Opening an SF
6
gas insulating apparatus
Precautions
to take
When opening an SF
6
gas insulating apparatus, take the following
precautions :
S Never try to open an SF
6
gas insulating apparatus before completely
draining it of gas and setting it at atmospheric pressure.
S When opening switchgear likely to contain solid by--products (dust), for
example circuit breakers, make sure there is efficient local ventilation or, if
this is not the case, set up ventilation.
S Wear appropriate masks to avoid inhaling noxious quantities of solid of
gaseous by--products.
S Wear special work clothing when working with open SF
6
switchgear with
dust by--products. Put this clothing aside as soon as possible for cleaning.
S Do not dust or stir up the dust in SF
6
apparatus: it must be vacuumed
up, and what is left wiped up with dry, non--fluffy cloths. The vacuum filter
must be able to trap particles of a size on the order of 1 m.
S Accessories (cloths, vacuum filters, disposable clothing or gloves, etc.)
that come in contact with the SF
6
gas dissociation by--products must be
collected and neutralised so as to avoid spreading dust.
Neutralisation is by 24--hour immersion in a 3% solution of sodium
carbonate; if the addition of sodium causes bubbles to form, repeat the
treatment.
S Do not swallow or inhale SF
6
gas dissociation by--products, and avoid
dust contact with the skin, eyes and clothing. Make sure the workstation
and all clothing are clean.
Avoid all physical contact, and rinse freely int he event of the slightest
contact.
S Before breaks and the end of work, we recommend washing the face,
neck, arms and hands with soap, rinsing freely and carefully.
S It is forbidden to smoke, drink or eat, or to keep any products to be used
for such near open SF
6
apparatus that has dust by--products, whether
indoors or outdoors.
