  If your BRADEN Chain Hoists hoist will not lower the load smoothly, start by inspecting the counterbalance cartridge. Remove it from the valve block, then clean and reseal it if needed. Also, check the brake cylinder seal by disconnecting the brake release tube and connecting a hand pump with a gauge to the brake release port. Apply 1000 psi, close the shut-off valve, and let it stand for five minutes. If there's any pressure loss, disassemble the brake cylinder to inspect the sealing surfaces and replace the seals. Finally, disassemble the brake to inspect the brake discs.

  If your BRADEN Chain Hoists brake won't hold a load in neutral, it could be due to excessive system back pressure affecting the brake release port. Inspect the hydraulic circuit for any restrictions, such as plugged filters, or control valves that aren't centering properly. Alternatively, the friction brake might not hold because of worn or damaged brake discs. In this case, you should disassemble the brake to inspect the brake discs.

  If your BRADEN Chain Hoists hoist isn't hoisting the rated load, first ensure it's mounted on a level and rigid surface to prevent distortion of the hoist base and binding of the gear train; reinforce the mounting surface if needed. Next, check the system relief valve setting by installing an accurate 0-5000 psi (34,500 kPa) gauge into the inlet port of the brake valve. Apply a stall pull load while monitoring the pressure and compare the reading to the hoist specifications. Adjust the relief valve as required if it's set too low.

  If your BRADEN Chain Hoists “chatters” or surges while raising a load, it might be related to issues such as hydraulic oil flow to the motor being too low, or the controls being operated too quickly. Operator training may be required. You may want to check for hydraulic system back pressure exceeding 100 psi (690 kPa) and inspect for restrictions in the return line to the reservoir. You may also want to consider oil analysis to check for contamination, which can wear the motor shaft and seal. If contamination is present, thoroughly flush the entire hydraulic system, install new filters and oil, and replace the motor seal.

Why is oil leaking from the vent plug of my BRADEN BG4B?

  If your BRADEN Chain Hoists has oil leaking from the vent plug, hydraulic system back pressure must not exceed 100 psi (690 kPa). Inspect the hydraulic system for a restriction in the return line to the reservoir. Oil analysis may indicate contamination has worn motor shaft and seal. Thoroughly flush entire hydraulic system and install new filters and oil. Install new motor seal.

How to fix wire rope not spooling smoothly on BRADEN BG4B Chain Hoists?

  If the wire rope on your BRADEN Chain Hoists isn't spooling smoothly on the drum, first check the mounting distance and fleet angle; reposition the hoist as needed to achieve a ½ to 1½ degree fleet angle, as the hoist may be mounted too close to the main sheave. Also, ensure you are using the correct lay rope by consulting a wire rope manufacturer for a recommendation that suits your application. Finally, if the hoist has been overloaded, causing permanent set in the wire rope, replace the wire rope and conduct operator/rigger training.
