Overview

This document provides a comprehensive user manual for an AEG freezer, model ABE81816NC, covering safety information, installation, operation, daily use, hints and tips, care and cleaning, troubleshooting, and environmental concerns.

Function Description

The AEG freezer is designed for household and similar applications, specifically for freezing fresh food and storing frozen and deep-frozen food for extended periods. It features a FROSTMATIC function to accelerate the freezing of fresh food and protect existing frozen items from warming. The appliance is frost-free, eliminating the need for manual defrosting as frost does not build up on internal walls or food. It also includes a DrinksChill function, which sets an acoustic alarm for cooling food products or as a reminder for items placed in the freezer for fast cooling. The freezer is equipped with one or more trays for ice-cube production and contains at least one cold accumulator to extend storage time during power outages.

Usage Features

The freezer's operation is managed via a control panel with a display that shows the set temperature, active functions, and alarm indicators.

  • Switching On/Off: The appliance is switched on by connecting it to the power socket and pressing the ON/OFF button. To switch off, press the ON/OFF button for 5 seconds and then disconnect from the mains.
  • Temperature Regulation: The temperature can be adjusted using dedicated temperature regulators. The default set temperature for the freezer is -18°C. The set temperature is reached within 24 hours and is retained after a power failure.
  • FROSTMATIC Function: This function is activated via the Mode button and confirmed with the OK button. It accelerates freezing and automatically deactivates after 52 hours. It can also be manually switched off or by selecting a different set temperature.
  • ChildLock Function: To prevent unintentional operation, the ChildLock function can be activated by selecting it via the Mode button and confirming with OK. It can be deactivated by repeating the process.
  • DrinksChill Function: Activated through the Mode button, this function allows users to set a timer (from 1 to 90 minutes) for cooling items. An acoustic alarm sounds at the end of the countdown, which can be silenced by pressing OK. The timer can be adjusted during the countdown.
  • High Temperature Alarm: An audible alarm and flashing icons indicate an increase in freezer compartment temperature (e.g., due to a power failure). Pressing any button silences the buzzer, and the alarm indicator continues to flash until normal conditions are restored.
  • Door Open Alarm: If the door remains open for approximately 90 seconds, an acoustic alarm sounds and the alarm indicator flashes. Closing the door stops the alarm. The acoustic signal can be muted by pressing any button during the alarm.
  • Freezing Fresh Food: For optimal freezing, it is recommended to run the appliance with the FROSTMATIC function for at least 2 hours before placing fresh food. Fresh food should be placed in the two top compartments. The maximum freezing capacity within 24 hours is specified on the rating plate. No other food should be added during the 24-hour freezing process.
  • Thawing Frozen Food: Deep-frozen or frozen food can be thawed in the refrigerator compartment or at room temperature. Small pieces can be cooked directly from frozen, though this will require longer cooking times.
  • Ice-Cube Production: Water-filled ice trays should be placed in the freezer compartment. Metallic instruments should not be used to remove trays.
  • Cold Accumulators: The freezer includes cold accumulators to maintain temperature during power cuts. These should not be removed from the freezer basket.

Maintenance Features

Regular care and cleaning are essential for the appliance's performance and longevity.

  • General Cleaning: Before first use, the interior and all internal accessories should be washed with lukewarm water and a neutral soap, then thoroughly dried. Harsh detergents, abrasive powders, chlorine, or oil-based cleaners should not be used as they can damage the finish.
  • Periodic Cleaning: The appliance should be cleaned regularly. The inside and accessories should be cleaned with lukewarm water and neutral soap. Door seals should be checked and wiped clean to ensure they are free from debris. If accessible, the condenser and compressor at the back of the appliance should be cleaned with a brush to improve performance and save electricity.
  • Defrosting: The freezer compartment is frost-free, meaning manual defrosting is not required.
  • Periods of Non-Operation: For long periods of non-use, the appliance should be disconnected from the electricity supply, all food removed, and the interior cleaned. The door should be left open to prevent unpleasant smells. If the appliance is to remain switched on, it should be checked periodically to prevent food spoilage in case of a power failure.
  • Door Gaskets: To ensure proper door closure, the door gaskets should be cleaned. If necessary, the door should be adjusted or defective gaskets replaced by an Authorised Service Centre.
  • Refrigerant Circuit: The appliance contains hydrocarbons in its cooling unit. Maintenance and recharging of the unit must only be carried out by authorized technicians. Damage to the refrigerant circuit should be avoided. If damage occurs, ensure no flames or ignition sources are present in the room and ventilate the area.
