satellite signal reception.
  • Power Options: The routers can be powered via 802.3at PoE on the LAN port or 12-48VDC on the MGT port.
  • Outdoor PoE Injector (PS079001): Available for non-photocell applications, providing AC power input and an Ethernet output to the router's MGT port. It can be co-mounted with the router or remotely mounted.
  • External Battery Backup Unit (BB063001): Provides 4 to 6 hours of backup power at 20°C. It requires one of the Tropos power supplies and can be co-mounted with the router or remotely mounted.
  • Serial Client Support: Models with a serial MGT port can support RS-232 or RS-485 serial clients, with various wiring scenarios for single or dual serial clients.
  • Site Planning: Emphasizes the importance of site surveys to determine optimal placement, considering factors like line-of-sight, interference sources (cordless phones, wireless cameras, radars), physical environment (clear vs. cluttered areas), and building materials.

Maintenance Features:

  • Grounding: Requires an external grounding wire if installed on a non-metal pole or if the metal structure is not properly grounded. The outdoor data protection device must also be grounded to a bonded pipe or ground rod. Grounding must be completed before connecting power.
  • Watertight Gland for Cables: Ethernet cables are routed through a watertight gland to ensure environmental protection. Shielded Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 outdoor-rated cables are required, with proper termination and bonding to the unit and protective earth at the building entrance.
  • No User-Serviceable Parts: The router itself contains no user-serviceable parts. All service-related issues must be handled by qualified service personnel.
  • Safety Guidelines: Includes warnings regarding high voltage, falls, dropping tools, and contact with AC power wiring during installation. It also provides RF exposure information, specifying minimum separation distances from the router.
  • Environmental Protection: Designed with an IP67 weather rating, ensuring protection against dust and water ingress, suitable for wet, outdoor locations. Closure caps must be installed, and all cable connections securely fastened and waterproofed.
  • Hazardous Environment Suitability: Suitable for use in Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, and D or non-hazardous locations only. Warnings are provided against disconnecting power or servicing in hazardous areas unless the area is known to be non-hazardous. Antennas for hazardous locations must be installed within the end-use enclosure.
