Why is my Breville BES840XL leaking water?
    • M
      Michael MooreAug 14, 2025
If your Breville Coffee Maker is leaking water, ensure the drip tray is firmly pushed in place after using the steam and hot water functions. The water is automatically released into the drip tray after the steam and hot water functions to ensure the thermocoil is at the optimal temperature for extracting espresso. Also, check that the water tank is fully inserted and locked into position.

Why is there no steam coming from my Breville BES840XL Coffee Maker?
    • D
      Debra PattersonAug 18, 2025
If your Breville Coffee Maker is not producing steam, allow time for the machine to reach operating temperature. The STEAM/HOT WATER light will flash to indicate the machine is heating to create steam. During this time, condensed water may purge from the steam wand; this is normal. When the STEAM/ HOT WATER light stops flashing, the steam wand is ready for use. Also, check that the water tank is not empty and that it is fully inserted and locked into position. Ensure the STEAM/ HOT WATER dial is completely rotated to the STEAM position.

      murphymatthewAug 21, 2025
If your coffee is not hot enough when using your Breville Coffee Maker, rinse the cups under the hot water outlet and place them on the cup warming tray to pre-heat them. Also, rinse the portafilter under the hot water outlet and dry it thoroughly to pre-heat it. If making a cappuccino or latte, heat the milk until the base of the jug becomes hot to touch.

Why does espresso run out around the edge of the portafilter on my Breville BES840XL?
    • A
      Angela EvansAug 25, 2025
If espresso is running out around the edge of the portafilter on your Breville Coffee Maker, make sure the portafilter is completely inserted and rotated until resistance is felt. Also, clean any excess coffee from the rim of the filter basket to ensure a proper seal in the group head. If there is too much coffee in the filter basket, lower the dose of coffee, ensuring the top edge of the metal cap on the tamper is level with the top of the filter basket after tamping with 30-40lbs (15-20kg) of pressure.

The POWER button light will stop flashing, and all button lights on the control panel will illuminate when ready. Also, check if the water tank is empty and fill it if needed. Why is my Breville BES840XL Coffee Maker making a pulsing/pumping sound?
    • K
      Katrina SalasAug 31, 2025
If your Breville Coffee Maker is making a pulsing or pumping sound while extracting espresso or steaming milk, it could be the normal operation of the 15 bar Italian pump. Also, check that the water tank is not empty and fill it if necessary. Ensure the water tank is fully inserted and locked into position.

What to do if espresso only drips from the portafilter of my Breville BES840XL?
    • L
      Laura JohnsonSep 3, 2025
If your Breville Coffee Maker is producing espresso that only drips from the portafilter spouts, the coffee may be ground too finely. Try using a slightly coarser grind. Also, there might be too much coffee in the filter basket; lower the dose of coffee. Ensure the top edge of the metal cap on the tamper is level with the top of the filter basket after tamping with 30-40lbs (15-20kg) of pressure. Finally, make sure the water tank is not empty, and that the water tank is fully inserted and locked into position.

Why does espresso run out too quickly from my Breville BES840XL Coffee Maker?
    • S
      Susan GonzalezSep 7, 2025
If the espresso runs out too quickly from your Breville Coffee Maker, it may be because the coffee is ground too coarsely. Try using a slightly finer grind. Also, there might not be enough coffee in the filter basket; increase the dose of coffee, ensuring the top edge of the metal cap on the tamper is level with the top of the filter basket after tamping with 30-40lbs (15-20kg) of pressure. The coffee might also be tamped too lightly, so tamp between 30-40lbs or 15-20kg of pressure.

Why is there no crema from my Breville BES840XL?
    • T
      Timothy MooreSep 10, 2025
If your Breville Coffee Maker is not producing enough crema, it could be because the coffee is tamped too lightly. Tamp between 30-40lbs or 15-20kg of pressure. The coffee may also be ground too coarsely, so use a slightly finer grind. Stale coffee beans or pre-ground coffee can also be the cause. If grinding fresh whole coffee beans, buy freshly roasted coffee with a “roasted on” date and use within 2 weeks of this date. If using pre-ground coffee, use within a week of grinding. Finally, ensure you use Dual Wall filter baskets with pre-ground coffee.
