Overview

This document provides comprehensive installation, operation, and maintenance instructions for Bosch Gas Water Heaters, specifically the GWH 10-2 G..., GWH 13-2 G..., and GWH 16-2 G... models. These continuous flow, internal gas water heaters are designed for wall-mounting and feature automatic electronic ignition for simplified operation.

Function Description

The Bosch Gas Water Heater is designed to provide hot water on demand. Its core function relies on a hydrodynamic generator (HDG) located in the water circuit between the water valve and the heat exchanger. When water flows past the HDG's turbine blades, it rotates, transmitting movement to an electric generator. This generator then powers the heater's ignition unit, supplying approximately 3.0 VAC.

To activate the heater, the user simply turns on the switch. Automatic ignition occurs whenever a hot water tap is opened. Initially, a temporary pilot burner is lit. Approximately four seconds later, the main burner ignites, and the pilot burner flame is extinguished. This design is a key energy-saving feature, as the pilot burner only operates for the minimum necessary time to ignite the main burner.

The heater incorporates several safety devices to ensure reliable and safe operation. An ionisation probe continuously checks for accidental extinction of the burner flame. A flue gas safety device monitors the condition of flue gas evacuation and, in case of inadequate evacuation, automatically turns off the heater to prevent combustion gases from entering the room. An overtemperature switch prevents overheating of the heat exchanger by turning off the heater if the water temperature at the outlet exceeds 85 °C. Additionally, a pressure relief valve releases pressure from the system if it exceeds 1500 kPa.

The appliance is equipped with a gas flow adjustment mechanism that is proportional to the water flow, helping to maintain a constant water temperature. This feature contributes to user comfort and energy efficiency.

Usage Features

The Bosch Gas Water Heater offers user-friendly features for controlling water temperature and flow. The heater is designed for convenience, ready to operate by simply pressing a switch.

A digital display provides essential information to the user, including the current water temperature or an error code if a malfunction occurs. It also indicates when the heater is in operation (burner turned on) and displays temperature measurement units.

Users can adjust the water temperature and flow using dedicated selectors. Turning the temperature/volume selector anti-clockwise increases water flow and decreases water temperature, while turning it clockwise decreases flow and increases water temperature. This allows for fine-tuning of the hot water output to suit individual preferences and reduce energy consumption by regulating the temperature to the minimum required value.

The gas adjustment feature allows users to influence the water temperature. Lowering the water temperature requires less gas, while a higher water temperature requires more gas. This provides an additional layer of control over energy usage.

The heater also includes a switch with an integrated LED that serves as a low water pressure indicator. If the red LED starts flashing during operation, it signals a need to check the water flow, indicating a potential issue with the water supply.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring the reliable and safe functioning of the Bosch Gas Water Heater, as well as for maintaining optimal gas consumption and environmental performance. Bosch recommends annual servicing by an authorised service agent.

The manual outlines specific procedures for commissioning and maintenance that must only be performed by a qualified technician. These include:

  • Inlet Pressure Adjustment: After installation, the inlet gas pressure should be adjusted at the appliance regulator to specific kPa values for Natural Gas or LP gas, while the unit is operating. A manometer is used to measure the pressure at the gas inlet pipe.
  • Burner Pressure Adjustment: The burner pressures are factory-adjusted but may require adjustment upon installation. This involves connecting a manometer to the burner pressure test point, opening hot water taps, and regulating the gas pressure using an adjusting screw until specified values are achieved. The minimum gas flow adjustment is performed automatically after the maximum gas flow adjustment.
  • Conversion to a Different Type of Gas: If the heater needs to be converted to operate with a different type of gas, only original conversion parts must be used, and the conversion must be performed by a qualified technician following specific assembly instructions.
  • Flue Gas Safety Device Check: To ensure the correct operation of the flue gas safety device, a qualified installer/service agent must perform a specific check. This involves temporarily replacing the combustion gases flue pipe with a blocked pipe and observing if the heater turns off within a specified time frame. If the probe malfunctions, the faulty part must be replaced by a qualified technician.
  • Draining the Appliance: In areas with a risk of freezing, the appliance can be drained. This involves turning off the inlet water valve and gas supply, opening a hot water tap to relieve pressure, and then either draining through the water valve by removing the filter screw cap or through the cold water inlet pipe by removing the pressure relief screw.

The manual explicitly states that maintenance information is contained in a service manual available to licensed technicians upon request from Bosch, emphasizing that only qualified personnel should perform these tasks. Failure to perform maintenance procedures can lead to appliance malfunction, errors, service calls, and loss of warranty. The user is also warned never to touch, turn off, modify, or replace the flue gas safety device.
