Overview

The Anthem PVA Series is a line of multi-channel power amplifiers designed to deliver high-quality audio performance for both musical and home theater applications. These amplifiers are engineered with a focus on superior circuit design, robust build quality, innovative features, and user-friendly ergonomics, aiming to recreate the passion of live musical performances and the thrill of cinematic experiences. The series includes models with 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8 channels, offering flexibility for various audio setups.

Function Description:

The Anthem PVA Series amplifiers serve as the final stage in an audio system, taking a low-level audio signal from a preamplifier or surround sound processor and amplifying it to drive loudspeakers. Each channel of the amplifier is designed to deliver continuous RMS power across the full audio spectrum (20 Hz to 20 kHz) with minimal distortion. The amplifiers feature multiple input and output options to accommodate different system configurations.

Important Technical Specifications:

Power Output (Continuous RMS, 20 Hz to 20 kHz, <1.0% THD):

  • One Channel Driven (8 Ω, 4 Ω, 2 Ω): 125 W, 200 W, 300 W
  • PVA 2/5/7 All Channels Driven (8 Ω, 4 Ω): 105 W, 140 W
  • PVA 4 All Channels Driven (8 Ω, 4 Ω): 125 W, 165 W
  • PVA 8 All Channels Driven (8 Ω, 4 Ω): 90 W, 120 W

Audio Performance:

  • Frequency Response: 20 Hz to 20 kHz (+0, -0.20 dB), 5 Hz to 100 kHz (+0, -2.5 dB)
  • THD+N: 0.002% at 1 kHz, 0.03% at 20 kHz (125 W into 8 Ω)
  • Power Bandwidth: 10 Hz to 80 kHz (+0, -3 dB, 125 W into 8 Ω)
  • Slew Rate: 28 V/µs
  • Headroom: 1.25 dB (8 Ω), 2.13 dB (4 Ω)
  • Input Sensitivity: 1.12 Vrms for 125 W out into 8 Ω
  • Input Impedance: 10 kΩ
  • Damping Factor: 200 at 1 kHz (ref. 8 Ω)
  • S/N Ratio (ref. 125 W, IEC-A filter): 122 dB
  • Crosstalk: >65 dB (100 Hz to 10 kHz)
  • Voltage Gain: 29 dB

Power Requirement:

  • Power Consumption at maximum power output (8 Ω load):
    • PVA 2: 500 W
    • PVA 4 and PVA 5: 1125 W
    • PVA 7 and PVA 8: 1500 W
  • Low voltage version (120V): Operates from 108V to 132V at 60 Hz.
  • High voltage version (220V, 230V, 240V): Operates from 216V to 264V at 50 or 60 Hz.

Physical Dimensions and Weight:

  • Height: 5 7/8 inches (14.9 cm) including feet (3 rack units without feet)
  • Width: 17 1/4 inches (43.8 cm)
  • Depth:
    • PVA 2: 11 inches (28 cm)
    • PVA 4 and PVA 5: 13 1/4 inches (33.5 cm)
    • PVA 7 and PVA 8: 16 3/8 inches (42 cm)
  • Weight:
    • PVA 2: 26 lb (12 kg)
    • PVA 4: 36.1 lb (16.4 kg)
    • PVA 5: 36.3 lb (16.5 kg)
    • PVA 7: 47.3 lb (21.5 kg)
    • PVA 8: 47.5 lb (21.6 kg)

Usage Features:

Input Connections:

The amplifiers feature single-ended RCA inputs for connecting to a preamplifier or surround sound processor. Users are cautioned against using "RCA-compatible" connectors with a hollow center pin and a hole at the tip, as this can cause internal damage to the amplifier's RCA jacks.

Speaker Connections:

Each channel has red (+) and black (-) binding posts for speaker connections. Users must ensure that power is turned off before connecting or disconnecting speakers to prevent electric shock and that speakers are rated appropriately for the amplifier's output to avoid fire hazards. The binding posts accept connections from one speaker per channel, and users are advised not to overtighten them.

On Modes (Rear Panel Switch):

The amplifier offers three operational modes, selectable via a three-way switch on the rear panel:

  1. Manual-On: The amplifier is turned on and off using the power button on the front panel. The front panel LED is blue when the amplifier is on.
  2. Trigger-On: This mode allows remote power control. A standard 3.5mm (.125") mono mini-plug cable connects the amplifier's INPUT trigger jack to an upstream component or system controller (accepts 5-24 volts, AC or DC). The trigger signal can be daisy-chained to other components via the OUTPUT trigger jack. In this mode, the front power button must be left in the 'on' position, and the front panel LED is red in standby and blue in operate mode.
  3. Auto-On: This feature automatically turns the amplifier on when it senses an input signal on any channel. It switches off 20 minutes after the input signal ceases. Similar to Trigger-On, the front power button must be left 'on', and the front panel LED indicates standby (red) or operate (blue) mode.

Thermal Shut-Off:

The amplifier is equipped with a thermal shut-off feature. If a channel overheats, it will remain off until the temperature drops below a safe threshold.

Maintenance Features:

Safety Precautions:

  • Risk of Electric Shock: The unit should not be opened by unauthorized personnel. Servicing must be referred to qualified service personnel.
  • Ventilation: Adequate ventilation is crucial to prevent overheating. The amplifier should not be placed on soft surfaces (bed, sofa, rug) or in enclosed spaces (bookcases, racks) without proper ventilation or a fan.
  • Cleaning: Unplug the product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Use a damp, soft cloth; avoid liquid or aerosol cleaners.
  • Power Cord Protection: Power-supply cords should be routed to prevent them from being walked on or pinched.
  • Lightning Protection: For added protection during lightning storms or extended periods of disuse, unplug the product from the wall outlet and disconnect antenna/cable systems.
  • Overloading: Avoid overloading wall outlets, extension cords, or integral convenience receptacles to prevent fire or electric shock.
  • Liquid and Object Entry: Never push objects into openings or expose the product to dripping or splashing liquids.

Servicing:

  • Users should not attempt to service the product themselves.
  • Servicing is required if the power-supply cord or plug is damaged, liquid has been spilled, objects have fallen into the product, the product has been exposed to rain or water, the product does not operate normally, has been dropped or damaged, or exhibits a distinct change in performance.
  • When replacement parts are required, only manufacturer-specified parts with the same characteristics as the original part should be used.
  • Upon completion of service or repairs, safety checks should be performed to ensure proper operating condition.

Environmental Guidelines (Europe):

The product complies with the European Union WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive. It contains regulated materials that require special reuse and recycling processing upon disposal. Paradigm Electronics Inc. (the manufacturer) has arranged with its distributors in EU member nations to collect and recycle the product at no cost to the user. Packaging materials should be recycled through normal channels.

Warranty:

Anthem products come with a limited warranty. For power amplifiers, the warranty period is five years from the date of purchase from an Authorized Anthem Dealer. The warranty is transferable only if the re-sold product is purchased from an Authorized Anthem Dealer. The warranty is void if the serial number is removed or defaced, if the product is operated outside its intended application, tampered with, modified, or damaged by accident, transport, power failure, or repaired by non-authorized parties. For warranty service, users must contact their Authorized Anthem Dealer or obtain a Return Authorization (RA) number from Anthem Technical Support before shipping the product. The product must be shipped prepaid, in original packaging, with a written description of the defect and a copy of the sales invoice.
