Overview

The AL-KO Combi Care 38E Comfort is a versatile electric scarifier/aerator designed for private use in maintaining lawns. Its primary function is to loosen and aerate lawns, a process commonly known as scarifying, to promote healthier grass growth. The machine is specifically intended for use on dried, short-mown lawns, ensuring optimal performance and preventing damage to the turf. Any application outside of this designated use, such as commercial operations, is considered misuse and is not permitted.

Function Description

The Combi Care 38E Comfort operates by means of a rotating blade system that penetrates the lawn surface. This action helps to remove thatch, moss, and other organic debris that can accumulate and hinder water, nutrient, and air penetration to the grass roots. The machine is equipped with an operator presence control, a crucial safety feature that immediately stops the machine when released, preventing unsupervised operation. A rear flap is also integrated into the design, contributing to the overall safety and functionality during use.

A visual safety indicator is provided to confirm that the work shaft is correctly secured. When the green mark is visible (approximately 5 mm), it indicates that the work shaft is properly engaged, allowing for safe operation. The machine's motor is protected by a motor protection switch, which automatically shuts off the scarifier/aerator if the motor becomes overloaded. This mechanism safeguards the motor from potential damage due to excessive strain.

The working depth of the blade shaft is adjustable, allowing users to tailor the scarifying intensity to the specific condition of their lawn and the wear of the blades. This adjustability is critical for effective lawn care, as an incorrect working depth can lead to the scarifier stopping or the motor stalling.

Usage Features

Before starting the machine, users are instructed to read the operating instructions thoroughly to ensure safe and trouble-free handling. Assembly of the machine is straightforward, guided by illustrations provided in the manual, and it must be fully assembled before operation. A visual check is recommended prior to each startup to ensure that the blade system and all fastening parts are secure, undamaged, and free from wear.

To operate the machine, the power cable must be connected to a mains socket equipped with a residual-current circuit breaker (RCCB) to prevent electrical hazards. The power cable should be coiled into a loop and hooked into the cable strain relief, ensuring enough slack for the strain relief to slide freely.

Starting the motor involves a two-step process: first, pushing and holding the button of the safety pushbutton switch, and then pulling the operator presence control against the handlebar. The motor will start as long as the operator presence control is held. Releasing the operator presence control will automatically switch off the motor, and the blade shaft will continue to turn under its own momentum for a short period. Users are warned not to reach under the machine immediately after switching off.

Setting the working depth is a key operational feature. This adjustment should only be performed when the motor is switched off and the blade shaft has come to a complete stop. The machine is tilted backward with the handlebar, and the twist switch is pushed down and turned to the desired level on the dial selector (levels 1-5). For new blades, it is recommended to set the dial selector to position 2 at most. It is also advised to mow the lawn before scarifying to achieve the best results.

The machine includes a grass catcher, which can be hooked in or unhooked after the motor is switched off and the blade shaft has stopped. During operation, users are reminded to keep the power cable out of the working area and to maintain a safe distance from rotating parts. The machine should only be controlled using the handlebar to ensure the necessary safety clearance.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance and care are essential for the longevity and safe operation of the Combi Care 38E Comfort. Users are advised to wear protective gloves when working on the blade shaft due to the risk of injury. Before any maintenance or cleaning work, the machine must be disconnected from the mains, and the blade shaft must be allowed to come to a complete stop.

The motor enclosure should not be opened by the user; any maintenance requiring access to the motor must be performed by an authorized specialist workshop. The machine should not be sprayed with water, as water ingress can cause irreparable damage to the motor and the safety pushbutton switch. After each use, the machine should be cleaned with a scraper or cloth.

Replacing worn or damaged implements and pins should be done as a set to avoid imbalances in the blade system. Only genuine spare parts should be used for replacements.

The manual provides detailed instructions for removing the blades and the aerator roller. This process involves unscrewing a hexagon bolt, carefully pulling off the ball bearing, thrust ring, washer, and short spacer tube, and then removing the blades and long spacer tubes one after another. Installation is performed in the reverse sequence. The aerator roller, including the steel spring tines, is removed and renewed in a similar manner to the blade shaft.

A troubleshooting guide is included to help users address common malfunctions, such as the motor not running, the shaft not rotating, the motor losing power, poor scarifying performance, or the machine vibrating. For issues that cannot be resolved using this guide, users are directed to an authorized specialist workshop.

The machine and its packaging are made from recyclable materials, and users are instructed to dispose of worn-out machines and spent batteries (including rechargeable batteries) in accordance with local regulations, not in domestic waste.
