Overview

The Alpine TME-M780 is a 7.0-inch wide VGA LCD monitor designed for rear seat entertainment, accompanied by a black box interface. The TME-M780EM is an extra monitor that can be connected to the system. This system allows passengers to enjoy video content and other media while on the go.

Function Description

The core function of the TME-M780 system is to provide a visual display for rear seat entertainment. The 7.0-inch wide VGA LCD monitor offers a clear picture for viewing various media sources. The "black box" acts as an AV interface unit, managing multiple audio and video inputs and outputs, as well as power and control signals for the monitors.

The system supports multiple input sources, allowing users to switch between different devices such as DVD players or TV tuners. The black box features AUX1, AUX2, and AUX3 audio and video input connectors. The AUX3 input has a selection switch ("IN" or "OUT" position) which determines whether AUX3 acts as an input or an output. When in the "IN" position, AUX3 functions as an input, allowing connection of an additional audio/video source. When in the "OUT" position, AUX3 functions as an output, allowing the audio and video signals from the system to be sent to other products.

The system includes a remote control sensor on the monitor, which receives signals from connected Alpine products like DVD players and TV tuners, enabling convenient control of these devices.

For audio output, the system provides headphone jacks (Headphones sold separately) for private listening, ensuring that the driver is not distracted by the rear seat entertainment.

Usage Features

Basic Operation:

  • Screen Display ON/OFF: The monitor's display can be turned on or off by pressing the POWER button. If properly connected, the main power of the monitors will turn off automatically when the vehicle's ignition switch is off.
  • Adjusting the Volume: The volume level can be adjusted using the V or ∧ buttons on the monitor.
  • Switching the Source: The SELECT button allows users to cycle through available input sources (AUX1, AUX2, AUX3). The behavior of AUX3 depends on the AUX3 SELECTION S/W setting on the black box. If AUX3 SELECTION S/W is "IN," the sequence is AUX1 → AUX2 → AUX3. If AUX3 SELECTION S/W is "OUT," the sequence is AUX1 → AUX2. If the current screen mode is AUX3 and the AUX3 SELECTION S/W is switched to "OUT," the screen mode will automatically change to AUX1.
  • Switching the Display Mode: The DISP button cycles through different display modes: WIDE, NORMAL, and ZOOM.
    • WIDE: Normal images are expanded uniformly in the horizontal direction to fill the entire screen.
    • NORMAL: Displays the normal 4:3 image.
    • ZOOM: Normal images are expanded in the horizontal direction and displayed over the entire screen, with the expansion ratio increasing towards the right and left edges of the screen.
  • Adjusting Display Settings: By pressing and holding the DISP button for at least 2 seconds, an adjustment menu appears. Users can then press DISP to select the mode to be adjusted (BRIGHT, CONTRAST, COLOR, DIMMER, IR-TX, RESET, EXIT) and use the V or ∧ buttons to make adjustments.
    • Brightness Adjustment (BRIGHT): Allows adjustment of the picture's brightness from 0 to 63.
    • Contrast Adjustment (CONTRAST): Allows adjustment of the picture's contrast from 0 to 63.
    • Color Depth Adjustment (COLOR): Allows adjustment of the picture's color depth from 0 to 63.
    • Dimmer Adjustment (DIMMER): Sets the backlighting value from 0 to 15.
    • IR-TX Adjustment (IR-TX): Enables or disables the use of IR headphones.
    • Reset: Restores system settings to factory defaults.
    • Exit: Exits the setup menu and returns to normal mode. After completing adjustments, pressing and holding the DISP button for at least 2 seconds will return the screen to normal mode. If no operation is made for 5 seconds after selecting an adjustment mode, the mode will be cleared.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • Problem Resolution: In case of difficulty, a checklist is provided to help diagnose common issues such as no function/display, no picture display, poor picture color, or spots/dotted lines/stripes. Users are advised to check connections, fuses, battery voltage, VTR mode settings, and temperature. If the problem persists, consulting an authorized Alpine dealer or service center is recommended.
  • Fuse Replacement: When replacing fuses, it is crucial to use a replacement with the same amperage rating as indicated on the fuse holder. Repeated fuse blowing suggests a short circuit in the electrical connections or an issue with the vehicle's voltage regulator, requiring professional inspection.
  • Cleaning: The manual does not explicitly detail cleaning procedures, but general care for electronic devices applies. Avoid abrasive cleaners and excessive moisture.
  • Temperature Considerations: The unit should be operated within a temperature range of 0°C (+32°F) to +45°C (+113°F). Under cold conditions, the screen may temporarily lose contrast but will return to normal after a short warm-up. After turning the system off, a slight ghost image may temporarily remain, which is normal for LCD technology.
  • Installation Location: To ensure longevity and proper function, the TME-M780 and TME-M780EM should not be exposed to direct sun and heat, high humidity, excessive dust, or excessive vibrations. The black box should not be mounted in locations exposed to moisture or extreme heat, such as the engine compartment.

Installation Precautions (Relevant to Maintenance):

  • Correct Connections: All connections must be made correctly according to the provided diagrams to prevent fire or product damage. Incorrect connections can lead to malfunction or damage to the vehicle's electrical system.
  • Power Disconnection: Always disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal before installation to prevent short-circuits.
  • Wiring Arrangement: Cables and wiring should be arranged to prevent entanglement with surrounding objects, crimping, or pinching by sharp metal edges. If wiring passes through metal, a rubber grommet should be used to protect insulation.
  • Fuse Amperage: When connecting to the vehicle's fuse box, ensure the correct amperage fuse is used for the intended circuit of the TME-M780 and TME-M780EM.
  • Noise Prevention: To prevent external noise from entering the audio system, the unit and leads should be routed at least 10 cm away from the car harness. Battery power leads should be kept as far as possible from other leads. The ground lead should be securely connected to a bare metal spot on the car chassis. If a noise suppressor is added, it should be connected as far away from the unit as possible. Consulting an Alpine dealer for noise prevention measures is recommended.
  • Professional Installation: Due to the technical skill and experience required for wiring and installation, it is recommended to have the work done by experts or the dealer where the product was purchased.
  • Accessory Parts: Only specified accessory parts should be used for installation to prevent internal damage or insecure mounting.

The LCD panel is manufactured using high-precision technology, with an effective pixel ratio over 99.99%. A small possibility (0.01%) exists that some pixels may be permanently on or off, which is considered normal.
