CAUTION:Transmissionmalfunctionordamagemayoccurif
youoperatethetransmissionwiththeuidtemperaturebelowthe
minimumuidtemperaturespecicationlimit.
3.4HIGHFLUIDTEMPERATURE
Thetransmissionisconsideredtobeoverheatedwhenanyofthefollowing
temperaturesareexceeded:
Sumpuid121°C(250°F)
Fluidtocooler
149°C(300°F)
Retarderoutuid165°C(330°F)
Typicalcontinuoussumptemperatureis93°C(200°F).
Ifthetransmissionoverheatsduringnormaloperation,makesurethe
transmissionuidleveliscorrect.Referto5.8PERIODICFLUIDLEVEL
CHECKS.
CAUTION:Theengineshouldneverbeoperatedformorethan10
secondsatfullthrottlewiththetransmissioninrangeandtheoutput
stalled.Prolongedoperationofthistypewillcausethetransmission
uidtemperaturetobecomeexcessivelyhighandwillcausesevere
overheatdamagetothetransmission.
Iftheenginetemperaturegaugeindicatesahightemperature,the
transmissionisprobablyoverheated.Stopthevehicleandcheckthecooling
system.Ifitappearstobefunctioningproperly,runtheengineat1200–1500
rpmwiththetransmissioninN(Neutral).Thisshouldreducethetransmission
andenginetemperaturestonormaloperatinglevelsin2or3minutes.
Ifthetransmissionandenginetemperaturesdonotdecrease,reducethe
enginerpm.Iftheenginetemperatureindicatesahightemperature,anengine
orradiatorproblemisindicated.Ifhightemperatureineithertheengineor
transmissionpersists,stoptheengineandhavetheoverheatingcondition
investigatedbymaintenancepersonnel.
NOTE:Someshiftschedulesmaybeinhibitedasaresultofoperating
conditions,suchasengineortransmissionuidtemperature.
