Overview

The Baxi Bermuda GF3 Super and LFE5 Super are fireside gas central heating units, combining a central heating boiler with a gas fire. The fire primarily heats the room where it is situated, while the boiler provides heating for the rest of the house and, if required, domestic hot water. Both the boiler and fire are independently controlled. The boiler can be managed by an external programmer or clock control (with separate instructions), while the fire is controlled by a knob on the right side of the outer case.

Function Description:

The appliance serves as a dual-purpose heating system. The gas fire provides radiant and convective heat to the immediate room, while the integrated boiler supplies hot water for central heating radiators and domestic hot water systems throughout the home. The independent controls allow users to operate the fire and boiler separately, optimizing energy use and comfort based on their needs. The system is designed for both Natural Gas and Propane Gas, with specific models for each. Propane appliances can be converted to Natural Gas if required.

  • Electrical Supply: Standard 230 volt ~ 50Hz, protected by a 3 amp fuse. The appliance must be earthed.
  • Clearances:
    • Top: 76mm (3 in)
    • Left Hand Side: 25mm (1 in)
    • Right Hand Side: 76mm (3 in)
    • A shelf can be fitted not less than 76mm (3 in) above the fire and not more than 229mm (9 in) in depth. All clearances are essential for servicing and access to the fire control knob.
  • Fuel Effect: Uses a coal bed containing Refractory Ceramic Fibres (R.C.F.).
  • Guarding: The glass front panel conforms to safety standards but does not provide full protection to the young or infirm; a nursery-type guard conforming to BS 6539 is recommended in such cases. The panel becomes very hot during use and must not be touched. The appliance must never be used without the glass front panel fitted.
  • Atmospheric Sensing Device (A.S.D.): Both the boiler and firefront are fitted with a pilot light that acts as an A.S.D. In case of flue interruption, the pilots will extinguish and shut down the fire and boiler. For renewal models (401, 552, 45/3, 57/3), only the fire shuts down.

Usage Features:

  • Lighting the Boiler (Manual Controls):
    1. Remove the controls cover panel.
    2. Turn the boiler thermostat knob to the OFF position (●).
    3. Push in and hold the grey push button on the gas control valve.
    4. Press the igniter button and release, repeating until the pilot lights (visible through the pilot viewing window). Hold the grey button for 15 seconds after ignition. The pilot should stay alight.
    5. Ensure external controls (room thermostat, timer) are calling for heat.
    6. Turn the boiler thermostat knob to the desired position.
  • Lighting the Boiler (Electronic Controls):
    1. Remove the controls cover panel.
    2. Turn the boiler thermostat knob to the OFF position (●).
    3. Ensure external controls are calling for heat.
    4. Turn the boiler thermostat knob to the desired position. The green neon light will illuminate, and the pilot will light shortly after. The pilot is intermittent and only lights when the boiler thermostat calls for heat.
  • Adjusting Boiler Temperature: Turn the boiler thermostat knob clockwise to the required setting.
  • Resetting the Boiler (Electronic Controls): If the boiler lockout light is illuminated, turn the boiler thermostat knob fully anti-clockwise to OFF, wait 10 seconds, then turn to the required setting.
  • Lighting the Fire:
    1. Push in and turn the fire control knob anti-clockwise to the positive stop at position "★". A click will be heard, and the pilot should light.
    2. Hold the control knob for approximately 15 seconds, then release and turn to the desired position. The pilot is visible through the lower right-hand gap between the coals and front panel.
    3. If the burner fails to light, turn the control knob to OFF (●) and repeat.
  • Fire Control Knob Positions: OFF (●), IGNITION/PILOT (★), LOW (1), MED (2), MED/HIGH (3), HIGH (4).
  • Adjusting Fire Setting: Push in the control knob and turn to the appropriate direction.
  • Turning the Fire Off: Push in the control knob and turn clockwise to the OFF position (●). The pilot light can be left on by stopping at the "★" position.
  • Light Effect: Operated by a switch above the control knob (O for OFF, I for ON), usable with or without the fire on.
  • Shutting Down the Boiler (Manual Controls):
    • Short Periods: Turn the boiler thermostat knob to OFF (●). The pilot will remain alight.
    • Long Periods: Turn the grey push button clockwise and release, then turn the boiler thermostat knob to OFF (●).
  • Shutting Down the Boiler (Electronic Controls): Turn the thermostat knob to OFF (●).
  • Shutting Down Both Fire and Boiler: Isolate the electrical supply to system controls (Timer/Programmer).
  • Gas Leaks: If suspected, turn off the gas supply at the meter immediately and contact an installer or Transco.
  • Prohibitions: Never hang clothes or other items over the appliance. Never operate a faulty appliance.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Servicing: Strongly recommended for safety and economy. An installer or British Gas Service can advise.
  • Cleaning the Fire:
    • Ensure the fire is cold.
    • Painted panels and metalwork should be wiped with a damp cloth and dried with a lint-free cloth.
    • Timber parts of the LFE5 Super outercase can be polished with a silicone-based polish.
    • The glass front panel can be cleaned on the inside face by first removing it. Clean regularly with a non-abrasive cream cleanser.
    • Coal Bed Cleaning: If soot accumulation becomes excessive, the fuel effect coal bed should be removed. Gloves are recommended due to fragility. Clean in a well-ventilated area by gently brushing with a soft brush, holding the coal bed away from the face to avoid inhaling dust. Do not use a domestic vacuum cleaner. Keep the coal bed away from children. Never use coals other than those supplied or Genuine Baxi Spare Parts. Never add additional coals. Wash hands thoroughly after handling.
    • The coal bed can be retouched using black stain (Part No 043224).
  • Removal of Glass Frame:
    1. Ensure the fire and bulbs are cold.
    2. Withdraw the electric plug.
    3. Carefully remove the fender and reflector assembly by lifting it upwards, then swinging its lower edge forwards.
    4. Slide the glass retaining clamps sideways.
    5. Lift the glass front panel bottom edge out of the locating channel.
    6. Carefully remove the front panel by pulling the bottom edge forwards and downwards.
    7. Re-assemble in reverse order, ensuring the rope seal is undamaged.
    • Important: The appliance must never be used without the glass front panel fitted. If the glass panel is damaged or cracked, the fire must not be used until it has been replaced with heat-resistant glass.
  • Replacing Bulbs:
    1. Ensure the fire and bulbs are cold.
    2. Isolate electrical supply.
    3. Carefully remove the fender and reflector assembly.
    4. Replace lamps (max 60W - red).
    5. Re-assemble in reverse order.
  • Frost Damage: If the boiler is left off for long periods during cold weather, draining the whole system is recommended to avoid frost damage.
