Overview

The BLACK+DECKER BDXPC803 Animal Repeller is an outdoor device designed to deter deer, rabbits, groundhogs, cats, and other medium to large-sized animals using a motion-activated sprinkler system. It utilizes Infrared (IR) sensors combined with advanced programming to minimize false activations.

Function Description:

The primary function of the BDXPC803 is to act as an animal repeller by detecting animal movement within its coverage area and activating a sprinkler to spray water, thus startling and deterring them. The device can also be set to function as a full-time sprinkler if desired. Multiple units can be linked together using the add-on line output on the metal stake.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: BDXPC803
  • Recommended Water Pressure: 7-116 psi
  • Recommended Temperature Range: 33-140°F (1-60°C)
  • Power Source (Solar Model): 2 x 1.2V AA NiMH rechargeable batteries
  • Solar Panel: 4.5V DC, 0.5W
  • Sensor Range: Approximately 30 ft (adjustable)
  • Sprinkler Coverage: Arc-shaped, with adjustable distance, range, and pattern.

Usage Features:

  • Outdoor Use Only: The device is specifically designed for outdoor use.
  • Infrared (IR) Sensor: Detects animal movement to trigger the sprinkler.
  • Adjustable Sensitivity: A dial on the back of the unit allows adjustment of the IR sensor's sensitivity, from "O" (off) to "4" (approximately 30 ft sensing range).
  • Full-time Sprinkler Mode: The device can be set to "S" mode to bypass sensing and operate as a continuous sprinkler.
  • Solar Powered: Equipped with a solar panel to charge the rechargeable batteries, ensuring continuous operation without external power.
  • Optional Riser Tube: An optional riser tube can be threaded onto the sensor housing to increase the height of the unit, allowing for better coverage or targeting of specific animal sizes.
  • Linkable: The device features an add-on line output on its metal stake, enabling multiple repellers to be connected and operate in series.
  • Easy Assembly: Components like the solar panel, spray unit, and step spike thread together by hand.
  • Placement: Should be placed in an area with good visibility to the animals intended to be deterred, ensuring the solar panel faces the sun for optimal charging. The stake should be pushed firmly into the ground using the footrests.
  • Water Connection: Connects to a standard garden hose.
  • Testing: The IR sensor can be tested by turning the dial to position "4" and waving a hand in front of it. The valve should open and close after five seconds.

Maintenance Features:

  • Solar Panel Cleaning: The solar panel's top surface should be wiped gently with a damp cloth periodically to maintain charging efficiency.
  • Winter Storage: The device must be taken indoors during winter in freezing areas to prevent damage.
  • Leak Prevention: If leaks occur between joints, a slight hand tightening may be needed. Avoid overtightening to prevent damage.
  • Hose Gasket Replacement: Over time, hose gaskets can wear out. If hand tightening does not stop leaks, new hose gaskets (not included) are suggested.
  • Battery Replacement: The device uses 2 x 1.2V AA NiMH rechargeable batteries. When replacing, ensure correct polarity and use only NiMH batteries. Old batteries should be removed and disposed of according to local regulations. New batteries may require several hours of full sunlight to attain a proper charge.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common issues such as water leaks, sprinkler not activating, sensor not detecting movement, and sprinkler activating when no animals are present. It advises checking connections, battery charge, solar panel alignment, sensor sensitivity, and for obstructions.
  • Customer Service: For problems not resolved by troubleshooting, customers are advised to contact customer service at 1-888-338-6798 or email help@umbagroup.com, rather than returning the product to the store. Proof of purchase and model number are required for warranty service.

Safety Information:

  • WARNING: Product is intended for use with animals and should not be installed in a location that could startle a person.
  • Battery Safety: Contains warnings regarding battery acid leakage, proper disposal, avoiding incineration or excessive heat, correct battery polarity, not mixing old and new batteries or different brands, and using only NiMH rechargeable batteries. Exhausted batteries should be promptly removed.
  • Water Pressure: Improper setup with sprinklers can increase the risk of property damage. It is recommended to limit water supply by opening the valve no more than 3/4 turn and use good quality hoses. For high-pressure lines, a water pressure reducer at the hose faucet connection is advised.
  • Repairs: Users are warned not to attempt to adjust or repair the deer repeller themselves. Servicing should be done by factory-authorized service personnel using like components to minimize risks.
