Overview

The Aranet4 is a battery-powered CO2 meter designed for monitoring indoor air quality in various environments such as homes, schools, offices, and other private or public spaces. In addition to CO2 levels, it also measures temperature, relative humidity, and atmospheric pressure (the latter being accessible via the Aranet4 app).

Function Description

The core function of the Aranet4 is to provide real-time air quality data, specifically focusing on CO2 concentration. It utilizes a nondispersive infrared (NDIR) sensor for CO2 measurement. This sensor works by emitting infrared light into a chamber where CO2 gas absorbs a specific wavelength of this light. The amount of light that passes through the chamber is inversely proportional to the CO2 concentration: less light indicates higher CO2 levels. An optical filter ensures that only the relevant wavelength of light is measured.

The device features a power-efficient e-ink screen that displays the current measurements. The screen shows the temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit, relative humidity as a percentage, and CO2 concentration in parts per million (ppm). The CO2 level is visually indicated by a color-coded threshold bar: green for normal (below 1000 ppm), yellow for average (1000 to 1400 ppm), and red for unhealthy (above 1400 ppm).

The Aranet4 can provide visual and sound notifications if CO2 concentration reaches unhealthy levels. A speaker symbol on the screen indicates when the alarm function is active. These alarm settings, including adjustable CO2 thresholds, can be configured through the Aranet4 app.

Usage Features

The Aranet4 is designed for ease of use and provides several features to enhance the user experience:

  • Real-time Data Display: The e-ink screen continuously updates with current temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels.
  • Visual CO2 Indicator: The color-coded bar (green, yellow, red) offers an immediate visual cue about the air quality status.
  • Audible Alarms: When activated, the device can emit sound notifications if CO2 levels exceed predefined thresholds, alerting users to poor air quality.
  • Smartphone Connectivity (Aranet4 App): The device can be paired with a smartphone via Bluetooth (iOS or Android) using the Aranet4 app. This app allows users to:
    • Access a real-time overview of measurement data.
    • View up to seven days of historical measurement data, including atmospheric pressure.
    • Configure the Aranet4 device settings, such as CO2 thresholds and alarm frequency.
    • Perform CO2 calibration of the device.
    • Access available firmware updates.
    • Connect to multiple Aranet4 sensors to monitor their parameters from a single smart device.
    • Display readings on larger TV screens when connected to smart devices.
  • Aranet PRO Base Station Connectivity (PRO version only): The Aranet4 PRO version can connect wirelessly to an Aranet PRO base station. This base station can collect, store, and maintain data from up to 100 Aranet sensors, with a data storage capacity of up to 10 years. This feature is ideal for larger installations or professional monitoring.
  • Configuration Switches: The device has four small configuration switches located under the battery compartment cover. These switches allow users to adjust preferences such as:
    • CO2 Calibration Mode: Switch between manual and automatic CO2 calibration.
    • Temperature Units: Select between Celsius and Fahrenheit.
    • Bluetooth Connectivity: Enable or disable Bluetooth.
    • Aranet Radio Connectivity: Enable or disable connectivity to the Aranet PRO base station (for PRO versions). A pin tool is provided to adjust these switches.
  • Battery Operation: The Aranet4 is battery-powered, ensuring portability and flexible placement without needing a constant power outlet. The battery level is displayed on the screen.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the accuracy and longevity of the Aranet4 device:

  • CO2 Calibration: The device is factory-calibrated, but users can perform manual CO2 calibration when needed.
    • Manual Calibration: To initiate manual calibration, the device must be exposed to fresh air (around 420 ppm CO2) in a stable environment. This involves briefly changing the CO2 calibration mode switch from MANUAL to AUTO and back to MANUAL. The calibration progress is displayed on the screen. Manual calibration can also be performed via the Aranet4 app.
    • Automatic Calibration: In automatic calibration mode, the device requires exposure to fresh air (e.g., outdoors or a well-ventilated room) at least once a week to maintain accuracy.
  • Battery Replacement: The e-ink screen will display a battery exhausted symbol when the batteries need to be replaced.
  • Firmware Upgrades: The Aranet4 app provides access to available firmware updates, which can improve device performance and add new features. During a firmware upgrade, a warning message "DO NOT REMOVE BATTERIES! firmware upgrade IN PROGRESS" is displayed, emphasizing the importance of not removing batteries during this process.
  • Temperature Considerations: The device is designed to operate within a recommended temperature range of 0°C to 50°C (32°F to 122°F). An inverted screen alert or a "Temperature is below -9.9°C" message indicates temperatures that could damage the sensor due to frost.
  • Measurement History: While removing batteries erases the measurement history from the Aranet4's internal memory, the Aranet4 app stores up to seven days of historical data, providing a backup and longer-term overview. For PRO versions connected to an Aranet PRO base station, data can be stored for up to 10 years.
