Do you have a question about the Blagdon POWERSAFE 2 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Blagdon Powersafe Switchbox is a robust and intelligently designed outdoor electrical distribution unit, specifically engineered for pond equipment. It serves as a central hub for powering and protecting multiple pond devices, ensuring their safe and reliable operation. The range includes 2, 3, 4, and 5-outlet models, catering to various pond setups and equipment needs.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Powersafe Switchbox is to provide a safe and organized power supply to multiple pond appliances, such as pumps, filters, UVC filters, garden lighting, air pumps, and electronic blanket weed controllers. Each outlet is individually switched and fused, offering independent control and protection for each connected device. This individual protection is a key feature, as it means that if one piece of equipment fails or draws excessive current, only its dedicated fuse will blow, allowing other essential pond equipment to continue functioning without interruption.

The switchbox incorporates a unique "at-a-glance" power status indication system. Each switch has an associated indicator light that clearly communicates the status of the connected appliance:

  • NO LIGHT: Indicates that the switch is off, or the fuse has blown, meaning no power is being supplied to the outlet.
  • RED LIGHT: Signifies that the switch is off, but power is available on standby.
  • GREEN LIGHT: Shows that the switch is on and power is actively being supplied to the appliance.

This visual feedback system allows users to quickly identify the operational status of each piece of equipment and diagnose potential issues, such as a blown fuse, without needing to open the unit or perform complex electrical checks.

The unit is designed for permanent connection to the fixed wiring of the mains system and requires installation with a Residual Current Device (RCD) or Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB) with a tripping current not exceeding 30mA in the supply circuit. This ensures enhanced safety against electrical shocks. It should also be connected to a mains supply fused with a 13 amp fuse or 15 amp circuit breaker.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models: Available in 2-way, 3-way, 4-way, and 5-way configurations.
  • Voltage: 220/240V
  • Hertz: 50/60 Hz
  • Safety Rating: IP56 CC (indicating protection against dust ingress and powerful water jets, suitable for outdoor use).
  • Maximum Cable Size: External diameter of 9mm (for 3-core 1.5 flex).
  • Maximum Power Output (Switch 1): 1000W (1.0KW). This higher rating is typically for a main pond pump or filter.
  • Maximum Power Output (Switches 2-5): 300W (0.3KW) per switch. The total number of 300W outputs depends on the model (e.g., 1x300W for 2-way, 4x300W for 5-way).
  • Fuses:
    • Switch 1: 5 AMP fuse (Spare Code: 1040433)
    • Subsequent Switches (2-5): 1.5 AMP fuse (Spare Code: 1040440)

Usage Features:

  • Individual Switching and Fusing: Each outlet has its own double-pole switch for complete electrical isolation when off, and an individual fuse for overload protection. This prevents a fault in one appliance from affecting others.
  • Power Status Indicators: The red/green/no light system provides immediate visual feedback on the operational status of each connected device.
  • Weatherproof Design: The IP56 CC rating ensures the unit is suitable for outdoor installation, protecting internal components from dust and water ingress.
  • Cable Management: Features cable glands with rubber seals and clamps to ensure a secure, weatherproof entry for appliance cables, accommodating cables up to 9mm external diameter. Unused glands can be sealed with a retained plug to maintain weatherproofing.
  • Easy Installation: Designed for straightforward mounting on a post or wall using a fixing bracket. The cover is secured by four screws, and the internal circuit board is removable for easier wiring.
  • Appliance Identification: Labels are provided to mark the recess above each switch, allowing users to clearly identify which appliance is connected to which switch.
  • Robust Construction: Built to withstand outdoor conditions and protect sensitive electrical connections.

Maintenance Features:

  • Fuse Replacement: Fuses are user-replaceable. The manual provides clear instructions for safely replacing a blown fuse, including the need to switch off and isolate mains power. Spare fuse codes are also provided.
  • Seal and Button Checks: It is recommended to check the cover seal and rubber buttons once a season for wear and damage. This ensures the weatherproof integrity of the unit.
  • Spare Parts Availability: Key components like fixing brackets, cover seals, cable glands, fuses, and rubber switch cover buttons are available as spares, allowing for easy replacement of worn or damaged parts.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a "Faults - Problems Procedure" to help users diagnose common issues before contacting customer support or returning the product. This typically involves checking fuses, cable connections, and the mains RCD.
  • Long-term Durability: The product is guaranteed against defects in material and workmanship for 2 years under normal usage, with provisions for repair or replacement of faulty products. Exclusions apply for improper use, negligence, lack of maintenance, or accidental damage.
