Troubleshooting
If you have a problem with your shredder, check the symptoms and remedies below.
If you cannot solve the problem this way, contact Black & Decker paper shredders
Customer Service. Do not open shredder head to attempt repair: It could
expose you to electric shock and will void your warranty.
Symptom Remedy
a) Make sure that the unit is plugged in and that the outlet it is
plugged into is in good working order.
b) Be sure to not tilt open the cover completely
beyond the preset position, otherwise the
ShredSafe power cut off feature will be
activated and the shredder will be inoperable.
c) In the event that the shredder is runing continuously for
too long and the motor overheats, a thermal overload
switch will automatically shut the power off. If this happens,
move the switch to the off position for 20 minutes or more
before continuing.
The shredder will not start running until paper, CD/DVD, or
credit card is inserted into the appropriate feed slot. It is normal
for the motor to run for a moment after the shredder is powered
on but it should stop until paper is inserted. The trigger that
activates the shredder is located directly in the center of the feed
slot. If the paper you are inserting is narrow, it may not be
hitting the switch. It is possible that the trigger, which activates
the shredder, has become blocked with paper. Insert an index
card, directly in the center of the feed slot, and apply force.
This will usually clear any paper blocking the switch or force
the switch closed.
Shredder does not work at all.
Shredder runs in "Rev" mode
but not in "Auto" mode.

Cleaning
Installation
ALWAYS UNPLUG THE SHREDDER BEFORE CLEANING!
Only clean the shredder by carefully wiping the unit with a dry soft cloth or towel.
Do not clean or immerse shredder in water. Having the unit wet may result in
damage or malfunction to the electrical components. If the shredder happens to
get wet, be sure to completely dry the unit immediately with a cloth or towel.
Never use anything flammable to clean the shredder. This may result in serious
injury or damage to the product.
When shredding is completed, you can press the designated “push close” area on the
cover to tilt shut the paper feed slot (FIGURE 5). It is recommended to have the paper
feed slot closed when shredder is not in use. This will prevent any objects from getting
into the feed slot and accidentally shredded.
*Be sure to not tilt open the cover completely beyond the preset position,
otherwise the ShredSafe power cut off feature will be activated and
the shredder will be inoperable.
Operation
ShredSafe technology is an added safety feature incorporated in this particular
model. It is a new technology where the shredder is able to detect forced entry and
automatically cuts the power off, preventing further shredding.
To begin shredding, locate the switch on the unit and select the Auto mode (FIGURE 2).
The Green LED light indicates the shredder is On and ready to use. Press the designated
push open area on cover to tilt open and expose the paper feed slot (FIGURE 3).

This shredder includes a built-in safety mechanism that requires the
shredder to be correctly mounted on the supplied wastebasket. It is not
designed to operate with any other wastebaskets. An activation switch located on the
head unit automatically shuts off the shredder when it is lifted or removed. The supplied
wastebasket activates this switch, which allows the shredder to be operable. Lining the
wastebasket with a plastic bag will interfere and may keep the shredder from functioning.
Caution: MicroShred shredders have very sharp exposed blades on the underside.
Use care when mounting the shredder on the wastebasket.

Overview

The Black & Decker paper shredder, SKU #BD-680A, is designed to protect against identity theft by efficiently shredding documents. It has been engineered for innovation, performance, and quality, ensuring years of safe and efficient operation.

Function Description

This paper shredder is primarily used to destroy sensitive paper documents, credit cards, and CDs/DVDs, rendering them unreadable and unusable. It features a robust cutting mechanism that transforms these items into small, unrecoverable pieces. The shredder is designed for secure mounting on a wastebasket, which is essential for its operation. A built-in safety mechanism ensures that the shredder will only operate when correctly mounted on the supplied wastebasket. If the head unit is lifted or removed, an activation switch automatically shuts off the shredder, preventing accidental operation. The device is not designed to operate with other wastebaskets.

The shredder incorporates ShredSafe™ technology, an advanced safety feature that detects forced entry into the feed slot and automatically cuts off power, preventing further shredding. This ensures an added layer of protection during use.

Usage Features

To begin using the shredder, the user must first mount it securely on the rim of the provided wastebasket and connect the power cord to a standard 120-volt AC outlet. The socket-outlet should be easily accessible.

The shredder offers three operational modes:

  • Auto (I): In this mode, the shredder automatically starts when paper is inserted into the shred opening. The user should feed paper as straight as possible, from both left and right sides. Once the paper has passed through, the shredder automatically stops. This is the primary mode for shredding documents.
  • Off (O): This setting turns off all features of the shredder. For safety reasons, it is recommended to leave the shredder in the "Off" position whenever it is unattended or not in use.
  • Reverse (R): This mode is used to clear paper jams. In the event of a jam, the reverse setting can help clear the cutters of paper that has not passed through. It is crucial to empty the wastebasket before attempting to clear a jam using the reverse function.

The shredder features a "push open" area on the cover, which, when pressed, tilts open to expose the paper feed slot. This cover clicks into a preset position for safe shredding. It is important not to tilt the cover completely beyond this preset position, as doing so will activate the ShredSafe™ power cut-off feature, rendering the shredder inoperable. Once shredding is complete, the cover can be tilted shut by pressing the "push close" area. Keeping the paper feed slot closed when not in use is recommended to prevent objects from accidentally being shredded.

The shredder can handle paper, credit cards, and CDs/DVDs. When shredding credit cards, they should be fed vertically within the designated area, and only one credit card should be fed at a time. While the shredder can shred staples, it is recommended to remove them whenever possible to extend the life of the shredder. It is explicitly stated not to shred plastic (except credit cards), any hard materials, continuous forms, newsprint, or anything with adhesives, including labels and envelopes.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the shredder's optimal performance and longevity.

  • Waste Bin Emptying: It is important to empty the waste bin regularly to ensure the smooth operation of the cutting cylinders. The shredder will not operate when the bin is full. Lining the wastebasket with a plastic bag is not recommended, as it can interfere with the activation switch and prevent the shredder from functioning correctly.
  • Oiling: Regular oiling is necessary for proper performance. It is recommended to oil the shredder every few weeks.
  • Cleaning: Before cleaning, the shredder must always be unplugged. The unit should only be cleaned by carefully wiping it with a dry, soft cloth or towel. It should never be cleaned or immersed in water, as getting the unit wet can damage or malfunction the electrical components. If the shredder does get wet, it should be completely dried immediately with a cloth or towel. Flammable materials should never be used to clean the shredder, as this may result in serious injury or damage.

Safety Precautions:

The manual emphasizes several safety warnings, including keeping fingers and other body parts away from hazardous moving parts. Children should never operate the shredder, even under adult supervision, as it is not a toy. Flammable synthetic oil, petroleum-based products, or aerosols should never be used on or near the product. The power cord should always be kept clear of the shredder opening. Jewelry, hair, or loose clothing should be kept away from the feed slot to avoid serious injury. The product should not be handled with wet hands. The shredder should always be unplugged when not in use, and children and pets should be kept away from it. The shredder should not be placed near heat or water sources. Users should never attempt to feed more sheets of paper than specified or shred materials other than paper, credit cards, and CDs. When feeding CDs or DVDs, users should not hold them with a finger through the center ring. Opening the shredder head to attempt repair is strongly discouraged, as it could expose the user to electric shock and will void the warranty.

In case of troubleshooting, users are advised to check common symptoms and remedies outlined in the manual. If problems persist, Black & Decker paper shredders Customer Service should be contacted. The shredder head should not be opened for repair attempts.
