Voltage Dividers
There are instances when it is necessary to interface to a voltage source that is higher
than the input range of the module. In these cases a voltage divider is necessary.
DC input Voltage Divider
Two resistor values set up a ratio of voltage drop. These resistors must be sized
appropriately (value and wattage) for the source being monitored. The higher the
resistance values, the less loading effect there will be on the source.
The circuit shown above is a simple two-resistor voltage divider connected to one of the
UI-8-10 module’s inputs. The input circuitry of the module can measure a maximum of
either 5 Volts or 10 Volts (UI-8-10-10V only). Therefore, the voltage measured across
Rinput must not exceed this maximum.
In this case, be sure to switch the pull-up resistor out of the circuit.
