C00169 Hand Tool
Operating
Instructions
1. Band may be used from bulk roll as
this completely eliminates waste of
band. Slide buckle on band as shown,
bringing end of band around object to
be clamped and again through buckle.
NOTE: The tension screw thread
should be lubricated regularly.
2. Continue band around object once
more and again through buckle.
Double banding develops a great deal
more radial compression than single
banding. Bend end of band under
buckle.
4. Place finger on BAND-IT Band at
buckle bridge while tensioning with tool
handle. When you feel BAND-IT Band
stop moving through buckle as you are
turning handle, maximum pressure is
being exerted by the BAND-IT Band
around object being clamped. Stop
turning handle.
5. Roll tool over buckle, backing off
with tension handle throughout entire
rolling operation. Failure to back off
with tension handle through-out entire
course of roll-over may result in
breaking of band. There is no loss of
tension as band released is used up in
the bend.
6. Pull cutting handle to cut the band.
7. Remove tool,
holding stub of band
down with thumb.
3. Place band in opening of tool nose
and gripper block. Move into slot as far
as possible, to avoid buckle sliding into
tool nose. Tighten band clamp by
turning the tension handle clockwise
while holding band gripper tight against
band. NOTE: The spring load of the
band gripper is not intended to secure
and prevent band from slipping during
tension process.

Overview

The BAND-IT C00169 Hand Tool is a robust device designed for applying stainless steel bands and buckles to secure objects, offering a versatile solution for various clamping needs. Its primary function is to tension and cut BAND-IT stainless steel banding, creating strong, durable clamps.

Function Description:

The tool facilitates the creation of secure clamps by allowing users to tension and cut BAND-IT banding. The process begins by feeding the band from a bulk roll, eliminating waste, and threading it through a buckle. The band is then wrapped around the object to be clamped, and the free end is fed back through the buckle. For enhanced strength, double banding is possible, significantly increasing radial compression. The tool's nose and gripper block secure the band, preventing slippage during tensioning. Tension is applied by turning a handle clockwise, and a unique "roll-over" mechanism is used to finalize the clamp. This mechanism involves rolling the tool over the buckle while backing off the tension handle, which ensures the band is used up in the bend without losing tension. Finally, the cutting handle severs the band, and the buckle ears are hammered down to secure the band stub, completing the clamp.

Important Technical Specifications:

While specific numerical technical specifications like maximum tension force or band width compatibility are not explicitly detailed in the provided pages, the manual implies the tool's capability to handle standard BAND-IT stainless steel banding. The design suggests it's built for durability and repeated use in demanding environments. The tool's components, such as the tension screw, gripper block, and cutter bar, are designed for precision and longevity. The use of locking compounds (Loctite 242 or equivalent) for threaded connections indicates a focus on maintaining structural integrity and preventing loosening under stress.

Usage Features:

  • Waste Reduction: The ability to use band directly from a bulk roll minimizes material waste, making it an economical choice.
  • Single and Double Banding: The tool supports both single and double banding configurations. Double banding is recommended for applications requiring a higher degree of radial compression and increased security.
  • Ergonomic Design: The tension handle and cutting handle are designed for ease of use, though the manual doesn't explicitly state ergonomic features, the visual representation suggests a practical design.
  • Precision Tensioning: The tensioning mechanism allows for controlled application of force, ensuring the band is tightened to the desired level. The "finger on the buckle bridge" technique helps users identify when maximum pressure is achieved.
  • Integrated Cutting: A dedicated cutting handle is incorporated into the tool, allowing for a clean and efficient cut of the band once tensioned.
  • Versatility with Accessories: The tool can be adapted for specific applications with accessories like JR Adapters for preformed clamps and the C04388 Close Quarter Tension Nut for use in confined spaces.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Lubrication: The tension screw thread requires regular lubrication to ensure smooth operation and prevent wear.
  • Gripper Cleaning: The gripper block, which holds the band during tensioning, can accumulate foreign matter. The manual provides detailed instructions for removing the gripper, cleaning its teeth with a wire brush, and reassembling it. This is crucial for maintaining effective grip and preventing band slippage.
  • Repair Parts Availability: A comprehensive list of repair kits is provided, allowing users to replace worn or damaged components rather than the entire tool. These kits include:
    • C02499 Slide Block Assembly: Includes slide block, pin, band gripper, spring, and tension screw.
    • C06799 Slide Block Assembly: Includes gripper, slide block, tension screw, pin, and gripper spring.
    • C05887 Cutter Bar Assembly: Includes cutter bar handle, vinyl grip, set screw, and cutter bar.
    • C00689 Tension Handle, Bearing and Screw: This kit is recommended to be changed as a set to reduce accelerated wear.
  • Component Replacement Guidelines: The manual offers specific instructions for replacing parts, including the use of heat to remove threaded components, cleaning threads, and applying medium-strength locking compound (Loctite 242 or equivalent) and food-grade white lubricant during reassembly.
  • Preventive Maintenance Kits: Kits like C01899 (Band Gripper, Gripper Spring, Groove Lock Pin) and C02499 (Slide Block, Groove Lock Pin, Band Gripper, Gripper Spring, Tension Screw) are designed to replace multiple related parts as a set, maximizing tool performance and extending its lifespan. Periodic cleaning of band gripper teeth is emphasized for improved performance.
  • Warranty Information: Users are directed to the BAND-IT-IDEX website for detailed warranty information, indicating manufacturer support for the product.
