Overview

This document describes the Broan 63000EX Series Range Hood, a kitchen ventilation device designed to remove cooking impurities, smoke, and odors from the air. The manual provides comprehensive instructions for installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, ensuring proper and efficient use of the appliance.

Function Description

The Broan 63000EX Series Range Hood is primarily designed for general ventilating use in domestic kitchens. Its main function is to exhaust air to the outside, preventing the accumulation of grease, smoke, and odors that result from cooking. The hood can be equipped with either an exterior or an in-line blower, which are sold separately and must be UL listed for Canadian and U.S. use. The blower system includes a motor that can be controlled to adjust the fan speed, and a Heat Sentry™ thermostat that automatically activates or increases blower speed when excessive heat is detected above the cooking surface. The hood also features halogen lighting to illuminate the cooking surface.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Blower Compatibility: The 63000EX series hood must be installed with specific Broan Exterior blower models (331H, 332H, 335, 336) or Broan In-Line Blower models (HLB3, HLB6, HLB9, HLB11). Other blower models are not compatible.
  • Electrical Requirements: The blower must be rated for 120V, 60 Hz, and 6.0 A max. All electrical wiring must comply with applicable codes and standards and be performed by a qualified person. The hood requires a 120 VAC electrical power cable input.
  • Ductwork: Only metal ductwork should be used to reduce the risk of fire. An 8" round to 10" round transition (Model 414) is required for optimal air performance, and should be installed as close to the range hood as possible. Straight, short duct runs are recommended for maximum efficiency.
  • Mounting Height: For best capture of cooking impurities, the bottom of the hood should be positioned a minimum of 24" and a maximum of 30" above the cooking surface. The overall hood height is 10-1/4" (26 cm).
  • Lighting: The hood requires four (4) halogen bulbs of Type T3, 12Volt, 20Watt Max, G-4 Base.
  • Safety Features: The hood motor is equipped with a thermal overload protection that automatically shuts off if it overheats and restarts when it cools down. The Heat Sentry™ thermostat is a crucial safety feature that activates the blower in response to high temperatures, even if the hood is manually turned off.

Usage Features

  • Controls: The hood is operated via slide controls located under its front edge. These include a light switch for the halogen lights, a blower on/off switch, and a blower speed control.
  • Blower Speed Control: The blower speed control allows for infinitely adjustable fan speed, from low to high, to suit various cooking needs.
  • Pilot Lamp: A pilot lamp illuminates whenever the blower is in operation, providing a visual indicator of its status.
  • Heat Sentry™ Thermostat: This intelligent feature automatically turns on the blower to HIGH speed, or increases its speed if already on, when excessive heat is detected. This helps to quickly remove smoke and heat from the cooking area, enhancing safety and comfort. It's important to note that the Heat Sentry™ can activate the blower even if the hood is turned off, and in such cases, the blower can only be stopped from the main electrical panel.
  • Installation: The manual emphasizes the importance of proper installation, including securing the support frame to ceiling joists and cross framing, connecting decorative flues, and installing the duct collar. Two installers are recommended due to the hood's size and weight.

Maintenance Features

  • Grease Filters: The grease filters are designed to be easily removed and cleaned frequently. They are dishwasher safe, and a warm detergent solution is recommended for manual cleaning. To remove, push the stop inwards at the handle and pull the filters downwards.
  • Hood Cleaning (Stainless Steel): Stainless steel surfaces are relatively easy to clean. Regular cleaning with hot water and soap or detergent, followed by rinsing with clear water and wiping dry with a soft cloth, is usually sufficient. For persistent discolorations or deposits, a non-scratching household cleanser or stainless steel polishing powder with a little water and a soft cloth can be used. Stubborn cases may require a plastic scouring pad or soft bristle brush, rubbing lightly in the direction of the stainless finish.
  • Cleaning Precautions:
    • Avoid allowing deposits to remain on the surface for long periods.
    • Do not use ordinary steel wool or steel brushes, as small bits of steel can adhere and cause rust.
    • Do not allow salt solutions, disinfectants, bleaches, or cleaning compounds to remain in contact with stainless steel for extended periods, as their chemicals can be harmful. Rinse thoroughly with water after exposure and wipe dry.
  • Hood Cleaning (Painted Surfaces): Painted surfaces should be cleaned with warm water and mild detergent only.
  • Bulb Replacement: Halogen bulbs can be replaced by loosening the ring nut counterclockwise and pulling the bulb sideward (do not rotate). It's crucial to switch off the electricity supply before performing any maintenance, and to avoid touching replacement bulbs with bare hands.
  • Fuse Replacement: The manual provides instructions for replacing the fuse (5x20mm, 5A, 125V) by removing the grease filters, electrical box plate, and opening the electrical box.
