Overview

This document describes the VLRK-00 Remote On/Off Safety Pilot Valve Kit with Propane Conversion, a gas-fired appliance designed for installation in solid-fuel burning fireplaces with a working flue and noncombustible construction. This kit provides a safe and convenient way to ignite and operate a vented gas log set without matches, batteries, or other external ignition sources.

Function Description:

The VLRK-00 kit is a control valve system that allows for remote on/off operation of a gas log set. It is designed for both natural gas and propane applications, with specific components included for propane conversion. The system utilizes a safety pilot valve, which is mandated for all propane installations by the National Fuel Gas Code. The remote control operates the gas flow to the burners, while a safety feature, THERMO-SAFETY, automatically shuts off gas flow if the receiver case temperature exceeds 130°F (54°C), reactivating when the temperature drops below 120°F (49°C).

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual provides specifications for 18", 24", and 30" log sets, all designed for natural gas initially, with conversion capabilities for propane.

  • BTU Input (Natural Gas):
    • 18" Sets: 45,000 BTU/Hr
    • 24" Sets: 55,000 BTU/Hr
    • 30" Sets: 65,000 BTU/Hr
    • Note: BTU/Hr rating remains the same when converted to propane gas.
  • Minimum Vent Opening: 8" Diameter for all set sizes.
  • Burner Orifice (Propane):
    • 18" Sets: 2.05 mm
    • 24" Sets: 2.25 mm
    • 30" Sets: 2.42 mm
  • Fuel Inlet Pressure Specifications (W.C.):
    • Natural Gas: Minimum 5.5" W.C., Maximum 10.5" W.C.
    • Propane Gas: Minimum 11" W.C., Maximum 13" W.C.
  • Minimum Firebox Sizes:
    • 18" Sets: Front Width 29", Back Width 23", Depth 15", Height 18"
    • 24" Sets: Front Width 33", Back Width 25", Depth 15", Height 18"
    • 30" Sets: Front Width 39", Back Width 37", Depth 16", Height 19"
  • Remote Receiver: Must be positioned where ambient temperatures do not exceed 130°F (54°C).
  • Remote Transmitter: Operates on a 12V (A23) ALKALINE battery (included).

Usage Features:

  • Remote On/Off Operation: The kit includes a remote transmitter and receiver for convenient control of the gas log set. The transmitter has ON and OFF buttons.
  • Receiver Modes: The receiver features a 3-position slide switch:
    • REMOTE: Allows the transmitter to operate the appliance and for initial programming.
    • OFF: Disables the receiver, recommended for safety and battery preservation during extended periods of inactivity.
    • ON: Allows the appliance burners to operate without the remote transmitter.
  • Programming: The transmitter has 256 unique security codes. Programming the receiver to learn the transmitter's code is required upon initial use, after battery replacement, or when using a replacement transmitter. This involves pressing and releasing a "LEARN" button on the receiver, followed by pressing and holding the ON/OFF button on the transmitter until "BEEPS" confirm the code acceptance.
  • Manual Lighting Procedure: In case the ignitor or electrode are not working, the pilot can be lit manually with a match.
  • Safety Interlock System: The appliance has a safety interlock system that requires a 1-minute wait before attempting to light the pilot again if it goes out.
  • Pilot Operation: The control knob allows for selection of OFF, PILOT, and ON positions. The pilot must be lit and stable before the main burner can be ignited.
  • Propane Conversion: The kit includes an Air Mixer and appropriate propane orifice for converting the unit from natural gas to propane.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Cleaning: The area around the log set should be kept clean and free of debris. A soft bristle brush can be used to clean the logs occasionally.
  • Annual Inspection: A qualified agency or certified chimney sweep should examine and clean the fireplace's venting system annually.
  • Pilot Flame Pattern Check: Owners should frequently check the pilot flame pattern and burner flame pattern. Incorrect patterns indicate a need for cleaning or adjustment. The manual provides diagrams for "Good Pilot Flame Pattern" and "Bad Pilot Flame Pattern."
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a troubleshooting section to address common issues such as pilot noise, pilot not lighting, pilot and burner going out, and burner not lighting when the pilot is operating. This guide helps identify causes like excess pressure, inadequate gas flow, overheating thermocouple, loose connections, or low battery power.
  • Gas Leak Detection: Instructions are provided for checking gas connections for leaks using a noncorrosive leak detection fluid, emphasizing that an open flame should never be used for this purpose.
  • Parts List: A comprehensive list of replacement parts is provided, including the remote operated gas valve, pilot assembly, pilot tube, thermocouple, propane air mixer, pipe adaptor, propane injectors for different set sizes, heat shield, pilot bracket, transmitter, receiver, and igniter. A separate part for the propane pilot orifice is also listed.
  • Warranty Information: Bluegrass Living offers a standard one-year warranty for new products against defects in material and workmanship, provided the product is installed, maintained, and operated according to instructions. Factory reconditioned products have a 30-day limited warranty. The warranty requires registration and proof of purchase.
