Overview

The Anden AS35FP Steam Humidifier is a device designed to introduce humidity into a conditioned space, primarily for agricultural or horticultural applications, as suggested by the "GROW LIGHT" references in the installation diagrams. It operates by boiling water to create steam, which is then dispersed into the air.

Function Description:

The core function of the AS35FP is to generate and disperse steam to increase the humidity level in a controlled environment. It utilizes an electrode-type steam canister where electricity passes through water, causing it to heat to boiling point and produce steam. A fan pack is integrated to help absorb the steam into the surrounding air efficiently. The system includes a control unit (Model 5558 Humidifier Control) that allows users to set and monitor humidity levels, ensuring the desired environment is maintained. The humidifier also incorporates a drain valve operation to manage water levels and prevent mineral buildup.

Important Technical Specifications:

Water Quality and Canister Selection:

The humidifier operates with water having a conductivity between 75 and 1,250 EC (Electrical Conductivity). It is crucial to use cold water and not RO (Reverse Osmosis) or DI (Deionized) water. The manual provides a detailed "WATER QUALITY GUIDELINES" table to help select the appropriate canister (AS80LC or AS80) based on water hardness and the operating voltage (120VAC, 208VAC, or 240VAC). For instance, naturally soft water (0-9 Grains/Gal, 75-300 EC) typically uses an AS80LC canister across all voltages, while harder water types might require an AS80 canister. Extremely hard water (above 36 Grains/Gal, above 1250 EC) or very soft water (75-100 EC) are generally not recommended for installation or require specific canister types.

Steam Capacity:

The humidifier's steam capacity varies significantly with voltage and amperage settings.

  • 11.5 Amps:
    • 120V: 11.5 gal/day
    • 208V: 20.5 gal/day
    • 240V: 23.3 gal/day
  • 16.0 Amps (Nominal/Recommended):
    • 120V: 16.0 gal/day
    • 208V: 30.0 gal/day (recommended)
    • 240V: 34.6 gal/day (recommended)

The capacity can be adjusted via circuit board dip switches. For maximum capacity, the device should be connected to 240V, and the dip switch should be set from 11.5 to 16 Amps. The factory setting for 11.5 Amp nominal operation is indicated, with a recommended setting for 16.0 Amp nominal operation by sliding dip switch #1 to the "ON" position.

Installation Requirements:

  • Humidifier Placement: The humidifier should be installed in a conditioned space. Specific clearances are required: 1-1/2 feet minimum to the ceiling, 2 feet minimum to a side wall, and 16 inches minimum for the steam hose. A "GROW LIGHT" is shown in the vicinity, indicating its intended use in grow environments.
  • Fan Pack Placement: The fan pack should be installed such that steam is dispersed above canopy height, with a recommended 3 to 5 foot path for the steam to dissipate, depending on the drain temperature.
  • Drain Line: A 7/8" drain line must be securely attached with a hose clamp. It requires a constant downward slope and must not be kinked or blocked. If a floor drain is unavailable, a condensate pump can be used. The humidifier tempers drain water to less than 140°F using cold water.
  • Humidifier Control Placement: The control unit (Model 5558) should not be mounted in the flow of supply registers, behind doors or in corners, in direct light, near lighting fixtures or other heat-emitting appliances, or outside in an unconditioned area. A minimum clearance of 18 inches from the ceiling and 5 feet from a side wall is indicated for the control unit.
  • Wiring: The manual provides a detailed wiring diagram for the humidifier control, including connections for the ODT (Outdoor Temperature Sensor), Humidistat, Fan Pack, and Transformer. A critical note emphasizes that the Digital Output Signal Selector Jumper (JP2) must be in the right (dry contact) position to prevent damage to the humidifier when wiring terminals 7 and 8 for 24VAC dry contact.

Usage Features:

  • Humidity Control: The Model 5558 Humidifier Control allows users to program and manage humidity levels. The maximum humidity set point is 90%, with a default preset of 65%. Further programming details are available in the ADMC manual's "Program Mode" section.
  • Indicator Lights: The humidifier provides visual feedback through green indicator lights:
    • Solid "on/off" light: Humidifier is turned on.
    • 1 minute flashing "on/off" light: Power is restored.
    • "Steam" light: Steam is being created.
    • "Fill" light: Water is being added.
    • "Drain" light: Water is draining.
  • Audible Feedback: The humidifier produces various clicking noises from valves and relays during operation, along with the sound of water flowing.
  • Startup and Conditioning: Upon startup or steam canister replacement, it can take at least 30 minutes for the water in the canister to boil and several days for the canister to condition and reach full capacity. Once conditioned, water will boil almost immediately.

Maintenance Features:

  • Drain Valve Operation: The drain valve activates periodically, indicated by the green "Drain" light, to manage water levels and prevent mineral buildup, which is common in electrode humidifiers. This process helps maintain the efficiency and longevity of the canister.
  • Canister Replacement: While not explicitly detailed as a maintenance step, the "Water quality and canister selection" section implies that canisters are consumable and need to be replaced based on water quality and usage. The "On startup and steam canister replacement" note further confirms this.

The Anden AS35FP Steam Humidifier is a robust solution for precise humidity control in specialized environments, emphasizing proper installation, water quality management, and clear operational indicators for effective use.
