The Blustream MFP31 is a versatile multi-format presentation switch designed for modern meeting spaces such as boardrooms and huddle rooms. It acts as a central hub for various video sources, allowing seamless switching between them to a single display.
The MFP31 features three distinct input types: one HDMI 2.0, one USB-C, and one Mini DisplayPort™. These inputs converge to a single HDMI output, simplifying connectivity to a display device. The device supports both manual and automatic source selection, offering flexibility in how users manage their presentations. When a new source is connected or an existing one is powered on, the MFP31 can automatically switch to that input. Alternatively, users can manually cycle through the connected sources by pressing a button on the top of the unit. The switching order follows the physical input connections: USB-C > HDMI > MINI-DP, and then cycles back.
A key feature for user feedback is the LED ring surrounding the source input button. This ring illuminates in blue when a connected source is actively outputting a video/audio stream. During the switching process, the LED ring turns red while the unit establishes a new connection. To further aid in source identification, the LED ring blinks a specific number of times to indicate the newly selected input: one blink for USB-C, two blinks for HDMI, and three blinks for Mini DisplayPort™. This visual feedback helps users quickly identify which source is currently being passed to the HDMI output.
The MFP31 is built to support high-bandwidth video and audio signals. It adheres to the HDMI 2.0 18Gbps specification, ensuring compatibility with the latest display technologies. This includes full support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) pass-through, allowing for vibrant and detailed visuals. The device can handle resolutions up to 4K UHD at 60Hz with 4:4:4 chroma subsampling, providing crisp and clear images.
Audio support is comprehensive, encompassing all known HDMI audio formats. This includes high-fidelity codecs such as Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD Master Audio, ensuring an immersive audio experience.
For its Mini DisplayPort™ and USB-C inputs, the MFP31 supports resolutions up to 4K UHD at 60Hz with 4:4:4 chroma subsampling, conforming to the DP1.2 standard. This broad compatibility makes it suitable for a wide range of modern laptops, tablets, and other source devices.
The device is HDCP 2.2 compliant, which is crucial for playing protected content from sources like Blu-ray players and streaming devices.
The MFP31 is designed for ease of use. Its compact, circular form factor makes it suitable for placement on a table in a meeting room. The top of the unit features the source selection button, which is intuitive to operate. The rear panel houses the output and power connections, while the front panel provides easy access to the input ports.
For optimal performance, especially when transmitting UHD video content, it is critical to use 18Gbps compliant cabling. Users should be aware that standard charging cables supplied with many USB-C phones, tablets, and laptops are often not capable of carrying video or audio signals. Therefore, a dedicated USB-C cable specifically designed for video and audio transmission must be used. Keeping cable distances to a minimum is also recommended to prevent signal loss, degradation, or handshaking issues.
The MFP31 includes a micro-USB port on the rear panel labeled "UPGRADE." This port serves a dual purpose: it provides power to the unit (via a 5V/1A USB power supply) and also allows for firmware upgrades. This ensures that the device can be kept up-to-date with the latest features and bug fixes, extending its lifespan and compatibility with evolving technologies. The package includes a USB to Micro-USB charging cable for this purpose.
