No. 6 in a series Dr. Goodman, D.V.M.
LABRADOR RETRIEVERS
BACKGROUND
The Labrador Retriever first appeared as a
breed in England in the late 1800’s. A 
descendant of working dogs brought to 
Europe from Newfoundland, the breed is 
a relative of other retrievers, such as the 
Golden Retriever, the Flat-Coated 
Retriever, and the Chesapeake Bay 
Retriever. The Labrador’s generous temper-
ment and trainability make it a favorite for 
breeders, who often cross the Labrador 
with other breeds to produce dogs with a 
combination of of desirable traits. One inter-
esting result of such cross-breeding is the 
Labradoodle, the curly-coated product of 
the Labrador and the Standard Poodle, and 
sure to attract attention on any dogwalk.
Often considered one of the most
perfect companions for people of
all ages.
