Emergency situations
General
This chapter is intended for trained emer-
gency crews and working personnel who
have the necessary tools and equipment to
perform these operations.
Starting by pushing or
towing
Q;) Note
Vehicles with an automati c transmission
cannot be started by pushing or towing .
Starting with jumper
cables
Jumper cable: Note the manufacturer's infor-
mation.
If t he battery is discha rged, another vehicle
can provide starting assistance. For this you
require a jumper cab le. Both batteries must
have the same voltage (V) and a similar ca-
pacity (Ah).
Jumper cables
Use only jumper cab les of sufficiently
largecross section to safely carry the sta rter
current. Refer to the manufacturer 's specifica -
tions.
Use only jumper cables with
isolated termina l
clamps and properly marke d for distinction :
plus(+) cable in most cases colo red red
minu s( -) cable
in most cases colo red black.
The wire cross section must be at least
0.038 in
2
(25 mm
2
)
for gasoline eng ines and
at least 0.054 in
2
(35 mm
2
)
for diese l en-
gines .
A WARNING
Batte ries contain electricity, acid, and gas .
Any of th ese can cause very ser ious or fatal
injury. Follow the instructions below for
safe handling of your vehicle's battery.
- Always shie ld your eyes and avoid lean-
ing over the battery wheneve r poss ible.
- A discharged battery can already freeze
at temperatures just below 32 °F (0 °() .
Never attempt to provide start ing ass is-
tance on a frozen or thawed out batte ry -
Danger of explosion and chemical burns!
Replace a battery if it has bee n froze n.
- Do not allow battery acid to contact eyes
or skin . Flush any contacted area with
water immediat ely.
- Imp rope r use of a booster battery to
start a vehicle may cause an explosion .
- Vehicle batter ies ge nerate explosive gas-
es. Keep spar ks, flame and lighted ciga-
rettes away from batteries.
- Do not try to ju mp start any vehicle wit h
a low acid leve l in the battery .
- The voltage of the booste r batte ry must
also have a 12-Volt rat ing. The capacity
(Ah) of the booste r battery sho uld not be
lower than that of the discharged bat-
tery. Use of batte ries of diffe ren t voltage
or subs tantially diffe rent "Ah" rat ing
may cause an explosion and person al in-
jury .
- Never charge a frozen battery. Gas trap-
ped in the ice may cause an explosion .
- Never charge or use a batt ery that has
been frozen . The battery case may have
be weake ned.
- Use of batt eries of differe nt volta ge or
subs tanti ally different capacity (Ah) rat -
ing may cause an explosion and injury.
The capacity (Ah) of the booster battery
should not be lower than that of the dis-
charged batte ry.
- Before you check anythin g in the engine
compa rtment, always read and heed all
