Coolant loss
Coolan t loss may ind icate a leak in t he cooling system . In t he even t of
coo la nt loss, t he coo ling syst em sho uld be ins pected imm ed iately by
your aut horized Audi dea le r.
It is not eno ugh mere ly to ad d coolant .
In a
sealed syste m, losses can occur on ly if t he bo iling po int of th e
coo lant is exceeded as a res ult of ove rheating .
& WARNING
• The cooling system is under pressure. Do not open the cap of
the coolant expansion tank when the engine is hot. You ris k being
scalded .
• The coolant additive, and therefore the coolant itself, is
hazardous to health. Keep the coolant additive in the original
container out of the reach of children. It is a poison hazard .

Do not add any ty pe of radiato r lea k sealan t to your vehicle 's eng ine
coo lant. Adding radiator repa ir fluid may adverse ly affect the func-

Adding coolant
Befo re you check anyt hing in the engi ne com partme nt ,
always read and heed all WARNINGS =:> & in "Work ing in
th e eng ine compa rt ment" on
page 183.
- Add coolant.
- Twist the cap on again
tightly .
Rep lacement eng ine coolant must conform to exact spec ifications
=> page 189, "Coolan t ". If t he coolan t add it ive G12 ++ is not availa ble
in an emergency, you must not add any ot her additive. In this case,

coo lant ad d it ive as soon as possible.
Always use
new engine coo la nt w hen refi lling.
Do not f ill coolant above the "MAX" ma rk. Excess coolant will be
for ce d ou t t hr ough th e pr es sur e re lief valve in t he ca p when the
eng ine becomes hot.
With a major loss of coolant, you should add t he coolant on ly whe n
the engine has
cooled . In this way you prevent eng ine damage.
& WARNING
• The cooling system is under pressure and can get very hot.
Reduce the ris k of scalding from hot coolant by following these
steps.
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down .
- Protect your face, hands and arms from escaping fluid and
steam by covering the cap with a large, thick rag.
- Turn the cap slowly and very carefully in a counter-clockwise
direction while applying light, downward pressure on the top
of the cap.
- To avoid being burned, do not spill antifreeze or coolant on
the exhaust system or hot engine parts. Under certain condi-
tions , the ethylene glycol in engine coolant can catch fire .
• Antifreeze is poisonous. Always store antifreeze in its original
container and well out of the reach of children.
• If you drain the coolant , it must be caught and safely stored in
a proper container clearly marked "poison ".
