Overview

The Astro Pneumatic Tool Company PT2-4 / PT2-4GH is a 2-1/4 gallon pressure tank designed for professional and amateur use, capable of providing pressurized material up to a maximum of 80 PSI. This tool is ideal for spraying large areas such as buses, trucks, or vans. The PT2-4 model includes the pressure tank itself, while the PT2-4GH model comes as an assembly with a spray gun and a 12-foot hose.

Function Description:

The pressure tank serves to deliver pressurized material through a fluid outlet, making it suitable for various spraying applications. It is equipped with an air regulator, a pressure gauge, and a safety valve to ensure controlled and safe operation. The 2-1/4 gallon capacity allows for handling a significant volume of material, and its sturdy construction is designed for durability. The PT2-4GH model further enhances functionality by including a pressure spray gun with its own pressure gauge and fluid pressure regulator, enabling accurate settings for spraying. The 12-foot twin hose set provided with the PT2-4GH facilitates easy movement and operation of the spray gun.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Product Type: 2-1/4 Gallon Pressure Tank
  • Nozzle Size (PT2-4GH): 1.0mm
  • Operation Pressure: 60 PSI (maximum tank pressure is 80 PSI)
  • Net Weight: 18-1/4 lbs. (8.28 kg)
  • Dimensions (W x D): 10" x 9-3/4"
  • Required Compressor: 3hp
  • Avg. Air Consumption: 11.3 cfm
  • Air Inlet Thread NPT: 1/4"
  • Capacity: 2-1/4 gallons (8517cc)

Usage Features:

The PT2-4 / PT2-4GH is designed for ease of use, but requires careful adherence to instructions for safety and optimal performance.

  • Material Preparation: Before use, materials should be mixed and strained through a fine mesh screen to prevent clogging.
  • Loading Material: To load material, all air pressure must be relieved from the tank by pulling the safety valve ring. The lid clamps and thumb screws are then loosened to remove the lid assembly, material is poured in, and the lid is securely reattached.
  • Air Supply Connection: The air supply line should ideally pass through an air transformer to filter dirt, water, and oil before connecting to the air inlet fitting on the tank regulator. The atomization air hose connects to the air outlet fitting, and the material hose connects to the fluid outlet fitting.
  • Pressure Adjustment: Once the air supply is on, the material pressure can be increased by turning the Tee-Handle adjusting screw clockwise on the tank regulator, and decreased by turning it counterclockwise. The maximum tank pressure must not exceed 80 PSI.
  • Spray Gun Adjustment (PT2-4GH): Atomization air for the spray gun can be adjusted at the gun using an air adjusting valve or by adding an air regulator kit to the tank. The spray gun operation should follow its accompanying instructions.
  • Safety Precautions: Always wear ANSI approved safety equipment, including safety glasses. The tool should only be used for its designed purpose, and no alterations or modifications should be made. The safety valve is crucial for preventing over-pressurization and must be checked for free operation before each use. Tampering with the air tank, such as drilling or welding, will weaken it and is strictly prohibited.

Maintenance Features:

Regular cleaning and proper maintenance are essential for the longevity and safe operation of the pressure tank.

  • Cleaning After Use:
    1. Turn off the main air supply to the tank.
    2. Relieve all pressure by pulling the safety valve ring.
    3. Turn the T-handle adjusting screw on the tank regulator counterclockwise until no spring tension is felt.
    4. Loosen thumb screws, tip clamps back, and tip the tank lid to one side.
    5. For the spray gun (PT2-4GH), loosen the air cap retaining ring about three turns.
    6. Turn on the air supply.
    7. Cup a cloth over the air cap on the gun and pull the trigger; this forces material back through the hose into the tank.
    8. Empty and clean the tank and all parts that came into contact with the material using a suitable solvent.
    9. Pour solvent into the tank.
    10. Replace the lid and tighten thumb screws and clamps.
    11. Spray until clean solvent appears.
    12. Repeat steps 4-7 as needed.
  • Safety Valve: Keep the safety valve clean at all times.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting chart for common issues:
    • Air escaping from port on regulator cap: Likely due to a broken or damaged diaphragm. Remedy: Replace diaphragm.
    • Pressure creep registered on gauge: Indicates a dirty or worn valve seat in the regulator. Remedy: Clean or replace valve seat.
    • Material settles out rapidly: Suggests insufficient agitation of material. Remedy: Increase agitation.
    • Fluid or air leak at lid gasket: Could be a defective lid gasket or loose thumb screw. Remedy: Replace gasket or tighten thumb screw.
    • Gauge Check: The gauge needle should return to zero when there is no pressure on the gauge.
  • Accessory Items:
    • Air Regulator Kit: For independent and accurate pressure control of both air and fluid, especially with portable air compressors or when other means of regulation are unavailable.
    • Air Adjusting Valve: Allows the operator to control and reduce air usage at the gun, ideal for low-pressure spraying.
    • Lid Gasket-Rubber: For use when sprayed materials are not compatible with the standard thiokol gasket.
    • Intake Strainer: Connects to the fluid inlet tube to prevent lumps and foreign matter from entering fluid lines.

The pressure tank is not designed for highly abrasive, corrosive, or rust-inducing materials. If such materials are used, frequent and thorough cleaning is advised to reduce the necessity for part replacement.
