The AC-FIX electric expander is a specialized tool designed for expanding PEX-A pipes using an expansion ring system. This device facilitates the creation of secure and leak-proof connections in plumbing and heating systems.
Function Description
The primary function of the AC-FIX electric expander is to enlarge the end of PEX-A pipes to allow for the insertion of fittings, which are then secured by an expansion ring. The tool features a self-rotatory expanding head that ensures even and consistent expansion of the pipe.
To achieve a good result, the pipe must be cut clean and perpendicular to its axis. The pipe ends should be dry and free of grease to prevent the plastic ring from slipping during expansion.
There are two main methods for fitting the expansion ring:
- PEX-a ring without stop edge: The plastic ring is fitted onto the pipe so that a very small part of it (maximum 1mm) extends beyond the pipe end. The ring should be firmly fitted. If it fits loosely, the pipe end should be slightly expanded without the plastic ring, then the ring repositioned.
- PEX-a ring with stop edge or EVO-PLUS ring: The ring is placed on the end of the pipe until the pipe reaches the stop edge of the ring.
Before operation, the trigger safety must be unlocked by pressing the button on the side of the tool, which features an open padlock icon.
The expander head, corresponding to the pipe's diameter, is screwed onto the tool. The expander head is then inserted into the pipe, and the trigger is pressed. The expander head will continuously expand and retract as long as the trigger is pressed. Each time the segments retract, the pipe should be repeatedly and gently pushed inward onto the expander head until the pipe and ring are level with the shoulder of the expansion head. It is crucial not to push the expander head too far into the pipe, as this can block the auto-rotation movement. Once expanded, the pipe is removed when the segments retract, and the trigger is released. Any excess grease from inside the pipe should be wiped off.
After expansion, the fitting is fully inserted into the pipe. If the fitting cannot be inserted, it should be removed, and the pipe expanded once more.
Important Technical Specifications
- Power Source: The device is powered by 12V Li-Ion batteries.
- Battery Capacity: Each battery has a capacity of 5.0Ah and 60Wh. The kit includes two such batteries.
- Charger: A 220V 50Hz charger is provided for recharging the batteries.
- Expanding Heads: The kit includes various expanding heads to accommodate different pipe diameters:
- 16 x 1.8/2.0/2.2mm
- 20 x 1.9/2.0/2.2mm
- 25 x 2.3/3.5mm
- The manual also mentions 32 x 2.9mm and 32 x 4.4mm, but explicitly states "DO NOT USE WITH PIPES 32 x 4,4!".
- Expansion Capacity: The approximate number of expansions depends on the pipe diameter:
- 16 x 1.8: 4 expansions
- 16 x 2.2: 6 expansions
- 20 x 1.9: 6 expansions
- 20 x 2.8: 12 expansions
- 25 x 2.3: 8 expansions
- 25 x 3.5: 20 expansions
- 32 x 2.9: 12 expansions
- Leak Test Specifications:
- The joint can be pressurized after 30 minutes at temperatures up to +5°C.
- At lower temperatures, the waiting time increases:
- +5°C to +1°C: 1.5 hours
- ±0°C to -4°C: 3 hours
- -5°C to -9°C: 4 hours
- -10°C to -15°C: 10 hours
- The maximum test pressure should not exceed 20 bar (2.0 MPa).
- At room temperature, after approximately 6 hours, the joint achieves the same strength as the pipe.
- Tightness tests should be carried out according to test procedure A of the standard UNE-CEN / TR 12108 IN: 2015.
Usage Features
- Ergonomic Design: The tool appears to have a pistol-grip design for comfortable handling during operation.
- Trigger Lock: A trigger lock mechanism is included to prevent accidental activation, enhancing safety.
- Digital Display Screen: The device features a digital display screen, though it is noted as "disabled" in the description.
- Portability: Being battery-operated, the tool offers cordless operation, increasing portability and flexibility on job sites.
- Quick Battery Swap: The design allows for easy removal and insertion of batteries.
Maintenance Features
- Cleaning: The expansion head and cone must always be kept clean and greased. Any dust, dirt, or debris should be removed using a clean, lint-free cloth.
- Lubrication: A thin layer of grease should be applied to the expansion head and cone after cleaning. Over-lubrication should be avoided. A tube of lubricant is included in the kit.
- Battery Care:
- The battery pack should be removed before performing any maintenance or work on the machine.
- When charging, batteries should be kept away from water and humidity.
- Environmental Precautions: The tool should not be used in environments with flammable gases, explosive materials, or excessive dust.
Warnings
- Always remove the battery pack before starting any work on the machine.
- Keep the battery away from water and humidity when charging.
