Overview

The document describes the Electronic joysticks and control grips 4THE5, EC from Bosch Rexroth AG. This instruction manual (RE 29696-01-B/2021-06-15) provides essential information for the safe and proper transport, installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, disassembly, and basic troubleshooting of the product.

Function Description

The 4THE5 joystick is designed as a component for application in mobile working machines. Its primary function is to detect actuations from the driver, supporting both proportional and On/Off actuations. It is intended to be connected to a machine controller (ECU) which handles power control and system logic. The modular design of the 4THE5 joystick allows for various control configurations, facilitating an efficient and user-friendly interface with the machine.

The product is available in several output variants, ensuring compatibility with Bosch Rexroth controllers:

  • 4THEC5: A CAN joystick suitable for safety-related parts of control systems up to PLc, with Vbat supply.
  • 4THED5: A CAN joystick for safety-related parts of control systems up to PLd, with Vbat supply.
  • 4THES5: An Analog Ratiometric 5 V joystick, PLd capable.
  • 4THESW5: An Analog PWM 5 V joystick, PLd capable.

The joystick base, complete control grip, and large bellow are available as spare parts. The joystick base itself cannot be repaired but must be replaced if faulty. Control grip components such as push-buttons, rockers, or rollers are not serviceable for safety reasons.

Important Technical Specifications

The permissible technical data for the joystick can be found in data sheets 29696 or 29697. Key operating parameters include voltage, temperature, vibration, shock, and other environmental influences, which must be strictly observed to prevent damage or danger. The product is designed for professional use within specified operating ranges.

Electrical Connection: The joystick features a DEUTSCH DT04-06P-CE03 connector. The pin assignment varies depending on the version (CAN, PWM, Analog):

Pin CAN version PWM version Analog version
1 VBat 5 V regulated 5 V regulated
2 GND GND GND
3 CAN_IN High Axis 1 Principal Axis 1 Principal
4 CAN_IN Low Axis 1 Redundant Axis 1 Redundant
5 CAN_OUT High Axis 2 Principal Axis 2 Principal
6 CAN_OUT Low Axis 2 Redundant Axis 2 Redundant

The joystick is ready for operation within 1500 ms for CAN versions and 5 ms for Analog and PWM versions after the voltage supply is applied.

Usage Features

Intended Use: The joystick is intended for integration into mobile working machines to detect driver actuations. It must only be commissioned after being installed in the target machine/system and after the safety of the entire system has been established in accordance with the Machinery Directive.

Installation:

  • Preparation: Verify the material number on the packaging or product against the order confirmation.
  • Mounting: Insert the joystick carefully into the console/armrest, ensuring no damage to wiring or the protection boot. Fasten it using the specified mounting bolt with a maximum tightening torque of 10 Nm. Position the boot correctly under the fixation plate for optimal protection (note: the boot does not provide panel IP relevance).
  • Electrical Connection: Connect the product with caution, observing the pin-out specified in the installation drawing. Ensure the DEUTSCH mating connector is de-energized before connection and engages noticeably.
  • Wiring and Circuitry: Lines from the joystick to the electronics must not be routed near power-conducting lines. The wiring harness should be mechanically secured, preferably within the machine interior. Lines must not be kinked, twisted, rub against edges, or be routed through sharp-edged ducts without protection. Cables/wires must have individual seals to prevent water ingress into the connector.

Commissioning: Before commissioning, ensure the machine and hydraulic system are in a safe condition. Check the correct functioning of the joystick (e.g., direction of movement, messages, output levels).

Operation: The product is a component that requires no settings or changes during operation. It must be used only within the performance range specified in its technical data.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning and Care:

  • Regular cleaning is important. Use only water and, if necessary, a mild plastic cleaning agent.
  • Never use solvents or aggressive cleaning agents.
  • Do not direct high-pressure cleaners directly at sensitive components such as the joystick base, rubber parts (bellows), electrical connections (solenoids, sensors), and actuation elements, as this can cause damage.
  • Ensure all seals and fittings on plug-in connections are securely seated to prevent moisture ingress during cleaning.
  • Use fibre-free cleaning cloths for cleaning.
  • Plug all openings with appropriate protective equipment to prevent cleaning agents from entering the joystick.

Inspection and Maintenance: No special inspection or maintenance activities are necessary for the joystick itself.

Repair: The joystick base, complete control grip, and large bellow are available as spare parts. The joystick base cannot be repaired and must be replaced if defective. Only original Rexroth spare parts should be used to ensure functional reliability and maintain warranty validity. Modifications or repairs to the joystick or its wiring are prohibited and can lead to dangerous malfunctions.

Troubleshooting: A malfunction table is provided to support troubleshooting common issues such as the joystick not supplying a signal or supplying an incorrect signal. For electronic CAN joysticks, error codes are emitted, and their descriptions are available upon request. Common remedies include checking wiring, inspecting for damage, measuring supply voltage, and ensuring proper grounding.

Transport and Storage:

  • Inspect the joystick for transport damage upon receipt. If dropped, it should not be used, as invisible damage could affect reliability.
  • Storage Requirements: Store for up to 2 years at an average relative humidity of 60% and a temperature between -20 °C and +40 °C. Short-term storage (up to 100 hours) at -40 °C and +85 °C is permissible.

Disposal: The product and its packaging material must be disposed of in accordance with national regulations to prevent environmental pollution.

Extension and Conversion: The joystick must not be converted. Any conversion, extension, or software modification by the customer will void the warranty.
