Overview

This document serves as an instruction manual for the Bosch PSR 12-2 and PSR 14.4-2 cordless screwdrivers, providing essential safety warnings, operational guidelines, and maintenance information.

Function Description

The Bosch PSR 12-2 and PSR 14.4-2 are cordless screwdrivers designed for driving in and loosening screws, as well as for drilling in wood, metal, ceramic, and plastic. These power tools are equipped with a keyless chuck for easy tool changes and a torque preselection ring that allows users to set the desired torque in 25 steps. This feature ensures that the insert tool stops once the screw is flush with the material or the set torque is reached, preventing overtightening or damage to the workpiece. The tools also feature a gear selector with two speed ranges: Gear I for low-speed applications like screwdriving or working with large drilling diameters, and Gear II for high-speed tasks such as working with small drilling diameters. A rotational direction switch allows for easy reversal of the tool's rotation, enabling both right rotation for drilling and driving screws, and left rotation for loosening or unscrewing screws. The On/Off switch provides variable speed control, with lighter pressure resulting in lower rotational speed and increased pressure leading to higher speeds. A run-on brake feature ensures that the chuck stops quickly when the On/Off switch is released, preventing the tool from running on unintentionally.

Usage Features

Before starting any operation, it is crucial to read all safety warnings and instructions to prevent electric shock, fire, or serious injury. The work area should be kept clean and well-lit, and the power tool should not be operated in explosive atmospheres or near flammable materials. Children and bystanders must be kept away during operation to avoid distractions. Personal safety is paramount; users should remain alert, wear eye protection, and use other protective equipment like dust masks, non-skid safety shoes, hard hats, or hearing protection as appropriate. Unintentional starting is prevented by ensuring the switch is in the off-position before connecting the battery or handling the tool. Any adjusting key or wrench must be removed before turning on the power tool. Users should maintain proper footing and balance and avoid overreaching. Loose clothing, jewelry, hair, and gloves should be kept away from moving parts. If dust extraction and collection facilities are provided, they must be connected and used properly to reduce dust-related hazards.

When changing tools, the rotational direction switch should be set to the center position to prevent accidental activation. The keyless chuck allows for quick insertion and removal of tools by holding the rear sleeve and turning the front sleeve. For removing the drill chuck, a securing screw with a left-hand thread must first be unscrewed. An Allen key can then be used to loosen and remove the chuck. When mounting the drill chuck, the process is reversed, and the securing screw must be tightened to approximately 35-40 Nm.

For optimal performance, only original Bosch O-pack batteries with the specified voltage should be used. The charged battery is inserted into the handle until it engages flush. The rotational direction switch should be set to the center position to avoid unintentional starting. The torque preselection ring allows users to select the appropriate torque for their task, with higher settings for driving out screws or for drilling. The gear selector should only be actuated when the machine is at a standstill. For drilling in metal, perfectly sharpened HSS drill bits are recommended. When driving larger or longer screws into hard materials, predrilling a pilot hole with approximately 2/3 of the screw length is advisable. After extended periods of low-speed operation, the machine should be allowed to cool down by running it at maximum speed with no load for about 3 minutes.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance and cleaning are essential for the safe and proper functioning of the power tool. Before any maintenance work, tool changes, transport, or storage, the rotational direction switch must be set to the center position to prevent accidental activation. The machine and its ventilation slots should always be kept clean. If the machine malfunctions despite proper care, it should be repaired by an authorized Bosch after-sales service center. When ordering spare parts or communicating with service centers, the 10-digit article number found on the machine's type plate should always be included.

Batteries require specific care. New batteries or those unused for a long time will not reach full capacity until after approximately 5 charging/discharging cycles. To remove the battery, the unlocking buttons should be pressed, and the battery pulled downwards without exerting force. The battery is equipped with an NTC temperature control system, allowing charging only within a temperature range of 0 °C to 45 °C, which helps prolong battery service life. A significantly reduced working period after charging indicates that the battery is worn out and needs to be replaced. Batteries should be protected from heat, continuous sun irradiation, and fire to prevent the danger of explosion. They should not be opened to avoid short-circuiting. When not in use, battery packs should be kept away from other metal objects like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, or screws, which could short-circuit the terminals and cause burns or fire. In case of accidental contact with liquid ejected from the battery, flush with water and seek medical help if it contacts the eyes.

For disposal, the machine, accessories, and packaging should be sorted for environmental-friendly recycling. For EC countries, power tools that are no longer usable must be collected separately and disposed of in an environmentally correct manner, in accordance with the European Guideline 2002/96/EC for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. Battery packs/batteries, especially those containing nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd) or nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH), must not be disposed of in household waste, fire, or water. They should be collected, recycled, or disposed of in an environmental-friendly manner, following guideline 91/157/EEC for defective or dead battery packs/batteries.
