Overview

This document is an installation and maintenance guide for TimberTech decking products, including TimberTech PRO®, TimberTech EDGE®, TwinFinish®, ReliaBoard®, and DockSider® collections. It provides comprehensive instructions and recommendations for proper installation, care, and maintenance to ensure the longevity and aesthetic appeal of the decking.

Function Description:

The TimberTech decking system is designed to provide a durable, low-maintenance, and aesthetically pleasing outdoor walking surface that mimics the look of real wood. It is intended for use in various outdoor applications, including elevated decks, picture frame installations, and diagonal layouts. The guide covers the installation of both square shouldered and grooved boards, as well as fascia and riser boards. It also details specific fastening methods, including hidden fastener systems like CONCEALoc® and Cortex®, to achieve a clean, fastener-free surface. The guide emphasizes proper ventilation, gapping, and substructure requirements to ensure structural integrity and minimize expansion/contraction issues.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Board Installation: TimberTech deck boards are one-sided products, with the embossed (grain) side up for the walking surface. Fascia boards are also one-sided, installed grain side out.
  • Joist Spacing:
    • Basic Installation: Maximum 16" on center (12" on center for commercial applications).
    • Picture Frame Installation: Maximum 16" on center, with additional support for the picture frame structure (12" on center for commercial applications).
    • Diagonal Installation: Maximum 12" on center (more severe angles may require closer spacing).
    • Solid wood blocking between joists, placed every 4' - 6', is recommended to reduce movement and twisting.
  • Maximum Joist Spacing (TwinFinish):
    • 100psf: 20" (90° Angle), 18" (30° Angle), 16" (45° Angle).
  • Maximum Joist Spacing (TimberTech PRO, TimberTech EDGE, and Reliaboard):

    • Gap where boarding meets adjoining structure or post: Minimum 3/16".
    • Butt Joint Gapping:
      • 32°F and below: 3/16" gap.
      • 33°F to 74°F: 1/8" gap.
      • 75°F and above: 1/32" gap.
  • Cantilevering:
    • TimberTech PRO, TimberTech EDGE, TwinFinish, Reliaboard, and DockSider: Maximum 1".
    • Scalloped, PRO Terrain, EDGE Prime, and Reliaboard: Only on the ends.
  • Fasteners:
    • Square Shouldered Boards: TimberTech Cortex or TOPLoc are recommended. Pre-drilling is required within 1-1/2" of board ends and for temperatures below 45°F. Minimum #8 x 2-1/2" stainless steel or high-quality coated composite deck screws are alternatives.
    • CONCEALoc Hidden Fasteners: Designed for grooved boards. Includes stainless steel clips and screws.
    • Cortex Hidden Fastening System: Requires pre-drilling with a 7/32" drill bit and use of a Cortex Setting Tool. Fasteners should be installed perpendicular to the deck surface and driven flush. No fasteners closer than 3/4" from the end or edge of the board.
  • Stair Stringer Spacing Chart (Maximum Spacing):
    • Prime & Prime+: 16" (when used as veneer).
    • Premier: 9".
    • DockSider: 21".
    • TwinFinish: 12".
    • Legacy: 10" (where available).
    • Reserve: 10" (where available).
    • ReliaBoard: 9".
    • Terrain: 16" (when used as veneer).
  • Routing: Should NOT be routed, except for a 2" wide groove in solid boards for CONCEALoc start/stop.
  • Notching: Deck boards must be handled carefully and fully supported under the notched area.
  • Warranty:
    • TimberTech PRO, TwinFinish, Reliaboard, and DockSider: 30-year limited residential, 10-year commercial.
    • TimberTech PRO: 30-year residential fade and stain.
    • TimberTech EDGE: 25-year limited residential, 10-year commercial.
    • TimberTech EDGE: 25-year residential fade and stain.

