Overview

This document is the Owner's Operation and Installation Manual for the Bluegrass Living Vent-Free Yellow Flame Gas Log Chassis, specifically for models BC18NR and BC18PR. It provides comprehensive information on the device's function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Bluegrass Living Vent-Free Yellow Flame Gas Log Chassis is a gas-fired heater designed for use as supplemental heat. It produces a yellow flame, simulating a traditional wood-burning fireplace. The appliance is vent-free, meaning it does not require a chimney or flue for operation in most cases, but it can also be used as a vented product if local codes or specific installation requirements dictate. A key safety feature is the Oxygen Depletion Sensing (ODS) safety shutoff system, which turns off the heater if there isn't enough fresh air available. The log set is designed to be smokeless, and any smoking during operation indicates a problem requiring service.

The heater is equipped with an electronic piezo ignition system for easy lighting. For remote control models, it includes a remote control (transmitter) and a receiver for convenient operation. The remote control allows users to turn the unit on/off, switch between manual and thermostatic modes, and set a desired room temperature. In thermostatic mode, the system automatically adjusts the flame to maintain the set temperature within a certain differential.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual provides specific technical specifications for both models:

  • Ignition: Electronic Piezo for both BC18NR and BC18PR.
  • Gas Type:
    • BC18NR: Natural Gas
    • BC18PR: Propane
  • Max. Input Rating: 30,000 BTU/Hr for both models.
  • Min. Input Rating:
    • BC18NR: 16,000 BTU/Hr
    • BC18PR: 27,000 BTU/Hr
  • Manifold Pressure:
    • BC18NR: 3" W.C.
    • BC18PR: 8" W.C.
  • Inlet Gas Pressure (inches of water):
    • BC18NR: Max. 10.5" W.C., Min. 5" W.C.
    • BC18PR: Max. 14" W.C., Min. 11" W.C.
  • Minimum Firebox Size:
    • Height: 20"
    • Depth: 13"
    • Front Width: 29"
    • Rear Width: 22"
  • Clearances to Combustible Materials:
    • Side Wall: 16"
    • Ceiling: 42"
    • Front: 36"
    • Minimum 16" from Side Wall (for combustible to wall clearance).
  • Noncombustible Material Clearances (above fireplace opening):
    • If 12" or more: Noncombustible material OK.
    • If between 8" and 12": Install fireplace hood accessory.
    • If less than 8": Noncombustible material must be extended to at least 8".
  • Floor Clearances:
    • If installed at floor level: 14" minimum distance to combustibles.
    • If combustible materials are less than 14" to the fireplace: Install appliance at least 5" above the combustible flooring.
  • Battery Requirements:
    • Ignitor: 1 AAA battery
    • Remote Control: 2 or 3 AAA batteries (quantity depends on model)
    • Remote Receiver: 4 AA batteries

Usage Features

  • Supplemental Heating: Intended for supplemental heat, not as a primary heat source. Can be used with a central heating system's circulating blower to distribute heat.
  • Vent-Free or Vented Operation: Can be installed as vent-free or vented. If vented, the chimney flue damper must always be open, and a damper clamp accessory (not provided) must be installed to ensure a minimum permanent flue opening.
  • Installation Location: Must be installed in a solid-fuel burning masonry or UL 127 factory-built fireplace, or a listed ventless firebox enclosure. Not to be installed in bedrooms, bathrooms, or recreational vehicles unless vented.
  • Clearances: Strict adherence to minimum clearances from combustible materials is required to prevent fire hazards.
  • Gas Type Specifics: Requires specific gas pressures and connections depending on whether it's a natural gas or propane unit. Propane units require an external regulator (not supplied).
  • Lighting Instructions: Detailed steps for manual lighting and using the electronic piezo ignitor. A safety interlock system requires a one-minute wait before relighting if the pilot goes out.
  • Remote Control System:
    • Programming: Remote and receiver must be "learned" to each other through a specific button sequence.
    • Modes: Manual mode (ON/OFF) and Thermostatic mode (ROOM).
    • Temperature Setting: Allows setting desired room temperature in thermostatic mode (45°F to 99°F or 6°C to 32°C).
    • Temperature Differential ("Swing"): The system activates when the room temperature varies by +/-2°F (1°C) from the set temperature.
    • LCD Display: Shows current room temperature, set temperature, flame icon (when burner is on), and mode (ROOM/TEMP).
    • Battery Replacement: Batteries in the remote and receiver should be replaced annually or sooner, and the learning process must be repeated after battery replacement.
  • Fireplace Screen: A fireplace screen must be in place before operating the heater.
  • Glass Doors: If the fireplace has glass doors, they must be fully open during operation to prevent heat buildup and glass breakage.

Maintenance Features

  • Regular Inspection: Control areas, burner, and circulating air passageways should be kept clean. Inspect these areas before each use.
  • Annual Service: Have the heater inspected yearly by a qualified service technician. More frequent cleaning may be needed if there is excessive lint from carpeting, bedding material, or pet hair.
  • Burner and Pilot Assembly Cleaning:
    • Recommended every 2,500 hours of operation or every three months.
    • Use compressed air (no greater than 30 PSI) or a vacuum cleaner in blow position to clean burner ports/slots, pilot assembly, and primary air inlet holes on the injector holder.
    • Blocked burner flame holes or a yellow tip on the pilot flame indicate a need for cleaning.
  • ODS/Pilot Cleaning: Use a vacuum cleaner, pressurized air, or a small, soft-bristled brush. Never use a wire, needle, or similar object to clean the ODS/pilot unit, as this can damage it.
  • Log Maintenance: If logs are removed for cleaning, refer to the log set owner's manual for proper replacement. Replace any broken or chipped logs (dime-size or larger).
  • Gas Leak Check: Test all gas piping and connections for leaks after installation or servicing using a noncorrosive leak detection fluid. Correct all leaks immediately. Never use an open flame to check for leaks.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A comprehensive troubleshooting section helps diagnose common issues such as ignitor problems, burner ignition failures, flame issues (yellow flame, backfiring), and gas odors, providing possible causes and corrective actions.
  • Parts Replacement: Use only original replacement parts to maintain warranty coverage. Contact authorized dealers or customer service for parts.
  • Chimney and Firebox Cleaning (for solid fuel burning fireplaces): Before installing in a solid fuel burning fireplace, the chimney flue and firebox must be cleaned of soot, creosote, ashes, and loose paint by a qualified chimney cleaner. Inspect for damage and repair if necessary.
  • Sealing Vents: Seal any fresh air vents or ash clean-out doors in the fireplace to prevent drafting, which can cause pilot outage or sooting. Do not seal the chimney flue damper.
