Overview

The AQUV Ultraviolet Disinfection System, by AQUA FLO, is a whole-house UV water disinfection and filtration system designed to provide safe drinking water by inactivating microorganisms without chemicals. It comes in two models: AQUV-12R2 and AQUV-20R2.

Function Description:

The system features a two-stage design. The first stage utilizes a five (5) micron sediment filter to reduce dirt, rust, sand, and other fine particulate matter from the water. The second stage is a UV system that employs germicidal ultraviolet light (at 254 nm wavelength) to instantly destroy pathogenic bacteria (such as coliform, E. coli, and viruses) in the water. This chemical-free process ensures continuous disinfection and ultimately safe water. UV systems are widely used as a primary disinfectant due to their natural, non-chemical, and environmentally safe nature, which does not produce harmful disinfection by-products.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: The system should be installed on the cold water line at the point of entry (POE) and must be in accordance with all local, state, or provincial regulations. A dedicated electrical circuit with a surge protector is recommended. The unit should not be mounted directly on drywall without appropriate reinforcement. It is crucial to ensure proper electrical grounding continuity.
  • Water Quality Requirements: For optimal performance, the feed water should meet specific criteria:
    • Turbidity/Suspended Solids: Ideally less than 1 NTU. A 5-micron sediment filter (or finer) is always required.
    • Hardness: Less than 7 GPG (120 mg/L) to prevent scale build-up on the quartz sleeve. A water softener is recommended for hard water.
    • Iron & Manganese: Iron less than 0.3 PPM (mg/L) and Manganese less than 0.05 mg/L to prevent build-up on the quartz dome. A suitable water conditioner may be needed.
    • Tannins and Colour: Water with tannins or color has low UV transmissivity, requiring a tannin-removal system for proper disinfection.
  • Disinfection Procedure: Before initial use or after power outages/shut-offs, all household plumbing lines must be disinfected using unscented household bleach. The system should be de-pressurized, bleach added to the filter housing, and then flushed through all hot and cold outlets until chlorine is smelled. The bleach solution should remain in the system for 6-8 hours, preferably overnight, before flushing thoroughly.
  • Ballast Features: The AQUA FLO AQUV advanced micro-processor controlled electronic UV ballast provides audio and visual alarm indicators for lamp operation and an annual lamp change reminder timer.
    • Normal Display: Shows days left before lamp expires (starts at 365, ends at 0).
    • Total Running Days: Pressing the button displays the total running days since installation (max 9999 days).
    • "LF" - Lamp Fault: Indicates a disconnected or defective lamp with a red LED and beeping every 2 seconds. Water should not be consumed until the lamp is replaced and the alarm cleared.
    • "A3" - Lamp Expiry: Indicates the lamp has expired with a red LED and beeping every 5 seconds. Water should not be consumed until the lamp is replaced.
    • "dEly" - Silence Alarm: Pressing and holding the button can silence the alarm for 7 days (up to 3 times).
    • "rSET" - Reset Timer: After replacing the UV lamp, the timer must be reset by pressing and holding the button for approximately 10 seconds until "rSET" is displayed, followed by a long beep.

Maintenance Features:

  • Continuous Operation: The UV system should operate continuously during normal use to supply safe water. Repeated ON/OFF cycles can shorten lamp and ballast life.
  • UV Lamp Replacement: The UV lamp MUST BE REPLACED ANNUALLY (when the display reaches "0" or "A3" alarm comes on), even if it still lights, as its disinfection ability diminishes. Only genuine AQUA FLO AQUV UV lamps should be used to maintain performance and warranty.
  • Quartz Dome Cleaning: The quartz dome should be cleaned at the time of lamp replacement (annually). More frequent cleaning may be necessary if water quality parameters (hardness, iron, manganese) are exceeded. Cleaning involves gently wiping with a vinegar solution or household scale-removal product; abrasive pads should not be used.
  • Pre-Filter Replacement: Pre-filters should be replaced every 4-6 months or when pressure across the unit drops by 10psi.
  • O-Ring Replacement: O-rings should be replaced annually. Food-grade silicone lubricant should be applied to O-rings.
  • Lamp and Quartz Dome Replacement Procedure:
    1. Unplug the UV unit and turn off the supply valve.
    2. Unscrew the ground nut and remove the ground wire.
    3. Loosen the screw on the lamp connector cover and remove the cover.
    4. Carefully slide the UV lamp out, disconnect the connector, and remove the lamp.
    5. Remove the quartz dome by loosening the gland nut and extracting it vertically to prevent breakage.
    6. Discard old dome O-ring and gland nut O-ring.
    7. Clean the quartz dome.
    8. Install new gland nut O-ring and dome O-ring.
    9. Reinstall the quartz dome, lamp spring, and UV lamp, ensuring proper orientation and connections.
    10. Connect the ground wire and tighten the nut.
    11. Connect the ballast power cable to the AC supply (with surge protector).
    12. Depress the timer button while reconnecting the ballast to reset the lamp-change-timer.
  • Filter Cartridge and O-Ring Replacement Procedure:
    1. Shut off the inlet valve and open a faucet to relieve pressure.
    2. Place a bucket under the sump.
    3. Unscrew the sump using the supplied wrench, discard the old cartridge, and rinse the sump.
    4. Remove and replace O-rings if they are a year old, or clean them and the groove. Apply food-grade silicone lube.
    5. Clean the inside of the head.
    6. Insert the new cartridge into the sump and hand-tighten the sump. Do not use a wrench to tighten the sump.
    7. Slowly open the water and flush for a few minutes.
  • Winterizing: Unplug the unit, drain the pre-filter by removing the sump, and drain the UV chamber by undoing the SS flex connector from the bottom. Reinstall components after drying. When restarting, plug in the ballast first, then slowly allow water into the unit, wait 10 minutes, and flush.
