Overview

This document describes the Amana Gas Range, a major appliance designed for cooking with both surface burners and an oven.

Function Description:

The Amana Gas Range provides cooking capabilities through sealed surface burners on the cooktop and a multi-functional oven. The cooktop allows for various heat levels, while the oven supports baking, roasting, broiling, and self-cleaning functions. The appliance is equipped with electronic controls for precise temperature and time settings, as well as safety features like an anti-tip bracket and oven control lockout.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Oven Light: Standard 40-watt appliance bulb.
  • Oven Temperature Range (Bake/Roast): 170°F to 525°F (75°C to 275°C) in 5°F (5°C) increments.
  • Oven Temperature Range (Broil): 300°F to 525°F (150°C to 275°C) in 5°F (5°C) increments.
  • Oven Temperature Adjustment: Can be adjusted between 30°F (17°C) and -30°F (-17°C) in 10°F (5° or 6°C) amounts.
  • Timer: Settable up to 12 hours and 59 minutes.
  • Clock: 12-hour cycle.
  • Self-Clean Cycle: HI self-clean time (4 hours 30 minutes) or LO self-clean time (3 hours 30 minutes). The last 30 minutes of the cycles are for cool down. A 12-hour delay is required before another self-clean cycle can be started.
  • Electrical Grounding: Equipped with a three-prong grounding plug, requiring connection to a properly grounded receptacle. Must be electrically grounded in accordance with local codes or the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70 (Canadian Electrical Code in Canada).
  • Cookware Size (Cooktop): Should not extend more than 1/2" (1.3 cm) outside the cooking area.

Usage Features:

  • Electronic Oven Controls: The range features an electronic control panel with keypads for OVEN LIGHT, CLOCK, TIMER SET/OFF, BAKE, BROIL, START, and OFF/CANCEL.
  • Oven Control Lockout: Activated by pressing and holding START for 3 seconds, displaying "Loc." This locks all keypads except CLOCK, OVEN LIGHT, and TIMER SET/OFF.
  • Fahrenheit and Celsius Settings: The oven temperature display can be toggled between Fahrenheit and Celsius by pressing and holding BROIL for 5 seconds.
  • Oven Temperature Calibration: The oven temperature can be adjusted to personalize cooking needs, with adjustments in 10°F (5° or 6°C) increments.
  • Options Mode: Accessed by pressing and holding TIMER SET/OFF for 5 seconds, allowing selection of end-of-cycle tones ("b1" for beep once, "b" for continuous beep) and 12-hour shutoff ("12 Hr" or "- Hr" to disable).
  • Oven Light with Door Open: The oven light can be set to turn on when the door is open ("LOn") or only with the oven light switch ("LOFF").
  • Sabbath Mode: This mode allows the oven to remain on in a Bake setting until turned off, without tones, display temperature, or active Kitchen Timer. The Oven Control Lockout is disabled in this mode. The oven light's state (on/off) must be decided before entering Sabbath Mode and cannot be changed once entered.
  • Surface Burner Ignition: Electric igniters automatically light surface burners when control knobs are turned to IGNITE. In case of power failure, burners can be lit manually with a match.
  • Cooktop Flame Adjustment: Top burner flame size should be adjusted not to extend beyond the edge of the cooking utensil.
  • Oven Racks: Multiple rack positions are available (1-6) for different cooking needs, including baking on 2 racks (positions 2 and 5) and roasting large cuts of meat (position 1).
  • Oven Vent: Located at the rear of the cooktop, it should not be obstructed to ensure proper airflow and cooking results.
  • Preheating: The oven preheats after START is pressed, and a tone sounds when the selected temperature is reached.

Maintenance Features:

  • Anti-Tip Bracket: Essential safety device. Must be properly installed and engaged to prevent the range from tipping. Verification involves sliding the range forward, checking the bracket's attachment to the floor/wall, and sliding the range back so the rear foot is under the bracket.
  • General Cleaning:
    • Cooktop/Oven: Ensure all controls are off and surfaces are cool before cleaning. Avoid oven cleaners, bleach, or rust removers.
    • Sealed Surface Burners: Burner caps should be kept clean and in place. Clogged burner ports can be cleaned with a straight pin (do not enlarge or distort the port).
    • Exterior Porcelain Enamel Surfaces: Clean food spills containing acids promptly to prevent finish damage. Use glass cleaner, mild liquid cleaner, or nonabrasive scrubbing pad.
    • Stainless Steel Surfaces: Avoid soap-filled scouring pads, abrasive cleaners, steel-wool pads, gritty washcloths, or abrasive paper towels. Clean in the direction of the grain.
    • Metallic Paint: Do not use abrasive cleaners, cleaners with bleach, rust removers, ammonia, or sodium hydroxide.
    • Porcelain-Coated Grates and Caps: Clean promptly after spills. Avoid banging them. Do not reassemble caps while wet. Do not clean in the Self-Cleaning cycle. Use nonabrasive plastic scrubbing pad and mildly abrasive cleanser, or dishwasher for grates only.
    • Cooktop Controls: Remove knobs by pulling them straight off. Clean with soap and water. Do not soak knobs.
    • Control Panel and Oven Door Exterior: Clean with glass cleaner and a soft cloth/sponge. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
    • Oven Racks: Clean with a steel-wool pad. For discolored racks, apply a light coating of vegetable oil to the rack guides to improve sliding.
    • Storage Drawer: Ensure it is cool and empty before cleaning. Clean with mild detergent.
    • Oven Cavity: Do not use oven cleaners. Clean food spills when cool.
  • Self-Cleaning Cycle (on some models):
    • Before starting, remove broiler pan and other utensils. Wipe off excessive spillage.
    • Ensure the oven door is completely closed.
    • The oven light will not function during the cycle.
    • After the cycle, remove ash with a damp cloth once the oven has cooled. Avoid applying a cool damp cloth to the inner door glass before it has completely cooled to prevent glass breakage.
    • The oven door will automatically lock during the cycle.
    • A 12-hour delay is required before starting another self-clean cycle if the previous one ran to temperature or was canceled after reaching temperature.

Safety Information:

The manual includes important safety messages, using "DANGER" and "WARNING" symbols to indicate potential hazards. Key safety instructions include:

  • Tip Over Hazard: The range must be secured by a properly installed anti-tip bracket. Do not operate the range without the bracket installed and engaged.
  • Fire Hazard (Cooktop): Do not let burner flames extend beyond cookware edges. Turn off all controls when not cooking.
  • Gas Leaks: If you smell gas, do not light any appliance, touch electrical switches, use a phone in the building. Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor's phone or the fire department. Gas suppliers recommend using a UL or CSA approved gas detector.
  • Space Heater Warning: Never use the appliance as a space heater.
  • Aluminum Foil Warning: Never cover oven slots, holes, or passages, or an entire rack with aluminum foil, as this blocks airflow and can cause carbon monoxide poisoning or fire.
  • Child Safety: Do not store items of interest to children in cabinets above the range or on the backguard.
  • Bird Safety: Fumes from the oven can be harmful to birds; move them to a well-ventilated room when using the oven.
  • Installation and Service: Must be performed by a qualified installer, service agency, or the gas supplier.
  • Electrical Shock Hazard: Plug into a grounded 3-prong outlet. Do not remove the ground prong, use adapters, or extension cords.

This comprehensive description covers the essential aspects of the Amana Gas Range, from its basic functions and technical details to its usage, maintenance, and critical safety considerations.
