Overview

The ASUS MX279 LCD Monitor is a widescreen display designed to provide a crisp, broad, and bright viewing experience with a host of features. It is intended for general use, including document editing, movie watching, gaming, and photo viewing.

Function Description

The monitor's primary function is to display video signals from connected devices such as computers, game consoles, DVD players, and other consumer video devices. It supports full HD video content (480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i/p) via HDMI.

The monitor features an On-Screen Display (OSD) menu that allows users to reconfigure various settings. The OSD menu is accessed by pressing the MENU button. Navigation through the menu and sub-menus is done using the directional buttons ( / and /▲), and selections are confirmed with the MENU button. Settings can be changed using the same directional buttons. To exit the OSD menu, the S button is pressed.

A key feature of the monitor is the SPLENDID™ Video Intelligence Technology, which offers six video preset modes: Scenery Mode, Standard Mode, Theater Mode, Game Mode, Night View Mode, and sRGB. These modes are accessible via a hotkey (S/A button) and are designed to optimize the display for different content types. Each mode includes a Reset option to revert to preset settings. In Standard Mode, Saturation, Skin Tone, Sharpness, and ASCR functions are not user-configurable. Similarly, in sRGB mode, Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Color Temp., Skin Tone, Sharpness, and ASCR functions are not user-configurable.

The monitor also includes a QuickFit function, which allows users to preview document or photo layouts directly on screen without needing to print test copies. This function offers three patterns: Grid pattern, Paper size (A4 and Letter), and Photo size (4x6, 3x5, 2x2, 8x10, 5x7). QuickFit is activated by repeatedly pressing its dedicated hotkey. When active, control buttons can be used for adjustments, with an OSD in the lower right corner guiding selections.

Connectivity options include two HDMI ports for HDMI-compatible devices, a VGA port for PC VGA connections, an Audio-in port for PC audio sources, and an earphone jack for connecting earphones. There is also a DC-in port for the power adapter and a Kensington Lock slot for security. The Input Select button allows users to choose the desired input source when multiple video cables are connected.

Usage Features

The monitor is designed for ease of use and offers several features to enhance the viewing experience:

  • Adjustable Viewing Angle: The monitor's angle can be adjusted from -5° to +20° to achieve the most comfortable viewing position. Users should hold the stand to prevent the monitor from falling when adjusting the angle.
  • Power Management: The monitor has a power button/indicator. A white light indicates the monitor is ON, while an amber light signifies standby mode. The monitor automatically enters sleep/standby mode if there is no signal input for 10 seconds, contributing to power saving.
  • OSD Menu Functions:
    • Color Settings: Users can adjust Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Color Temp. (Cool, Normal, Warm, User Mode), and Skin Tone (Reddish, Natural, Yellowish). The /▲ button also serves as a hotkey for Brightness adjustment. In User Mode, R, G, and B colors are individually configurable.
    • Image Settings: This menu allows adjustments for Sharpness, Trace Free (response time), Aspect Control (Full, 4:3, Over Scan for HDMI), ASCR (ASUS Smart Contrast Ratio, available in specific Splendid modes), Position (H-Position and V-Position for VGA input), and Focus (Phase and Clock for VGA input) to reduce noise.
    • Input Select: Users can manually select between VGA, HDMI1, or HDMI2 input sources.
    • System Setup: This comprehensive menu includes:
      • Splendid Demo Mode: Splits the screen into two for a side-by-side comparison of Splendid modes (available in specific Splendid modes).
      • Volume: Adjusts the earphone output volume.
      • ECO Mode: Activates power-saving mode, though this may affect brightness and gray level distinction.
      • OSD Setup: Configures OSD display properties such as H-Position, V-Position, OSD Timeout, DDD/CI, and Transparency.
      • Language: Supports 21 languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese.
      • Information: Displays monitor details like Input Port, Resolution, H-freq., V-freq., and Model Name.
      • All Reset: Reverts all settings to factory defaults.
  • Audio Features: The monitor has built-in speakers and an earphone jack. The volume can be adjusted via the OSD menu or a dedicated hotkey.

Maintenance Features

Proper care and maintenance are essential for the longevity and optimal performance of the monitor:

  • Cleaning: Before cleaning, turn off the monitor and unplug the power cord. The monitor surface should be cleaned with a lint-free, non-abrasive cloth. Stubborn stains can be removed with a cloth dampened with a mild cleaner. Avoid cleaners containing alcohol or acetone, and never spray cleaner directly on the screen to prevent internal damage or electric shock.
  • Handling: When lifting or repositioning the monitor, disconnect all cables and the power cord. Always grasp the edges of the monitor, not the stand or the cord.
  • Ventilation: The monitor cabinet has slots and openings for ventilation. These should not be blocked. The product should not be placed near radiators or heat sources without proper ventilation.
  • Power Supply: The monitor should only be operated from the specified power source indicated on the label. Use the appropriate power plug for your local standard and avoid overloading power strips or extension cords to prevent fire or electric shock.
  • Environmental Protection: Avoid dust, humidity, and extreme temperatures. Do not place the monitor in areas where it might get wet, and ensure it is placed on a stable surface.
  • Lightning Storms/Extended Absence: Unplug the unit during lightning storms or if it will not be used for a long period to protect it from power surges.
  • Foreign Objects: Never push objects or spill liquid into the monitor cabinet slots.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues such as the power LED not turning on, no screen image, image quality problems (too light/dark, not centered, blurry, color defects), or audio issues. Solutions often involve checking cable connections, adjusting OSD settings, or moving electrical devices causing interference.
  • Service: Do not attempt to open the monitor cabinet or repair the power supply yourself, as this can result in serious physical injury. If technical problems arise, contact a qualified service technician or your retailer. The warranty may be voided if the product is repaired, modified, or altered without written authorization from ASUS, or if the serial number is defaced or missing.
  • Recycling: ASUS offers recycling and takeback programs for products, batteries, components, and packaging materials, reflecting a commitment to environmental protection. Information on these services is available on the ASUS website.
