8. 10 TIPS TO HELP YOU ADJUST TO CPAP
8.1 Start using your CPAP for short periods of time during the day while you relax, read or watch TV.
8.2 Try and use your CPAP every night, even if it is just for short periods of time until you are able to
use it for the entire night. Using it less makes it harder for your body to get used to it.
8.3 Try regulating and adjusting breathing in a relaxed state.
8.4 Use the "ramp" setting on your unit so the air pressure increases slowly to the required pressure
level.
8.5 Make small adjustments to your mask, tubing, straps and headgear until you get the right fit.
8.6 Nasal spray can be used to ease mild nasal congestion and keep your airway open. Consult your
physician.
8.7 Use a humidifier if you have a dry mouth, throat or nose.
8.8 Clean your mask, tubing and headgear once a week. Regularly check and replace the filters for
your CPAP unit.
8.9 Work closely with your referring physician and provide him/her with feedback on your response
to treatment.
8.10 CPAP involves a long-term commitment to improve your sleep and health. Continue to make a
daily commitment to use your CPAP every night.
