The BAND-IT GRC001 Hand Tool is a clamping device designed for applying BAND-IT bands and buckles to various objects, creating secure and robust clamps. It is a versatile tool suitable for both single and double banding applications, offering significant radial compression.
The primary function of the GRC001 Hand Tool is to tension and cut BAND-IT bands, securing them with buckles. The process begins by feeding the band from a bulk roll, which helps eliminate waste. A buckle is slid onto the band, and the band is then wrapped around the object to be clamped, passing through the buckle again. For enhanced compression, double banding can be performed by wrapping the band around the object twice. The end of the band is then bent under the buckle.
The tool features a nose opening and a gripper block where the band is inserted. The band is moved into a slot as far as possible to prevent the buckle from sliding into the tool nose. The band clamp is tightened by turning a tension handle clockwise, while simultaneously holding the band gripper tight against the band. It's important to note that the spring load of the band gripper is not designed to secure the band or prevent slipping during the tensioning process.
During tensioning, the user places a finger on the BAND-IT band at the buckle bridge. As the tension handle is turned, the user monitors the band's movement through the buckle. Once the band stops moving, it indicates that maximum pressure has been exerted around the object. At this point, the user stops turning the handle.
After tensioning, the tool is rolled over the buckle. Throughout this rolling operation, the tension handle must be backed off. Failure to back off the tension handle during roll-over can lead to the band breaking. The tension achieved is maintained as the released band is used up in the bend. Finally, a cutting handle is pulled to cut the band. After removing the tool, the stub of the band is held down with a thumb, and the buckle ears are hammered down to secure the band stub in place, completing the BAND-IT clamp.
The tool can also be used with Scru-Lokt buckles. The application process is similar to standard BAND-IT clamps, but the tool is not rolled over. After tensioning, a set screw is inserted into the Scru-Lokt buckle and tightened. To allow for future adjustment or re-use of the Scru-Lokt clamp, a 3-inch (7.5 cm) stub of band should be left, enabling the tool to re-grip the band later. This stub can then be folded under.
