Overview

The ARB Skydome Swag is a portable, self-standing canvas shelter designed for outdoor use, offering a comfortable and secure sleeping environment. It is manufactured to Australian Standards, incorporating specially treated canvas with a waxed thread for enhanced durability and waterproofing.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Skydome Swag is to provide a robust and weatherproof personal shelter for camping and outdoor adventures. It is designed for quick setup and takedown, offering protection from the elements while maintaining ventilation. The swag features a waterproof base and a canvas body, supported by an aluminium bow frame, creating a free-standing structure. It includes an integrated mattress for comfort and can be secured with pegs and guy ropes for stability in adverse weather.

Important Technical Specifications:

The swag's construction utilizes specially treated canvas and a PVC base, ensuring waterproofing. The frame consists of aluminium bows and rods: two long aluminium bows (head and hip), one short aluminium bow (foot), one long body rod, and one short leg rod. These components are designed to be inserted into canvas sleeves and eyelets, creating a tensioned, self-supporting structure. The overall dimensions and weight are not explicitly stated but are implied to be manageable for transport and setup by an individual.

Usage Features:

  • Setup:
    1. Site Selection: Place the swag on a flat surface, clear of sharp debris. While the base is fully waterproof, an optional tarpaulin or enviro-mat can be placed underneath for added protection.
    2. Unrolling: Unclip the webbing straps and unroll the swag.
    3. Component Retrieval: Locate the accessory bag and remove the aluminium bows, rods, and pegs.
    4. Bow Identification: Sort the aluminium bows: the two larger bows are for the head and hip, and the smaller bow is for the foot. The body rod is longer than the leg rod.
    5. Frame Assembly: Insert the bows one at a time through the canvas sleeve at the apex. Insert the ends of the bows into the small eyelet of the reinforced floor tabs. Care should be taken as the bows will be under tension.
    6. Rod Insertion: Insert the leg and body rods into the eyelets provided in the apex sleeves. The single Skydome offers multiple positions for the body rod, allowing adjustment for desired night sky vision.
    7. Canvas Clipping: Clip the canvas to the head, body, and foot bows. Once clipped, the Skydome swag becomes free-standing.
    8. Ventilation/Access: Open doors and storm flaps as needed for access and ventilation.
    9. Security: For security or in adverse weather, it is advisable to deploy guy ropes and peg the base to the ground.
  • Location & Use:
    • Site Selection: Choose a clear and flat site, avoiding hazards like falling branches, rising water, water ponding, and open flames.
    • Safety: Do not use or store combustion appliances (e.g., cookers, lanterns) inside the swag.
    • Condensation Management: Reduce condensation by improving ventilation. Condensation can still occur in some situations.
    • Orientation: Orient the swag according to weather conditions:
      • Position the side opening to the leeward side of the wind.
      • Close internal storm flaps to prevent dust ingress.
      • Close external door flaps to prevent water ingress.
      • Keep mesh closed to keep out insects.
      • Open external and internal flaps for improved ventilation in warm conditions.
      • Position the head flap windward for improved air circulation.
  • Supplied Parts:
    • 1 x Swag with mattress and guy ropes
    • 1 x Accessory bag containing:
      • 8 steel pegs
      • 2 long aluminium bows
      • 1 short aluminium bow
      • 1 long body rod
      • 1 short leg rod

Maintenance Features:

  • Preconditioning (Waterproofing):
    1. Set up the swag.
    2. Thoroughly soak the exterior canvas with water.
    3. Allow the canvas to dry completely.
    4. Repeat this process twice to ensure the seams are fully waterproof.
  • Cleaning:
    • Clean the canvas and PVC base with cold water and a soft bristle brush or sponge only.
    • DO NOT use soaps or detergents, as they can damage the protective coatings.
  • Mildew Prevention:
    • Always pack up the swag DRY.
    • Wipe the PVC base dry as you roll the swag.
    • Opening the storm flaps to increase ventilation helps reduce condensation and assists with drying.
    • Erecting the swag with increased ventilation also helps reduce condensation on the inner canvas surface.
  • General Care:
    • In windy conditions, ARB recommends pegging and guy roping the swag securely, even though it is free-standing.
    • DO NOT spray materials with insect/pesticide aerosol sprays or non-compatible water repellents.
    • DO NOT expose any part of the swag to petrol, oil, solvents, or similar substances.
    • When removing pegs, use a peg puller or another peg; DO NOT use the peg tab to assist with peg removal.
    • Store the swag in a dry place out of direct sunlight when not in use.
