Oil & Fuel Recommendations

Oil

Check and add oil using high-quality detergent oil as per chart. Do not over-fill.

Fuel

Use clean, fresh, regular unleaded gasoline (77 octane min). Do not mix oil with gasoline.

Starting & Stopping

Engine Warm-up

Engine operates best at full throttle (FAST) and requires a warm-up period.

Start Engine

Keep clear of moving parts. Pull rewind starter cord slowly then rapidly to start.

Rewind Starter

Grasp rope handle, pull slowly to resistance, then rapidly to start engine.

Electric Starter

Turn key to START, operate in FAST. Charge battery if supplied before starting.

Control Handles

Operate safety brake, traction, or steering handles per equipment manufacturer recommendations.

Before Starting Engine

Open fuel shut-off valve 1/4 turn if equipped before starting.

Primer Equipped Engine

Move throttle to FAST. Push primer bulb 3 times before starting the engine.

Choke Equipped Engine

Move throttle to FAST. Push choke to full CHOKE, then gradually move as engine starts.

Stop Engine

Move throttle to SLOW, release brake or move throttle/key to STOP/OFF.

Adjustments

Control Adjustments

Prevent accidental starting by removing spark plug wire/disconnecting battery.

Throttle Control Adjustment

Loosen clamp, move control lever, wire, casing, set throttle to FAST, tighten.

Stop Switch Check

Move throttle to STOP. Ensure governor lever contacts stop switch; check operation.

Fixed Throttle Control

Governor control lever is bent to position shown and is not adjustable.

Carburetor Adjustments

Manufacturer specifies top speed. Do not exceed. Carburetor is not adjustable.

Maintenance

Keep Engine and Parts Clean

Clean engine and parts with brush/cloth. Avoid forceful water spray.

Top Oil Drain

Drain warm oil from top of engine; air cleaner side up. Refill with new oil.

Bottom Oil Drain

Remove drain plug, drain oil, replace. Refill with new oil and check level.

Dual Element Air Cleaner

Service pre-cleaner/cartridge. Do not oil. Replace if dirty or damaged.

Square Dual Element Air Cleaner

Loosen screw, tilt cover, remove/service pre-cleaner/cartridge, reassemble.

Oval Dual Element Air Cleaner

Loosen screws, lift cover, remove/service pre-cleaner/cartridge, install cover.

Maintenance Procedures

Air Cooling System

Clean internal cooling fins and surfaces to prevent overheating. Contact dealer for service.

Finger Guard

Keep governor linkage, springs, and controls free of debris for smooth operation.

Spark Plug

Clean by scraping or wire brushing. Use Briggs & Stratton Spark Tester to check for spark.

Muffler Area

Clean muffler area daily to remove grass and combustible debris.

Remove Combustion Deposits

Scrape deposits from cylinder, head, piston and valves every 100-300 hours.

Follow hourly or calendar intervals. More frequent service is needed in adverse conditions.