Usage Features:

  • Tools Required: Cordless driver, chalk line, tape measure, jigsaw, carpenter square, spacing tools, circular saw, safety glasses, drill bits. A power miter saw with a fine finish alternate top bevel blade is also recommended.
  • Safety: Always wear proper clothing and safety equipment, especially safety glasses during installation. TimberTech products are splinter-free.
  • Color and Grain Patterns: Decking is designed to mimic real wood, with slight variations in color and grain pattern. TwinFinish, ReliaBoard, and DockSider will naturally weather over time to a more consistent color within the first year.
  • Extreme Heat Warning: Be aware of excessive heat from external sources (e.g., fire, reflection from Low-E glass) which can cause melting, sagging, warping, discoloration, or accelerated weathering.
  • Color and Temperature: Darker decking colors will feel hotter in the sun.
  • Excessive Construction Debris: Keep the deck surface clear of dirt, sand, dust, and masonry products to prevent damage and difficult cleaning.
  • Calculating Material Requirements: Calculate square footage (Length x Width), then divide by 5.5 (12' boards), 7.3 (16' boards), or 9.1 (20' boards). Add 10% for scrap factor.
  • Expansion and Contraction: Boards will expand and contract with temperature changes. Fasten boards as soon as possible after cutting to minimize movement.
  • Fascia and Riser Boards: Use TOPLoc Fascia Fasteners, pre-drilling 2" from top and bottom, alternating a maximum of 12". Screws should be flush with the surface, not completely torqued down, to allow for expansion/contraction.
  • Hidden Fastener Installation:
    • CONCEALoc: Fully insert fastener into grooved edge, aligning screw hole with joist center. Install provided screw at 45° angle through the fastener and into the joist.
    • Cortex: Pre-drill with 7/32" bit, drive screws with setting tool at medium/high speed until it disengages, install two screws per joist, maximum 16" on center between rows. Place plug into cored hole and gently tap flush.
  • Butt Joints: Must be doubled up for proper fastener attachment. Shift clips approximately 1/4" to the right of center on the butt joist.
  • Diagonal Installation: Offset the center 1/2" towards the long point of the joist.
  • Replacing a Board: Cut two parallel cuts down the center of the board, remove remaining pieces, position new board, and secure.
  • Grooving Square Shouldered Boards: Create a 2" long groove on the edge of the board at every joist, 1/4" wide and 3/8" deep. Use TimberTech's CONCEALoc Groove Cutting Router Bit.

Maintenance Features:

  • Storage: Store products under cover, flat, and dry, with banding and bottom supports aligned.
  • Handling: Carry boards on edge, especially 20' boards with two persons. Do not slide boards against each other or drag tools/equipment across the surface.
  • Brushes: Use Quickie® Professional Pool and Deck Scrub or a medium plastic bristle deck brush. DO NOT use natural fiber brushes on capped composites.
  • Cleaner (PRO/EDGE): For general cleaning, use mild liquid soap and water (Dawn Ultra®). For difficult dirt, use TimberTech DeckCleaner™ or all-purpose cleaners like Chomp® Pro Gutter Cleaner or Zep® Fast 505. Avoid composite deck cleaners specified as powder or liquid forms (e.g., Corte Clean®, Thompson's® Water Seal® Oxy Action, Olympic® Deck Cleaner) on PRO/EDGE boards.
  • Cleaner (TwinFinish/ReliaBoard/DockSider): Use Wash Safe Spray and Clean Composite Deck Cleaner, Resist Mist Composite Deck Cleaner, Corte Clean, Super Deck Composite Deck Cleaner, or Thompson's Water Seal – Oxy Action.
  • Cleaning Procedures: Work in small areas, avoid direct sunlight. Saturate with cleaner for 30-60 seconds (do not allow to dry). Scrub with recommended brush in and against the grain. Rinse thoroughly with clean water (do not allow cleaner to dry).
  • Power Washing: Can be used with a maximum pressure of 1500 psi. Use a fan tip nozzle and spray in the direction of the brush/grain pattern.
  • Dirt, Grime, Tannin, Mildew Stains: Rinse periodically with a hose. Maintain a clean, dry surface. Tannin staining (Extractive Bleeding) may occur on wood-plastic composites and will weather away over 8-10 weeks.
  • Static Electricity: Naturally occurring phenomenon in plastic-based products.
  • Snow & Ice Removal: Decking may become slippery. Products containing calcium chloride can be used. Avoid metal shovels or plastic shovels with a metal leading edge.
  • Important Maintenance Notes: Do not allow airborne dust from concrete, landscape blocks, or masonry products to accumulate. Do not cut any product on or near decking. Remove all construction dirt and debris immediately.
