Overview

The Broan B70DHV is a ventilating dehumidifier designed for whole-house integration with existing heating and cooling systems. Its primary function is to enhance comfort, health, and property protection through dehumidification, optional fresh air ventilation, and air filtration.

Function Description:

The B70DHV operates by drawing in return air, dehumidifying it, and then supplying the conditioned air back into the HVAC system. It can also introduce fresh outdoor air into the structure when the optional fresh air ventilation duct is utilized. This allows for year-round drying capabilities, even in cold climates or when dew points are low, by using ventilation to dehumidify the structure. The unit is designed to be installed indoors in a space protected from rain and flooding.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Requirements: The B70DHV plugs into a common grounded 115VAC outlet. It draws 5.1 Amps at 80°F and 60% RH. A minimum 15 Amp circuit capacity is required. For installations near water sources, a GFCI protected circuit is recommended.
  • Control Voltage: The remote controls operate on a low voltage circuit (24VAC) and require 18-22 gauge thermostat wire for connection.
  • Air Filter: The unit is equipped with a MERV-13 air filter with dimensions of 0.75" x 9.00" x 11.38".
  • Duct Connections:
    • Return Air Inlet: 8" diameter duct collar.
    • Supply Air Outlet: 8" diameter duct collar, configurable for horizontal or vertical flow.
    • Fresh Air Ventilation (Optional): 6" diameter duct, capable of providing up to 55 CFM of outside air.
  • Drainage: The unit generates condensate and requires a drain trap for proper operation. A 3/4" threaded male NPT adapter is used for the drain pan, with 3/4" PVC pipe recommended for transport. A pitch of 1" per 10' is required for the drain. An optional condensate pump kit is available for installations requiring lift.
  • Static Pressure: The unit should not be connected with a static pressure greater than or equal to +0.5 WG.
  • Dimensions: The unit requires sufficient clearance for overall dimensions, ductwork, filter removal, and electrical service access. A minimum clearance of 6" for proper air flow and 13" for filter removal (either side) is specified.

Usage Features:

  • Dehumidification: The core function of the B70DHV is to remove excess moisture from the air, improving indoor comfort and preventing issues related to high humidity.
  • Fresh Air Ventilation (Optional): The unit can be configured to introduce fresh outdoor air, with a ventilation control needed to program the time and frequency of outside air introduction based on residence size and occupancy. A 6" motorized damper is required for digital control of fresh air.
  • Air Filtration: The integrated MERV-13 filter helps improve indoor air quality by capturing airborne particles.
  • Control Options: The B70DHV can be controlled by a built-in dehumidistat or a remote-mounted control, such as the Broan DEH 3000 (sold separately). Remote controls are recommended if the dehumidifier is located outside the desired humidity control area.
  • Ducting Flexibility: The supply air outlet can be rotated for either horizontal or vertical flow, offering flexibility in installation.
  • Suspension: The unit can be suspended using a hang kit or suitable alternatives from structural members, ensuring the base is fully supported.

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter Replacement: The MERV-13 air filter should be checked and replaced every three to six months to maintain capacity and efficiency. Operating the unit with a dirty filter or without the recommended filter will void the product warranty. Filter replacement involves removing a snap-button door, pulling out the old filter, and inserting a new one with the AIR FLOW arrow pointing into the unit.
  • Electrical Service Access: The outside shell of the unit needs to be removed to access electrical service components.
  • Circuit Breaker: The B70DHV includes a resettable circuit breaker to protect the 24-volt control transformer from damage due to electrical shorts. The reset button is located on the back of the unit.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for common issues related to fan and compressor operation, dehumidification capacity, and ventilation, with procedures for diagnosing control-related and performance-related problems.
  • Qualified Service: Installation, service, and maintenance must be performed by a qualified service technician. This is particularly critical for tasks involving the high-pressure refrigerant system and high-voltage circuitry, which present serious hazards.
  • Refrigerant Charging: If the refrigerant charge is lost, the leak must be repaired, and a new charge accurately weighed in. Any old charge must be recovered before recharging. The unit nameplate provides the correct charge weight and refrigerant type.
