Overview

The Air+Health™ Haven is a whole-home air purification system designed to sterilize and reduce airborne microorganisms within a home's heating or air conditioning system. It utilizes powerful ultraviolet (UVC) light rays to purify the air continuously, 24 hours a day. The unit is installed in the main supply or return duct of the home's HVAC system.

Function Description:

The Haven unit emits UVC light, which is effective at sterilizing and reducing airborne microorganisms. As air passes through the HVAC system and over the UVC lamp, these microorganisms are exposed to the ultraviolet light, leading to their inactivation. This process helps to improve indoor air quality by reducing the presence of bacteria, viruses, mold spores, and other airborne pathogens. The system is designed for a closed duct environment, ensuring that UVC light exposure is contained within the HVAC system.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual provides sizing guidelines based on square footage:

  • Up to 2000 sq ft: 1 unit, 120 Volts, 30 Watts, 0.5 Amps, 60 Hz.
  • 4000 sq ft: 2 units, 120 Volts, 30 Watts, 0.5 Amps, 60 Hz. These specifications apply to ducts at least 16 inches wide. For homes with multiple HVAC systems, one unit per system is recommended. Larger applications may require multiple units. The UVC Germicidal Lamp has a part number of 602607301.

Usage Features:

  • Continuous Operation: The Haven unit operates continuously to purify the air in the home 24 hours a day, providing ongoing protection against airborne microorganisms.
  • Safety Switch: The mounting base incorporates a built-in safety switch that must be properly engaged for the unit to operate. This ensures the unit is securely installed before the lamp can activate. If the blue glow from the lamp is not seen, users are instructed to check that the base is mounted tightly and the plated washer top of the switch is raised approximately 3/16", indicating full engagement.
  • View Port Hole: A view port hole, made of glass, is integrated into the mounting base. This allows users to visually confirm that the UVC lamp is operating (indicated by a blue glow) without being exposed to UVC rays.
  • Installation Flexibility: The unit can be mounted in either a vertical or horizontal position in the ductwork. The manual provides detailed instructions for both duct board and metal plenum mounting, accommodating various HVAC system configurations.
  • System Compatibility: The product is designed for use on gas-fired, oil-fired, electric, and split-system heat pump forced air systems. It is not designed for outdoor mounting on gas-fired or heat pump packaged units.

Maintenance Features:

  • UVC Lamp Inspection and Cleaning: It is recommended to inspect and clean the UVC lamp every 6 months. This frequency may vary depending on the home environment, the condition of conventional filters, and the duration of use. Cleaning helps maintain the lamp's maximum output intensity.
  • UVC Lamp Replacement: The UVC lamp should be replaced annually to maintain its maximum output intensity and light effectiveness. The manual provides a step-by-step replacement procedure.
  • Replacement Reminder Magnet: A reminder magnet is included with the unit, allowing users to note the installation date and track when the lamp needs to be replaced.
  • Safety Procedures for Maintenance: The manual emphasizes the importance of unplugging the unit before any inspection or cleaning. It also advises wearing disposable, non-absorbent protective gloves during maintenance procedures, especially in case of accidental glass breakage, as the lamp contains mercury.
  • Disposal Guidelines: Instructions are provided for the safe disposal of old UVC lamps, which contain a small amount of mercury. Users are advised to check with their local waste management authority for specific disposal or recycling requirements, noting that these types of lamps may generally be disposed of as household waste according to the EPA's Universal Waste Rule.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A dedicated section addresses common issues such as the UVC lamp not lighting up, offering solutions like checking the safety switch engagement, rotating the ballast, or replacing the lamp/ballast. It also includes detailed safety instructions for handling broken lamps, including wearing gloves, vacuuming the area, and proper disposal of contaminated materials.

Safety Considerations (Emphasized throughout the manual):

  • UVC Light Exposure: Never expose eyes or skin to UVC light from any source, as direct exposure can cause permanent eye damage or blindness. The unit should never be operated outside of the plenum.
  • Handling the Lamp: Avoid touching the glass portion of the lamp with bare hands, as oils can reduce light intensity. Gloves are recommended during installation and replacement.
  • Material Compatibility: UVC light can break down plastic materials not rated for UV exposure (e.g., wire insulation, flex duct, drain pans, humidifiers). The unit must be mounted at least 30 inches away from such materials, or they must be shielded with aluminum foil or sheet metal.
  • Installation Location: Do not mount the unit under a humidifier to prevent water damage or electric shock. It is designed for indoor installation only (attics, crawl spaces, basements).
  • Duct Sealing: All duct openings in the direct line of sight of the UV light must be sealed with aluminum tape or equivalent methods to prevent UVC light leakage. Joints and seams of the plenum near the mounting location should also be sealed.
  • Electrical Safety: Always turn off all power and unplug the unit before installing or servicing to prevent electrical shock.
  • Mercury Content: The lamp contains mercury. In case of breakage, avoid touching the contents directly. Follow specific cleanup and disposal procedures, including wearing gloves, cleaning with a vacuum, and proper disposal of materials. If skin is pierced or internal contents are exposed, wash hands and seek medical attention.
