Overview

The Black & Decker BD-890A is a paper shredder designed to protect against identity theft by securely destroying documents. It features a robust design and engineering to meet user needs for performance and quality.

Function Description:

The primary function of the BD-890A is to shred paper, credit cards, and CDs/DVDs into small, unreadable pieces. It operates with a "ShredSafe™" technology, which is an added safety feature that detects forced entry and automatically cuts off power to prevent further shredding. The shredder is designed for ease of use with an "Auto" mode that automatically starts shredding when paper is inserted and stops when the paper has passed through. It also includes a "Rev" (reverse) setting to help clear paper jams. The shredder's cover can be tilted open to expose the paper feed slot for shredding and then tilted shut when not in use to prevent accidental shredding or foreign objects from entering the slot.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Sheet Capacity: Up to 8 sheets of 20 lb. bond paper.
  • Credit Card Capacity: 1 at a time.
  • Paper Shred Size: 1/8" x 11/32" pieces (3.3 mm x 9 mm pieces).
  • Voltage: 120V-60Hz 3.5A.
  • Shredding Materials: Paper, credit cards, CDs/DVDs.
  • Safety Features: ShredSafe™ technology, safety power cut-off if the wastebasket door is open (for models with pull-out wastebaskets), automatic shut-off when the head unit is lifted or removed from the wastebasket, thermal overload switch.
  • Warranty: Limited Lifetime Warranty with 5 years on cutting cylinders and 1 year on all other parts against defects in workmanship and material.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: The shredder requires attachment of 4 caster wheels to the bottom of the wastebasket and secure mounting of the shredder head to the rim of the wastebasket. It must be correctly mounted on the supplied wastebasket to function, as an activation switch allows operation only when the wastebasket is in place.
  • Operation Modes:
    • Auto: Automatically starts shredding upon paper insertion. Paper should be fed straight, from both left and right sides of the feed slot.
    • Off: Turns off all shredder features. Recommended for safety when unattended.
    • Rev (Reverse): Helps clear paper jams. Should only be used after emptying the wastebasket.
  • Paper Feed: The cover tilts open to expose the paper feed slot, which clicks into a preset position for safe shredding. Paper can be fed from both left and right sides.
  • Credit Card Shredding: Credit cards must be fed vertically within the designated area, one at a time.
  • Prohibited Materials: Do not shred plastic (except credit cards), hard materials, continuous forms, newsprint, or anything with adhesives (labels, envelopes). While staples can be shredded, removing them is recommended to extend the shredder's life.
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Keep fingers, hands, jewelry, hair, and loose clothing away from moving parts and feed slot.
    • Never allow children to operate; it is not a toy.
    • Do not use flammable oils, petroleum-based products, or aerosols.
    • Do not operate with a damaged cord.
    • Do not handle with wet hands.
    • Keep children and pets away.
    • Unplug when not in use.
    • Do not overfeed paper.
    • Do not hold CD/DVD with a finger through the center ring.
    • Empty wastebasket before it becomes full.
    • Do not place near heat or water.
    • Do not open shredder head for repair.
    • The socket-outlet must be easily accessible.
    • Ensure the cover is not tilted completely beyond the preset position, as this will activate the ShredSafe™ power cut-off.

Maintenance Features:

  • Waste Bin Emptying: Regular emptying of the waste bin is crucial for smooth operation. The shredder will not operate if the bin is full.
  • Oiling: Regular oiling with shredder oil every few weeks is necessary for proper performance.
  • Cleaning:
    • ALWAYS UNPLUG THE SHREDDER BEFORE CLEANING.
    • Wipe the unit with a dry, soft cloth or towel.
    • Do not immerse in water. If it gets wet, dry it immediately.
    • Never use flammable materials for cleaning.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues like the shredder not working or running in "Rev" mode but not "Auto" mode, along with suggested remedies. For persistent problems, users are advised to contact Black & Decker customer service and explicitly warned not to open the shredder head.
