Overview

This document describes the Barnstead International Type 30400 Thermolyne Furnace, an automatic and programmable laboratory and heat-treating furnace designed for optimum element life. It is suitable for applications requiring temperatures from 400°F (204°C) to 1800°F (982°C) for continuous use, or temperatures from 1800°F (982°C) to 2000°F (1093°C) for intermittent use (more than 3 hours) and intermittent use (less than 3 hours) respectively.

Function Description:

The Type 30400 furnace is equipped with a heating chamber, an automatic proportioning digital set, digital read control with overtemperature protection, and a door interlock relay for user safety. Programmable models allow for varying temperature or process value over time, with programs stored as a series of segments that can be run once, repeated a set number of times, or run continuously. The controller features sensor break protection, self-tuning capability, and over-temperature protection (OTP). Ashing furnaces (-60 models) include a feature to provide air (or inert gas) flow within the furnace chamber.

  • Altitude limit: 2,000 meters.
  • Storage: -25°C to 65°C; 10% to 85% relative humidity.

Usage Features:

  • Unpacking: Visually inspect for damage, remove packing material from the chamber, vacuum the chamber to remove insulation dust, and retain packaging for potential reshipment.
  • Site Selection: Install on a sturdy surface with adequate space for ventilation. Ambient temperature should not exceed 40°C (104°F).
  • Electrical Connections: Ensure the electrical ratings match the specification plate on the back of the furnace.
  • Operation (All Models):
    • Power Switch: Turns the furnace ON/OFF. The digital display illuminates, and the furnace begins to heat to the controller's setpoint.
    • Cycle Light: Amber light illuminates when heating elements are being applied.
    • Door Safety Switch: Removes power from heating elements when the door is opened. The cycle light switches OFF when the door is opened.
  • Single Setpoint Models w/OTP:
    • Basic Operation: Displays measured value (process value) in the HOME DISPLAY upon startup.
    • Buttons: PAGE (selects parameter lists), SCROLL (selects parameters within a list), DOWN (decreases value), UP (increases value).
    • Viewing/Changing Setpoint: Press UP or DOWN buttons to view/change the setpoint.
    • Viewing Display Units: Press SCROLL button to view temperature units (°C/F/K).
    • Viewing % Output Power: Press SCROLL button twice to view % output power (read-only).
    • Sensor Break Protection: Digital display blinks "S.br" and power to heating element shuts OFF if thermocouple opens.
    • Over-Temperature Protection (OTP): Activates during alarm conditions when temperature deviates beyond the limit. "Deviation High" alarm (idHi) can be adjusted.
    • Tuning: Self-tuning feature optimizes temperature accuracy. Press PAGE, SCROLL, UP/DOWN buttons to initiate and monitor tuning.
  • Single Ramp & Dwell: This controller type offers single ramp and dwell programming capabilities with five different modes.
  • 8 Segment & 4x16 Segment Programmable Models w/OTP:
    • Basic Operation: Performs a self-test and displays measured value in the HOME DISPLAY.
