Do you have a question about the B2 Audio RIOT16000 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The B2 Audio RIOT16000 is a full-bridge Class D amplifier designed for high-performance car audio systems, emphasizing both power and sound quality. It is part of the "RIOT" series, which aims to deliver superior performance and power in a compact size suitable for various vehicles.

Function Description:

The RIOT16000 serves as a powerful amplifier for loudspeakers and subwoofers in an automotive environment. It takes a low-level audio signal (RCA input) and amplifies it to drive speakers with significant power. The amplifier is designed to make a strong statement in terms of performance, pushing beyond standard expectations in car audio. Its full-bridge design means it is internally bridged and cannot be externally strapped or bridged with other amplifiers.

    • 2 Ω: 12500 W
    • 1 Ω: 16000 W

Important Notes on Specifications:

  • The amplifier is not stable below 1 ohm impedance. Operation below minimum impedance will stress the amplifier and void the warranty, leading to excessive heat and thermal protection.
  • To achieve full power output, a correctly dimensioned electrical system is crucial.
  • All features are subject to change in the continuing effort to improve the products without notice.

Usage Features:

  • Panel Layout: The amplifier features a comprehensive panel layout for easy configuration.

    • Input (RCA): Requires a minimum 0.2V input signal for correct operation.
    • Output (RCA): Provides a signal output diverted from the amplifier's RCA input, useful for chaining other audio devices.
    • Crossover High (12 dB/Oct): Variable high pass crossover from 10 Hz to 500 Hz. Recommended to set according to loudspeaker enclosure/T/S parameters to prevent strain on the sound system.
    • Crossover Low (12 dB/Oct): Adjusts the cut-off point for the low pass crossover at the chosen frequency. Can be used simultaneously with Crossover High to create a bandpass crossover.
    • Gain (5V - 0.2V): Adjusts the input voltage to match the amplifier's input stage. Voltages outside the 0.2V-5V range may cause errors or damage.
    • Bass Boost Level: Control for 0-12 dB bass boost.
    • Bass Boost Freq: Variable bass boost frequency from 35 Hz to 70 Hz. Not activated if level selector is set at 0 dB.
    • Remote Level Control Port: Connects to an external signal level control with a clip indicator. This is not a volume knob and should be adjusted in accordance with the amplifier's gain.
    • LED Status:
      • Power lit: Normal operation.
      • Clip lit or flashing: Signal input is not clean, and distortion is detected.
      • Protect: Amplifier has shut down due to improper application, malfunction, or circuit damage.
    • Speaker Output: Connects to loudspeakers and/or subwoofers. Minimum impedance is 1 OHM. The RIOT16000 is a full-bridge amplifier and is internally bridged; it cannot be strapped or bridged externally.
  • Power Terminals:

    • GND (Ground Connection): Connects to the vehicle's chassis. Must be as short as possible (< 20" / 50 cm) using a minimum 0AWG cable.
    • OUT (Remote Output): Switched remote output for additional devices like other amplifiers or signal processors.
    • +12V (Power Connection): Connects to the positive terminal of the battery. Requires 0AWG cable for specified performance. Fuses must be placed within 8" / 20 cm of the battery.
    • REM (Remote Input): Switched remote input connection.

Maintenance Features:

  • Installation Considerations:

    • Preparation: Disconnect the negative battery cable before any mounting or connections. Check battery and alternator ground connections for proper dimensioning and absence of corrosion.
    • Mounting Location: Choose a dry, well-ventilated location that allows for vertical positioning of heatsink fins to avoid excessive heat. Avoid areas with excessive vibration or upside-down installation. Ensure no cables or harnesses interfere with the mounting location or pose a hazard to vehicle components (fuel lines, hydraulic lines, etc.).
    • Cable Routing: Route RCA cables away from high current wires, and ideally run RCA, power, and speaker cables individually with good distance from each other.
    • Power Connectors: All terminals (0 AWG power & ground) must be used with adequate cable. External fuses are required at both the battery and the amplifier ends of the power cable.
    • Grounding: Locate a secure grounding connection as close as possible to the amplifier, ensuring it's clean and provides a direct electrical connection to the chassis. The ground cable should be as short as possible, no longer than 20" / 50 cm.
    • Speaker Connection: Use minimum 10 Ga speaker cables for optimal performance. Route speaker cables separately from high current and RCA cables. Use grommets where cables penetrate the vehicle's chassis. Strip 3/8" / 1 cm of insulation, twist strands tightly, and use spade plugs or solder for solid terminals.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The amplifier's protection circuits prevent severe damage from faulty conditions. If the protection indicator switches on, turn down all levels, power off, and check for:

    • Amplifier Doesn't Turn On: Check +12V terminal voltage, remote terminal voltage (min. 13.8V DC), ground connection, and in-line fuses. Ensure protection LED is off.
    • Protection LED Is Lit Once Amplifier Is Turned On: Check for shorts on speaker wires, connected load/impedance, power cables, and GND. Disconnect speaker cables and reset the amplifier. Verify operational voltage is within 9V-16V.
    • Fuse Blowing: Measure speaker impedance (ensure it matches configuration) and inspect power cable for shorts with vehicle chassis.
    • Overheating: Measure speaker impedance (ensure it matches configuration), check speaker shorts, and ensure sufficient airflow around the amplifier. Avoid installation in areas of excessive vibration or upside down.
    • Audio Output Insufficient - Distorted Sound: Match gain settings with head unit output level, adjust head unit volume, check speaker shorts, adjust crossover frequencies, and check RCA connections.
    • Turn On Thump: Disconnect signal input, then turn on/off. If noise cancels, connect a delay turn-on module on the REM wire or use another 12V source for the REM lead with a relay to isolate the amplifier.
    • High Hiss - Engine Noise in Speakers: Ensure signal wires (RCA, speaker) are separate from power/ground wires. Bypass electrical components between head unit and amplifier. Remove existing ground wires for all electrical components and ensure ground point is 100% metal, free of rust/paint. Replace OEM battery/alternator ground cable. Test battery and alternator load and ensure vehicle's electrical system (distributor, alternator, spark plugs/wires, voltage regulators) is in good condition.
  • Limited Warranty Information:

    • 1-year warranty for defects in material & workmanship under normal use when installed by an authorized dealer.
    • 30-day warranty for items not installed by authorized dealers.
    • Original sales receipts required for all returns.
    • Warranty applies to the original purchaser and products sold by authorized B2 Audio dealers.
    • Warranty does not cover: Damage from accident, abuse, misuse, improper operation, water/solvents, shipping, product modification, neglect, failure to follow installation instructions, misrepresentation by seller, products used for competition, opened products, products with defaced/altered/removed serial numbers, and shipping costs for repair/return of non-defective items.
