Question and Answer IconNeed help?

Do you have a question about the Alpine 7289M and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Alpine 7289M is a digital FM/MW/LW cassette player designed for in-dash installation in vehicles with 12-volt negative ground electrical systems. It features a DIN size chassis and a variety of controls, including a backlit, computer-like keypad and a selectable fader. The unit incorporates Alpine's proprietary T-10 II Tuner section with a digital PLL-frequency synthesizer and a fully automatic, auto-reverse cassette player.

Function Description:

  • Tuner: The 7289M includes a digital FM/MW/LW tuner. It supports both manual and automatic tuning, allowing users to find stations by seeking or manually adjusting the frequency. The tuner can store up to 30 preset stations across FM1, FM2, MW, LW, and a D.A.P. (Direct Access Preset) band. The D.A.P. band allows for mixing MW, LW, and FM stations, eliminating the need to switch bands.
  • Cassette Player: The unit features a fully automatic, auto-reverse cassette player. It supports C-60 and C-90 type cassette tapes, with automatic metal tape equalization. The cassette player includes features like Fast Forward (FF), Rewind (REW), Repeat, Tape Scan, and Blank Skip.
  • Audio Controls: The device offers comprehensive audio control with BASS and TREBLE slide controls, a LOUDness switch for boosting low and high frequencies, and a selectable FADER. The fader can operate in either pre-amp or power amp mode, balancing front and rear speaker sound in a four-speaker system. A TONE BYPASS switch is also available to bypass the unit's tone control circuitry if an external audio system provides tone control.
  • Traffic Information Reception (SDK): This feature, primarily for West Germany, allows the unit to receive traffic announcements broadcast on FM. When an SDK signal is detected, the SK indicator lights up. In SDK mode, only traffic information stations can be tuned, and other stations are muted. If the signal becomes too weak, an alarm will sound to prompt the user to tune to a stronger SDK station.
  • Pre-In On/Off Switch: This switch electronically separates the tuner/deck portion from the internal amplifier, allowing the integration of an Alpine CD player or signal processor while still using the 7289M's built-in power.

Usage Features:

  • QRB (Quick Release Bracket): Alpine's exclusive QRB design allows for easy removal of the 7289M for security purposes, while maintaining memory backup. The unit can be hidden or carried for theft prevention.
  • HLTAC™ Tape Head: Provides an extended flat frequency response.
  • Dolby® B- and C-Type Noise Reduction: Reduces background noise by 10 dB with Dolby B and 20 dB with Dolby C compared to tapes without noise reduction.
  • One Touch Music Sensor: Automatically fast forwards through the current music selection to the beginning of the next and begins playback. It can also rewind to the beginning of the current selection.
  • Ignition "Key Off" Pause: If the ignition is turned off while a cassette is playing, the tape head and pinch roller disengage, but the cassette remains in the deck. Playback resumes from where it left off when the ignition is turned on again.

Maintenance Features:

  • Fuse Replacement: When replacing fuses, use replacements of the same amperage. If fuses blow repeatedly, check electrical connections for shorts and have the car's voltage regulator checked. Do not attempt self-repair; return the unit to an Alpine dealer.
  • Temperature Range: Ensure the car's interior temperature is between 14°F (-10°C) and 140°F (60°C) for proper operation. Good air circulation is essential to prevent heat build-up.
  • Cassette Care:
    • C-120 type cassette tapes are not recommended.
    • Prevent foreign objects from entering the cassette opening to avoid damage to the mechanism and tape head.
    • Store cassette tapes in a cool place, away from dust, dirt, direct sun, and strong magnetic sources.
    • Before inserting a tape, ensure any slack is taken up by inserting a pencil or similar instrument into the spindle hole and turning until the tape is taut.
  • Handle Security: In case of road vibration, rapid acceleration, or collision, ensure the QRB handle is fully down to prevent the unit from dislodging, which could cause injury or damage.
  • Cleaning: When playback sound deteriorates, clean the playback head by inserting a special head cleaning cassette into the tape-loading slot and allowing it to run for a few minutes.
