B. Put the transducer positioner on the horizontal stabilizer center section lug inspection surface at LBL
43.5. Refer to Figure 4, Flagnote 1.
NOTE: If the transducer positioner radius does not make good contact with the lug radius, put
sandpaper on the lug radius and lightly work the positioner back and forth until the proper
curvature is obtained.
C. Put the transducer positioner on the lug outboard half at the lower edge of the inspection surface with
the ultrasonic beam directed up. Refer to Figure 4, Flagnote 2.
D. Scan the transducer using approximately a 1.0-inch (2.5 cm) up and down movement. Index the
transducer approximately 0.20 inch (0.5 cm) in an inboard/outboard direction so that the entire lug half
width is inspected. Move the transducer positioner and continue the scan process until the entire
inspection surface of the outboard lug half is scanned. Refer to Figure 4.
E. Put the transducer positioner on the lug outboard half at the upper edge of the inspection surface with
the ultrasonic beam directed down. Refer to Figure 4, Flagnote 3.
F. Scan inspection surface according to Paragraph 5.D.
G. Repeat Paragraph 5.C. thru Paragraph 5.F. on the inboard lug half.
H. Repeat Paragraph 5.C. thru Paragraph 5.G. on the horizontal stabilizer center section lug halves at
RBL 43.5.
6. Inspection Results
A. Instrument responses in the inspection area equal to or greater than 40 percent of full screen height
and between 70 and 90 percent of full screen width are potential cracks and should be further
investigated.
NOTE: Compare with response from reference standard notch.
