Overview

The BEHRINGER SUPER-X PRO CX2310 is a high-precision stereo 2-way/mono 3-way crossover with a separate subwoofer output, designed for both live and studio applications. Its primary function is to split an input signal into several frequency bands, ensuring that each loudspeaker in a multi-way system receives appropriately differentiated input signals. This active frequency crossover is positioned before amplifiers in the signal chain, offering superior performance compared to passive crossovers.

A key benefit of using a frequency crossover like the CX2310 is the reduction of intermodulation distortion. When a single loudspeaker attempts to reproduce both bass and treble frequencies simultaneously, the large amplitude of low-frequency waves can cause the speaker diaphragm to displace significantly, making treble frequencies appear to fluctuate in loudness. By assigning limited frequency ranges to individual loudspeakers, the CX2310 helps achieve a more regular frequency response and dispersion pattern, leading to significantly improved sound quality.

The CX2310 incorporates world-class performance 24 dB per octave Linkwitz-Riley filters, which are known for their absolutely flat summed amplitude response and zero phase difference. This ensures seamless transitions between frequency bands without introducing phase issues that could degrade audio quality.

For enhanced bass reproduction, the device features a separate subwoofer section with independent frequency control. This allows for a dedicated mono subwoofer signal, which is particularly effective because lower frequencies are not easily localized by human hearing. Combining all bass signals into a single mono output can produce a more impactful sound, as multiple bass speaker boxes working together can generate significantly more sound pressure than if they were separated.

The CX2310 offers individual output level controls for all bands, allowing users to precisely adjust the volume of each frequency range. For easy band adjustment during setup or performance, individual output mutes are provided. Additionally, individual phase reverse switches are included for instant phase correction, which can be crucial for optimizing the alignment of loudspeaker diaphragms and preventing cancellations.

To protect low-frequency drivers, each input is equipped with a switchable 25 Hz subsonic filter. This high-pass filter has a side gradient of 12 dB/octave and helps prevent damaging ultra-low frequencies from reaching the bass loudspeakers.

Connectivity is robust, featuring servo-balanced, gold-plated XLR connectors for all inputs and outputs. This design ensures automatic hum suppression for balanced signals, providing trouble-free operation even at high operating levels. The automatic servo-function also recognizes unbalanced connectors and adjusts the nominal level internally to maintain consistent levels between input and output signals.

The CX2310 is built with ultra-high precision ALPS potentiometers, ensuring ultimate accuracy and repeatability in control settings. It utilizes ultra low-noise audio operational 4580 amplifiers for outstanding sound performance. For secure operation in dark stage environments, all switches are illuminated. The device boasts high-quality components and exceptionally rugged construction, promising long life and reliability. A shielded toroidal mains transformer is integrated to minimize noise interference. The product is manufactured under an ISO9000 certified management system, reflecting a commitment to quality.

For setup, the CX2310 provides clear visual feedback. All active controls are accompanied by light-emitting diodes, which illuminate to indicate active functions in either stereo 2-way or mono 3-way mode. The front panel features two labels—one for mono 3-way and one for stereo 2-way—with LEDs below them showing which controls are active in the selected mode. On the rear panel, labels above and below the connectors guide proper configuration for various crossover modes.

When setting up the CX2310, it is recommended to use a high-grade measurement microphone with a linear frequency response (e.g., BEHRINGER ECM8000) and an analyzer (e.g., BEHRINGER ULTRA-CURVE PRO DSP8024) to optimize crossover frequencies and levels. The process involves playing pink noise, muting bands, and adjusting levels to achieve a 3 dB increase around crossover points. Room acoustics significantly impact frequency response, so an equalizer may be needed to correct irregularities. Phase errors and cancellations, often caused by misaligned loudspeaker diaphragms, can be addressed using the phase invert switches or, in more complex scenarios, delay functions. It is crucial to consult manufacturer specifications for individual loudspeaker components when setting crossover frequencies and to avoid operating loudspeakers below their specified limiting frequencies.

Maintenance features include a warning to check for damage upon receipt and to ensure proper ventilation around the unit to prevent overheating. Users are advised to verify the correct supply voltage before connecting to mains and to ensure all units are properly grounded. The fuse holder on the mains connector can be adjusted for different operating voltages (though not on export models designed for a single voltage). For safety, users should never remove ground connectors from electrical devices or power cords. If the unit is damaged, it should not be returned directly but reported to the dealer and shipping company immediately. Servicing should be referred to qualified personnel, and users should not attempt to service the appliance beyond what is described in the operating instructions. The manual also provides detailed safety instructions regarding water and moisture, ventilation, heat, power source, grounding, power-cord protection, cleaning, non-use periods, debris and liquid entry, and damage requiring service.
