Overview

The Austere Power Series Surge Suppressor is a power surge protection device designed for indoor use in cool, dry locations. It is available in three models: 3S-PS4-US1, 5S-PS4-US1, and 7S-PS4-US1, which are referred to as III Series, V Series, and VII Series respectively.

Function Description

The primary function of this device is to protect electronic equipment from power surges and spikes. It provides multiple AC outlets and USB charging ports, allowing users to power and charge various devices simultaneously. The surge protector incorporates internal protection that disconnects the surge protective component at the end of its useful life, while maintaining mains power to the connected devices, albeit without surge protection.

Usage Features

  • Recommended Use: Ideal for home theater equipment, gaming systems, home office equipment, and portable electronic devices.
  • Installation:
    • Wall Mountable: The 4-outlet power models are wall mountable.
    • Security Screw (Optional): For outlets with a center screw (e.g., standard outlets), the device can be secured by removing the existing center screw from the outlet cover, opening a removable flap on the front of the Austere Power unit, and using the included silver screw to fasten the unit to the outlet cover before plugging it in and repositioning the flap.
    • Decora Outlets: For outlets without a center screw (e.g., Decora outlets), simply open the removable cover on the front of the unit and remove the screw.
  • Power Connection: Must be plugged into a standard, 3-wire grounded 120V AC, 60Hz outlet.
  • Power On/Off: Features a power switch/reset button to turn the unit ON and OFF.
  • LED Status Indicators: Three LED lights provide real-time status:
    • Power LED (Blue): Indicates the surge protector is plugged in and receiving power.
    • Ground LED (Blue): Indicates the unit is plugged into a properly grounded circuit. If this LED does not illuminate, it suggests a wiring issue with the AC outlet.
    • Protected LED (Blue): Indicates that the surge suppression components are intact and providing full protection. If this LED no longer illuminates, the unit needs replacement.
  • SmartFit Outlets: All Austere power products feature expansive SmartFit outlets designed to accommodate larger equipment transformers without obstructing adjacent outlets.
  • Circuit Breaker: An internal circuit breaker protects against overload. If the total equipment load exceeds 15 amps, the breaker will trip, and the outlets will stop providing power. To reset, reduce the load by unplugging devices and then cycle the power button.
  • Daisy Chaining: Explicitly states "DO NOT 'daisy chain' surge protectors."
  • Extension Cords: Explicitly states "DO NOT plug into another relocatable power tap" and "you should NOT plug in extension cords directly into the power unit."
  • Aquarium Equipment: Explicitly states "DO NOT use with any aquarium equipment."
  • Medical/Life Support: Not intended for use with medical equipment or life support devices, or in the presence of flammable anesthetic mixtures.

Maintenance Features

  • Replacement Recommendation: The device features internal protection that will disconnect the surge protective component at the end of its useful life. It is recommended to replace the unit every 5 years.
  • Protected LED as Indicator: When the Protected LED no longer illuminates, it signifies that the surge suppression components are no longer functional, and the unit must be replaced to ensure continued protection against surges and spikes.
  • Ground LED as Indicator: If the Ground LED does not illuminate, it indicates a potential issue with the electrical wiring of the AC outlet, recommending inspection by a licensed electrician.
  • No User-Serviceable Parts: Users are advised not to drill into or open the housing for any reason, as there are no user-serviceable parts inside.
  • Product Registration: Users are encouraged to register their product at www.austere.com/guarantee to activate the lifetime guarantee.
