Overview

This document is an owner's manual for AKONA inflatable kayaks, specifically covering the DRIFTER, GRAND, and GRAND XL models.

Function Description

The AKONA inflatable kayaks are designed for recreational paddling on water. They are portable and can be inflated for use and deflated for storage and transport. The kayaks are suitable for individuals who enjoy paddle sports and wish to explore various water environments.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual provides specifications for three models:

  • DRIFTER Single Inflatable Kayak:
    • Size: 9'L x 35"W
    • Capacity: 250 lbs
  • GRAND Single Inflatable Kayak:
    • Size: 9'L x 35"W
    • Capacity: 250 lbs
  • GRAND XL Single Inflatable Kayak:
    • Size: 9'L x 35"W
    • Capacity: 250 lbs

All AKONA Kayak products come with a one-year warranty on parts and manufacturer defects, and a two-year hull warranty. This warranty excludes damage due to misuse, improper care, handling impact damage, and light abrasions.

Usage Features

The kayaks are designed for ease of assembly and use.

Assembly Instructions:

  1. Preparation: Find a flat, large surface free of protruding objects to inflate the kayak. Unroll the kayak completely from its packaging.
  2. Bladder Ring and Valves: Ensure the bladder ring is securely fastened to the side tubes and floor, and that the Boston valves are securely fastened to the ring plate.
  3. Inflating Side Tubes: Unscrew the top of the Boston valve, insert the pump hose, and inflate the side tubes to 2.0 PSI. DO NOT OVER INFLATE. Screw the top of the Boston valve back on once inflated.
  4. Inflating Floor: Inflate the floor to 1.0 PSI. Unscrew the top of the Boston valve, insert the pump hose, and inflate the floor. DO NOT OVER INFLATE. Screw the top of the Boston valve back on.
    • Note: If the kayak appears twisted, the bladders may need to be deflated slightly and repositioned. Access points are available on the kayak for adjustment. If repositioning is needed, inflate side tubes first, then the floor.
  5. Seat Installation: Place the seat(s) in the kayak cockpit. The seat connects to the floor with Velcro and tensioning straps with clips for adjustability. Position the seat(s) to balance the kayak. For double kayaks, the heavier paddler should be in the back.
  6. Strap Adjustment: Once seats are in place and tensioning straps are clipped to the D-rings, adjust for paddler comfort.
  7. Center Seat/Footrests (Optional): Depending on the model, a self-inflating center seat (for doubles) and footrests may be provided. Inflate the center seat using a tube and secure it in the middle of the kayak with Velcro. Footrests are also placed using Velcro, depending on the paddler's position.
  8. Fin Installation: Place the kayak upside down on a smooth surface. Insert the front section of the fin into the fin box. Pull the fin back while pushing it into the fin box. Once correctly inserted, the quick release pin will slide easily into the slot in the back to secure it.

Safety Recommendations:

  • PFD Use: It is strongly recommended to use a US Coast Guard Approved PFD or Transport Canada Approved PFD (personal flotation device or life jacket) during paddle outings. Check local government rules, as some states/countries require a PFD.
  • Environmental Awareness: Learn to read water and weather conditions. Do not leave shore unprepared. Consult tide charts, maps, experts, and weather forecasts.
  • Buddy System: It is recommended to paddle with a friend.
  • Adult Supervision: Minors should not kayak without adult supervision.
  • Intended Use: Use the kayak only for its intended purpose; misuse will void the warranty.
  • Skill Level: Exercise safe kayaking and do not attempt maneuvers or kayak in conditions beyond your ability.
  • Impairment: Do not operate the vessel while intoxicated or under the influence of any substance that impairs judgment.
  • Natural Hazards: Be aware of offshore winds, currents, and the forces of nature.
  • Instruction: Receive paddle sport instructions from a licensed or certified instructor.
  • Appropriate Dress: Dress appropriately for weather conditions to avoid hypothermia in cold water/weather.
  • Equipment Check: Check equipment for wear or failure before each use.
  • Water Levels/Changes: Be aware of appropriate river water levels, tidal changes, dangerous currents, and weather changes.
  • Paddling Ability: Do not exceed your paddling ability.
  • Medical Consultation: Consult a physician before beginning paddle sport training.
  • Potential Hazards: Be on the lookout for other boats, weather, and natural dangers.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning and Care:

  • Routine Cleaning: The kayak usually only requires a quick rinse with fresh water to keep the hull clean.
  • Thorough Cleaning: If more cleaning is needed, use mild soap, water, and a soft clean cloth to wash the surfaces.
  • Avoid Dragging: Do not drag the kayak to minimize damage.
  • Transport: This inflatable kayak is designed for compact storage and travel. Due to its light weight when inflated, it will travel poorly if strapped to a vehicle rooftop. Damages or warping from improper transport are not covered by the manufacturer's warranty. When transporting, ensure no sharp objects are near the kayak.
  • Heat Protection: Keep the kayak away from heat-producing items like camp stoves or propane lamps. Damages from heat are not covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

Long Term Storage:

  • Drying and Cleaning: Empty all water and clean the kayak by rinsing with freshwater, especially if used in saltwater or muddy conditions.
  • Sunlight Protection: Store out of direct sunlight and indoors if possible, as UV exposure can shorten the lifespan and degrade the finish.
  • Strap/Rope Management: Do not leave straps or ropes tightly wound around the hull for extended periods, as this can cause deformation.
  • Deflation and Rolling: Store the kayak deflated, rolled up, and placed back into its roller backpack. Ensure the board is completely dry before rolling to prevent mildew or mold.
  • Rolling Procedure: When rolling, ensure the valve is open and start rolling from the nose. Roll tightly and straight. Close the valve and wrap the strap around the roll.
  • Surface Avoidance: AVOID standing the rolled board on its side on rough surfaces like concrete or rocks, as this can damage the first layer of the rail.

Short Term Storage:

  • Drying: Empty all water from the kayak.
  • Position: The kayak can be stored on its side or in a vertical position temporarily. However, extended storage in these positions can cause flattening or deformation of the hull.
  • Paddle Storage: Unclip and dismantle the paddle to allow it to air dry.
