Do you have a question about the ADEMCO 4192CP and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Ademco Model 4192CP is an addressable ionization smoke detector designed for open area protection and compatible with UL-listed Ademco control panels. It utilizes a state-of-the-art unipolar sensing chamber.

Function Description

The 4192CP detector is designed to detect smoke and initiate emergency action when used in conjunction with other compatible equipment. It operates on a 2-wire system, with power (+) and power (-) terminals also facilitating communication between the control panel and the detector(s). An LED on each detector provides visual feedback: it flashes every ten seconds to indicate that power is applied and the detector is working properly. This LED can be latched ON by a code command from certain control panels to indicate an alarm, and can also be unlatched back to the normal blinking condition by code command from the same control panels.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Base Diameter: 5.0 inches (12.7 cm)
  • Cover Height: 3.0 inches (7.6 cm)
  • Cover Diameter: 3.15 inches (8 cm)
  • Voltage Range: 7-11 VDC (with 1 KHz of modulation)
  • Standby Current (max.): 320 microamps
  • Alarm Current Range: 230 microamps min. to 400 microamps max.
  • Operating Temperature Range: 0° to 49°C (32°-120°F)
  • Compatibility: Suitable for use with No. 4152 Point Protection Control Communicator; compatibility ID: A; maximum number of detectors per system is 29.

Usage Features

  • Mounting: The detector comes with a mounting bracket kit allowing for several installation methods:
    • Directly to a 3-inch or 4-inch octagon box (1-1/2 inches deep) using the supplied bracket.
    • To a 4-inch square electrical box using a plaster ring with the supplied mounting bracket.
    • Directly to the ceiling using plastic screw anchors; the bracket serves as a template for drilling 3/16 inch holes.
  • Wiring: For optimal system performance, power (+) and power (-) loop wires should be twisted pair and installed in separate grounded conduit or shielded cable to protect against extraneous electrical interference. Wire connections are made by stripping about 3/8" of insulation and sliding the bare wire under the clamping plate, then tightening the screw. Wires should not be looped under the clamping plate. Signal wiring should be no smaller than 18 gauge (1.0 mm²), with wire sizes up to 12 gauge (2.5 mm²) permissible. All wiring must comply with the National Electrical Code, local codes, and authority having jurisdiction.
  • Identification Number Setting: Before installation, each 4192CP must be assigned a unique identification number by arranging the DIP switch located on the bottom of the unit. This number corresponds to the allocation in the control system programming worksheet.
  • Tamper Proof Feature: The detector includes a tamper-proof feature that prevents removal without a tool. To activate, a smaller tab on the mounting bracket (at the scribed line) is broken off before installation. To remove the detector once this feature is active, a tamper-proof tab in the slot on the mounting bracket must be depressed while turning the detector counterclockwise.
  • Sensitivity Testing: Detectors must be tested after installation and periodically. Sensitivity can be tested in two ways:
    • Test Switch: Push and hold the recessed test switch for 10 seconds. An alarm should be annunciated at the control system or console within 10 seconds.
    • Control Panel Test: Sensitivity can also be tested from the control panel, though specific procedures vary by panel.
    • Before testing, proper authorities should be notified, and the system should be disabled to prevent unwanted alarms. If the LED does not flash, power loss or a defective unit is indicated.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning: Regular cleaning is essential. The 4192CP is cleaned as follows:
    1. Remove the detector screen and cover assembly by depressing three lockprongs on top of the cover, rotating counterclockwise, and pulling the assembly away.
    2. Remove the screen from the cover.
    3. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust from the screen, cover, and sensing chamber.
    4. After cleaning, snap the screen into the cover, then place the cover and screen assembly back onto the detector, turning clockwise until it locks in place.
    5. After cleaning, the detector must be tested for sensitivity.
    6. Notify proper authorities that the system is back online.
  • General Maintenance: The manufacturer recommends testing the smoke detector system per NFPA 72E at least semiannually and cleaning detectors regularly. While detectors are designed to last over 10 years, electronic parts can fail, so regular care is crucial.

Limitations of Smoke Detectors

It is important to note that smoke detectors have limitations:

  • They require power to operate; AC or DC powered detectors will not work if the power supply is cut off.
  • They may not sense fires where smoke does not reach them (e.g., in chimneys, walls, roofs, or behind closed doors).
  • They may not detect fires on different levels of a building; detectors should be on every level.
  • Ionization detectors are better at detecting fast, flaming fires, while photoelectronic detectors are better at smoldering fires. Neither type is always best, and a given detector may not always provide a warning.
  • They cannot provide warnings for fires resulting from inadequate fire protection practices, violent explosions, escaping gas, improper storage of flammable liquids, other safety hazards, or arson.
  • Smoke detectors contain electronic parts that can fail over time.
